The Sirhind Canal Punjab India
The Sirhind Canal is a large irrigation canal that carries water from the Sutlej River in Punjab state, India. It is one of the oldest and biggest irrigation works in the Indus river system, and was inaugurated in 1882 CE. The canal begins at Ropar headworks near Ropar city in Rupnagar district of Punjab.

Ropar, also spelled Rupar, also called Rupnagar, town, eastern Punjab state, northwestern India. The town lies on the Sutlej River near the head of the great Sirhind Canal, about (32 km) northwest of Chandigarh.
The Ropar area has been inhabited for millennia, and the present-day town is the site of a centre of the ancient Indus civilization. Ropar is on a branch rail line that roughly follows the Sutlej northward into Himachal Pradesh state. It is a marketplace for agricultural products and has small weaving and iron products industries. It is also known for the manufacture of locks. There is a branch campus of the Indian Institute of Technology in the town, and a thermal power-generating station is nearby.

Bus carrying 30 people falls into sirhind canal in Punjab
A bus having atleast 30 passengers aboard fell into a canal near Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab this morning. The rescue operations are being carried out by the police forces and the possibility of casualties cannot be ruled out.
