Observation at Sir James Mitchell Park - Curtin University
Sir James Mitchell Park is a park located at the southern foreshore of Perth water, in Perth, Western Australia. It lies within the suburb of South Perth from Mends St Jetty to just south of Harrison Island. The weather around Perth is mid wet during the winters and hot dry during summer. This Area has aesthetic, historic, social-cultural heritage, as it was formerly used for the purpose of dairy farming, market gardening and flour milling activities. It also provides adequate infrastructure as you can see there are playgrounds, electric BBQ and picnic table with shelters and solar power light installed. Also, there are public toilets just near to the jetty and drinking supplies as well as the city’s maintenance shed with the house of equipment for maintaining the reserve.
Formerly, this land has experienced numbers of issues regarding management especially during the 1950s which cause the close down of market garden. The water quality here from the initial observation is clean and well maintained as the presence of aquatic fauna can be observed. It should be low in nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus after the management strategy during 2014. Nowadays, this river has been used for several recreational activities in terms of primary and secondary water contact. These activities include swimming, finishing, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and boat are provided at the Wesley College rowing club.
Flora and fauna can be observed, such as frogs, lizards, birds and particularly iconic black swan of Perth. The trees and vegetation are well reserves as they are all recorded in City’s Tree Register electronic database as part of its asset management. The Melaleuca grove and Fiscus Rubignosa are the iconic foreshore trees in Sir James Mitchell Park.
Anything that might affect the water quality could be the events and activities that usually happened in this area. This park is often used as a location for events such as the Australian Day Celebration Zone, particularly the sky show, city fiesta, concert, smaller event such as wedding and functions. There are also other activities that might cause low impact to water quality such as walking, jogging, cycling, playing, watching, exploring natural features, dog walking and exercising, bird watching, picnicking and social gathering.
This site has been maintained by Swan River trust and Department of transport and they aim to maximised community benefits and balance ecological needs to provide a safe, equitable, sustainable use of water.
