The History of Brisbane House - 150th Anniversary of Sir Thomas Brisbane
An original film from the archives about Brisbane House the residencce of Sir Thomas MakDougall Brisbane who died 150 years ago on the 27th January 1860. Jim Laurie narrates this film about the few remains of this once outstanding house in Brisbane Glen near Largs. Brisbane was the founder of the City of Brisbane Australia and he was Governor General of New South Wales as well making significant contributions to astronomy. A crater on the moon is named after him.

Brisbane (pronounced /ˈbrɪzbən/[4]) is the state capital of the Australian state of Queensland and is the largest city in that state. The statistical division of Brisbane has an estimated population of approximately 2 million, along with its LGA registering a bit over a million, it is also the third most populous city in Australia.
The city is situated on the Brisbane River on a low-lying floodplain between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range in southeastern Queensland. The local indigenous people knew the area as Mian-jin, meaning 'place shaped as a spike'.[5]
Brisbane is named after the river on which it sits which, in turn was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. Brisbane's demonym is a Brisbanite.
The first European settlement in Queensland was a penal colony at Redcliffe, 28 kilometres (17 mi) north of the Brisbane central business district, in 1824. That settlement was soon abandoned and moved to North Quay in 1825. Free settlers were permitted from 1842. Brisbane was chosen as the capital when Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859.
At a municipal level, the city is governed by the Brisbane City Council. In 1925, the City of Brisbane Act was passed by the Queensland Government, abolishing 20 local government authorities in the city and forming the largest local authority in Australia.[6]
The city played a central role in the Allied campaign during World War II as the South West Pacific headquarters for General Douglas MacArthur.
Brisbane is fast becoming a world city renowned for its culture, architecture[7] and landscape.[8] The metropolitan area is surrounded by many national parks, and contains many rivers, bays and inlets. The main airport serving Brisbane is Brisbane International Airport, located 14 km north-east of the CBD. In 2009, Brisbane passed Melbourne as Australia second major international airport on passenger volume.
Brisbane has hosted many large cultural and sporting events including the 1982 Commonwealth Games, World Expo '88 and the 2001 Goodwill Games. In 2008, Brisbane was classified as a gamma world city+ in the World Cities Study Groups inventory by Loughborough University.[9]
Tourism plays a major role in Brisbane's economy, being the third-most popular destination for international tourist after Sydney and Melbourne.[66] Popular tourist and recreation areas in Brisbane include the South Bank Parklands, Roma Street Parkland, the City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane Forest Park and Portside Wharf. The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary opened in 1927 and was the world's first koala sanctuary.[67]
The suburb of Mount Coot-tha is home to a popular state forest, and the Brisbane Botanic Gardens which houses the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and the Tsuki-yama-chisen Japanese Garden (formerly of the Japanese Government Pavilion of Brisbane's World Expo '88).
Brisbane has over 27 km (16.8 mi) of bicycle pathways, mostly surrounding the Brisbane river and city centre, extending to the west of the city.[68] The river itself, once in pristine condition, was popular with bathers and permitted boating excursions to Moreton Bay when the main port was in the city reaches.[67] Today fishing and boating are more common. Other popular recreation activities include the Story Bridge adventure climb and rock climbing at the Kangaroo Point cliffs.

Brisbane Lookout Mt. Coot-tha & Botanic Gardens 4K
If you visit Brisbane a little longer, then definitely worth a trip to the Lookout Mount Coot-tha. This popular spot for locals and visitors offers spectacular panoramic views of the CBD of Brisbane and the surrounding area. You can relax in the Kuta Cafe or in the Summit Restaurant. At the foot of the mountain is the Planetarium and Brisbane Botanic Gardens. It is considered the most important subtropical botanical gardens of Queensland. We were particularly impressed by the Japanese Garden, the Bonsai House, the Fern House, in the arid zone, the Cactus House and the exotic rainforest.

The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is located on the grounds of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens in the suburb of Toowong, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The Planetarium was officially opened on 24 May 1978.
The Planetarium is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of the colony of New South Wales (1821 - 1825) and well known Scottish astronomer who established the first significant observatory at Parramatta, Australia, in 1822 for mapping the southern skies. The Planetarium is located about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the Central Business District, and is administered by the Brisbane City Council.
The Planetarium features the 12.5m diameter Cosmic Skydome (hemispherical planetarium theatre) with a maximum concentric seating capacity of 130. Extensive space exploration and astronomy displays in the Planetarium's Foyer and Gallery include the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing with a replica of Neil Armstrong's space suit and a 1/48th-scale Saturn V rocket, meteorites, and numerous models of spacecraft, rockets, and astronomical instruments. In 2018, a major permanent exhibit - Skylore: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Astronomy - was installed in the Gallery. The original Zeiss star projector was removed from the Cosmic Skydome during the upgrade in 2010 and was placed on display in the foyer in early 2012. A replacement optical star projector by Ohira Tech was installed in the Cosmic Skydome in early 2013. A mini-theatre usually features a regularly updated Space Telescope Science Institute web feed. An observatory contains a permanently mounted Zeiss 15cm refractor and a Meade 25.4cm Go To Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.
The Planetarium runs more than 1,300 regular shows per year in the Cosmic Skydome for public and school groups, and observing sessions in the observatory. During Financial Year 2017/2018, the Planetarium had more than 155,000 visitors with nearly 80,000 attending sessions in the Cosmic Skydome.
A major upgrade for the Planetarium is scheduled for April/May 2019 to install a new digital projection system.
Access to the display areas and mini theatre is free. Admission charges apply for the Cosmic Skydome and the observatory. The Planetarium is closed on Mondays (except during most Queensland school holiday periods) and is usually closed for up to two weeks for servicing work following the December/January school holidays.
Outside exhibits adjacent to the Planetarium include a statue of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the Father of Cosmonautics and a large sundial in the Sundial Courtyard.

The Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha are Queensland's premier subtropical botanic gardens, displaying distinctly different gardens arranged in thematic and geographical displays.
These 56-hectare gardens are situated seven kilometres from the city centre, and offer a variety of environments including the largest collection of Australian native rainforest trees in the world and natural wildlife.
The Botanic Gardens are open every day between 8am to 6pm September to March and 8am to 5pm from April to August, and entry is free. Visitors can enjoy free guided tours Monday to Saturday at 11am and 1pm (public holidays excluded). Free mini bus tours are available on weekdays at 10.30am (excluding public holidays) departing from the Visitor Information Centre.
The gates are closed to vehicular traffic on weekends and public holidays. The Botanic Gardens features a Japanese Garden, Tropical Dome, Children’s Playground and The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is also located on the grounds. Dogs are not permitted.
The Gardens Café is open daily with a capacity of 150 people. Dine in a relaxing and tranquil setting. Modern Australian cuisine is served in the main cafe with light snacks, devonshire teas and ice creams also available.
