Five dead after boat capsizes in reservoir in northern Thailand
Five people drowned after a ferry hit a submerged tree trunk and capsized in a reservoir in northern Thailand.
The vessel was carrying ten passengers and the captain across the vast expanse of water at the Sirikit dam in Uttaradit province on Monday (January 20) morning.
But mid-way through the journey - with none of those onboard wearing life jackets - the small wooden ferry hit a tree stump, which was closer to the surface following weeks of severe drought.
The boat capsized and rescuers from Uttaradit Songkroh Foundation immediately began a search and rescue mission.
One person was found dead, while the bodies of another four were later recovered. The captain of the boat was among those killed.
Police Major Prasert Sithilert, from the Tha Pla district police station, said the boat left the village shortly after 9am with 10 passengers and the boat's owner-operator on board. The boat was also carrying agricultural goods.
The police chief said the first drowned passenger Sunitra Noikhan, 25, was found shortly after the accident.
Rescuers continued the search throughout the afternoon and in the evening found the three missing passengers Chan Noikhan, 71, Sanit Noikhan, 57, and Preeda Apiya, 42, and the captain Prarean Apiya, 50.
The region's harbor department director, Atiruj Chumrun, blamed the drought for causing the accident.
He said: We ran an initial investigation on the incident and suspect that the reason behind this terrible accident was because of the decreasing water level.
The captain is likely to have been confused and following an unsafe course across the dam, due to the low level of the water.
We found that the boat was equipped with the safety equipment but the registration was expired.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Thai cuisine (Thai: อาหารไทย, RTGS: ahan thai, pronounced [ʔāː.hǎːn tʰāj]) is the national cuisine of Thailand.
Thai cooking places emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with strong aromatic components and a spicy edge. Thai chef McDang characterises Thai food as demonstrating intricacy; attention to detail; texture; color; taste; and the use of ingredients with medicinal benefits, as well as good flavor, as well as care being given to the food's appearance, smell and context. Australian chef David Thompson, an expert on Thai food, observes that unlike many other cuisines, Thai cooking rejects simplicity and is about the juggling of disparate elements to create a harmonious finish.
In 2017, seven Thai dishes appeared on a list of the World's 50 Best Foods— an online poll of 35,000 people worldwide by CNN Travel. Thailand had more dishes on the list than any other country. They were: tom yam goong (4th), pad Thai (5th), som tam (6th), massaman curry (10th), green curry (19th), Thai fried rice (24th) and mu nam tok (36th).
