Sir Syed House ???? | Aligarh Muslim University | 2017
Yesterday when I visited Sir Syed House Aligarh Muslim University. I was amazed to see there may spring up a mighty tree whose branches, like those of the Banyan of the soil, shall in their turn strike firm roots into the earth and themselves send forth new and vigorous sapling; that this College may expand into a University whose sons shall go forth throughout the length and breadth of the land to preach the gospel of free inquiry, of large-hearted tolerance and of pure morality.
The House, which was occupied by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan( originally a military mess) for more than two decades, is now the location of Sir Syed Academy. It was purchased by Syed Mahmud in 1876 for the residence of his father. As a tribute to the founder, the house was renovated and converted into a Sir Syed memorial in the early seventies.
The Sir Syed Academy was formally inaugurated on 22nd October, 1974. Since its inception the Academy is instrumental in generating an awareness and understanding among its visitors and Aligarh fraternity about the tremendous contribution, which Sir Syed Ahmad khan has made in the educational, technological, social and cultural development.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan CSI (Urdu: سر سید احمد خان; 17 October 1817 – 27 March 1898), commonly known as Sir Syed, was an Indian Muslim pragmatist,[1] Islamic modernist,[2][3] philosopher and social activist of nineteenth century India. He worked for the British East India Company and was one of the founders of the Aligarh Muslim University. In 1842, Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar–II conferred upon Sir Syed the title of Javad-ud Daulah, maintaining the title originally conferred upon Sir Syed's grandfather Syed Hadi by Emperor Shah Alam II around the middle of the 18th century.
In addition, the Emperor added the title of Arif Jang. The conferment of these titles was symbolic of Sir Syed's incorporation into the nobility of Delhi.[4]
Born into nobility, Sir Syed earned a reputation as a distinguished scholar while working as a jurist for the British East India Company's rule in India. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he remained loyal to the British Empire and was noted for his actions in saving European lives.[5] After the rebellion, he penned the booklet The Causes of the Indian Mutiny – a daring critique, at the time, of British policies that he blamed for causing the revolt. Believing that the future of Muslims was threatened by the rigidity of their orthodox outlook, Sir Syed began promoting Western–style scientific education by founding modern schools and journals and organising Muslim entrepreneurs. Towards this goal, Sir Syed founded Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875 with the aim of promoting social, scientific, and economic development of Indian Muslims which later developed into the famous Aligarh Muslim University.
Influential Hindu and Muslim politicians of his time viewed Sir Syed with great suspicion, since he called upon Muslims to loyally serve the British Empire. He denounced nationalist organisations such as the Indian Congress for giving only token representation to the Indian Muslim community. Sir Syed promoted the adoption of Urdu as the lingua franca of all Indian Muslims, and mentored a rising generation of Muslim politicians and entrepreneurs. Prior to the Hindi–Urdu controversy, he was interested in the education of both Muslims and Hindus, and visualised India as a beautiful bride, whose one eye was Hindu and, the other, Muslim. As a result of this view, he was regarded as a reformer and nationalist leader.
There was a sudden change in Sir Syed's views after the Hindi–Urdu controversy: his education and reformist policies became Muslim-specific and he fought for the status of Urdu. His biographer, Hali, wrote, One day as Sir Syed was discussing educational affairs of Muslims with Mr. Shakespeare – the then Commissioner of Banaras – Mr. Shakespeare looked surprised and asked him, This is the first time when I have heard you talking specifically about Muslims. Before this you used to talk about the welfare of the common Indians. Sir Syed then told him, Now I am convinced that the two communities Muslims and Hindus will not put their hearts in any venture together. This is nothing it is just the beginning, in the coming times an ever increasing hatred and animosity appears on the horizon simply because of those who are regarded as educated. Those who will be around will witness it., (Hali, 1993).[6] Overall Sir Syed is hailed as the father of the Two Nation Theory and one of the founding fathers of Pakistan, along with Allama Iqbal and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.[7]
SIR SYED HALL (SOUTH), AMU, ALIGARH
Sir Syed's dream of uplifting the Muslims community in the field of Education was substantially realized when Lord Lytton laid the foundation stone of MAO College in 1877. Later his efforts bore fruits when MAO College was raised to the status of a University in 1920.
The premises of Sir Syed Hall are engraved on the hearts of Muslims in India. In Sir Syed Hall (South) complex many heritage buildings are included such as Strachey Hall, Mushtaq Manzil, Asman Manzil, Nizam Museum and Lytton Library. Besides these buildings the famous Victoria Gate (1883) is situated in the Southern direction of the Hall and Jama Masjid is in the North-West direction.
Historically AMU is a residential University. Sir Syed Hall is the oldest Hall of the University. In its character it differs from other halls of residence. In 1983 due to administrative reasons Sir Syed Hall was bifurcated into two halls and one portion was named Sir Syed Hall (South). There are 107 penta-seated rooms in the hall consisting of 6 hostels, in which 515 students are residing. This hall is an example of harmonious corporate living in the University where students each with his own diverse language and culture live together.

The main campus of AMU is located in the city of Aligarh. Spread over 467.6 hectares in the city of Aligarh, AMU offers more than 300 courses in the traditional and modern branches of education. t was established as Madrasatul Uloom Musalmanan-e-Hind in 1875–78, The Anglo–Indian statesman Syed Ahmad Khan founded the predecessor of AMU, Muhammadan Anglo Oriental College (MAO), in 1877 having already established two schools. He considered competence in English and Western sciences necessary skills for maintaining Muslims' political influence, especially in Northern India. Khan's image for the college was based on his visit to Oxford and Cambridge and he wanted to establish an education system similar to the British model. HH Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad and the Aga Khan III also played a major role in realising the idea of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan by collecting funds for building the Aligarh Muslim University
In the beginning the college was affiliated with the University of Calcutta but became an affiliate of Allahabad University in 1885. Around 1900 efforts began to make the college its own university. Its range of courses was expanded and a girls school was added in 1907 before it became the Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. The university was designed to train Muslims for government service in India and prepare them for advanced training in British universities.
In 1927, a school for the blind was established and, the following year, a medical school was attached to the university. By the end of the 1930s, the university had developed an Engineering faculty. Syed Zafarul Hasan, joined the Aligarh Muslim University in early 1900s as head of Philosophy Department, dean Faculty of Arts. He was a pro-vice chancellor before his retirement.
Before 1939, faculty members and students supported an all-India nationalist movement. After 1939, political sentiment shifted toward support for a Muslim separatist movement. University Students and faculty mobilised behind Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the University hence became an epicenter of Pakistan Movement.
