Sipsey Wilderness!! Backpacking plus the Biggest tree in Alabama!!
A nice 3 day backpacking trip to the Sipsey Wilderness. We managed to fit a lot of exploring in including a cave, civil war era graveyard, the biggest tree in Alabama and an old moonshiner car!
***** APPARENTLY WE BROKE SOME RULES*****
I was contacted by a ranger and he sent me these rules.....
1. Thank you for your mention of the restriction on disturbing arrowheads and other cultural artifacts from anywhere on public or tribal land. That restriction is governed by the Archaeological Resources Protection Act and is a serious crime (up to $10,000 and one year of prison for first offense).
2. Alcohol is prohibited in both Winston and Lawrence Counties (dry counties). The Forest Service restricts alcohol within recreation areas (which does not include the Sipsey), but open consumption is a county offense.
3. Cave exploration is expressly forbidden by Forest closure order anywhere within the Bankhead National Forest (see attached and at This order is not as well known or understood, but is necessary to prevent the further degradation of threatened and endangered bats in the area. From what I saw it appears you and your colleagues were respectful of the resource, so I’m hoping you simply didn’t know about this closure order. Please keep in mind, though, that this order is enforceable by fines. My primary concern is to educate and reduce the impact to the bats.

Backpacking Fun in Alabama's Sipsey Wilderness: Hiking to the Big Tree
In November, 2016, I ventured into the woods to see Alabama's tallest tree. It's located in the Sipsey Wilderness, part of the Bankhead National Forest. My backpacking loop took me 21 miles over two days. I saw Alabama's Big Tree on the morning of the second day.
Thanks to Jaxx Drinkwater for giving me the idea to backpack in the Sipsey Wilderness, which is only two and a half hours from where I live in Nashville. The first part of Jaxx's video about his backpacking trip to the Sipsey Wilderness is here:
The loop I followed is based on a trip of hiker Mark Oleg's that he described in a blog post. His full description of the loop is here:

Sipsey Wilderness Hiking - Suicide Awareness
Join me on My Sipsey Wilderness Hiking Trip. As we Hike for our Veterans.
In 2013, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs released a study that covered suicides from 1999 to 2010, which showed that roughly 22 veterans were dying by suicide per day, or one every 65 minutes. I know that this study has been argued in the past but the real facts are this : Not one of our veterans should be committing suicide. These men and women are heroes! Thank a veteran when you see them. They deserve our loyalty and respect.

Sipsey Wilderness, Bankhead National Forest, Big Tree and East Bee Branch Falls
Big Tree is the largest known yellow poplar tree in the state of Alabama, it is roughly 150ft tall and 25ft around.
The Big Tree Located in The Sipsey Wilderness Area of Bankhead National Forest
The Big Tree as everyone refers to it, is located in the Sipsey Wilderness Area of the Bankhead National Forest in North Alabama. It is the largest Poplar tree in Alabama and among the largest in the Southeastern United States. There are two beautiful waterfalls that empty near the tree into the canyon and East Bee Branch when you arrive. The scenery rewards you for your long hike in to see this massive tree. It takes almost a full day of daylight to hike in during the winter months and hike out.

Winston County, Alabama
Located in the northwest part of Alabama, Winston County
is a mountainous county that supported Unionism during
the Civil War and attempted to declare itself the Free State of
Winston.
There are a number of recreational opportunities for visitors
to Winston County. The William B. Bankhead National
Forest offers a range of outdoor activities in which to take
part. Visitors can hike, fish, boat, or camp in the forest as well
as picnic in any one of four recreational areas. Within the
boundaries of the forest lies the Sipsey Wilderness, Alabama’s
first national wilderness area. Known as “The Land of a
Thousand Waterfalls,” the 25,000-acre wilderness park affords
visitors opportunities to hike, horseback ride, boat, fish,
swim, and canoe.

Exploring Bankhead National Forest: Sipsey River Recreation Area
The third and last of the recreation areas in Bankhead north of Highway 278 is technically called the Sipsey Picnic Area, but most folks I've known called it the Sipsey Rec Area, so that's what I'm going with. At any rate, this spot is the gateway to the wilderness. Trail 200, the Borden Creek trail is accessible from here, which Trail 209 ties into. The Sipsey Recreation Area has a trail of it's own though, and multiple waterfalls to boot. An old CCC pavilion is situated just upstream from the second larger falls, and numerous wildflowers line the path below the tall bluffs and picnic tables. In addition, there's a put-in for kayaks and canoes, where you can explore a popular and gorgeous stretch of the Sipsey Fork down to the Mims takeout on Highway 33.
