Mountain Travel in Sirmilik National Park
Take a step inside one of Canada's most remote national parks with a team of five Parks Canada staff as they travel through the rugged Baffin Island landscape on a 4 day trip up the Aktineq Glacier.
Sirmilik in Inuktitut means Place of Glaciers. So in order to work in this environment and keep visitors safe, staff need solid travel skills.
The purpose of the trip was to complete a mountain travel course designed to review the latest mountain travel and avalanche risk assessment skills. Led by Banff, Yoho and Kootenay National Park Visitor Safety Specialist Lisa Paulson, Nunavut Field Unit staff members Andrew Maher, Tyler Harbidge, Mark Benson and Brian Koonoo from Pond Inlet and Iqaluit were on hand for the trip. Along the way, the team also gathered data on several glacier ablation monitoring plots.
The park usually has less than 100 southern visitors per year, but is travelled and used by local Inuit on a daily basis, in all seasons.
Ambitions to climb Mt. Mitima were thwarted by an intense storm that delivered 20-30 cm of snow to the region.
SOI Arctic 2017: Sirmilik Historic Site Visit
The expedition recently visited Sirmilik National Park. Sirmilik means place of glaciers in Inuktitut, referring to Bylot Island's abundance of glaciers and ice caps. We were lucky to be able to visit Qaiqsut, an ancient Thule site, with elders and guides from the community of Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet and Parks Canada Nunavut. Hear Canadian Museum of Nature paleobiologist Kieran Shepherd speak to the archaeological evidence of Inuit history and culture in the area.

2013 Arctic Expedition
The RMC Expedition Club 2013 Arctic expedition team flew to Pond Inlet, NU to spend eight days trekking through often-treacherous terrain. The team hiked inland to Mount Morin and its surrounding glaciers.
On their expedition they encountered numerous leadership challenges such as crossing rivers with a team of eight and traversing steep cliffs with heavily weighted packs. Another significant challenge was carrying the required food for eight people for eight days.

L'équipe de l'expédition Arctique 2013 du Club d'expédtion du CMR s'est rendu à Pond Inlet, NU pour y passer huit jours de trek à travers un terrain souvent perfide. L'équipe a s'est rendu au Mont Morin pour parcourir ses valléées et ses glaciers environnants.
Sur leur expédition, ils ont rencontré de nombreux problèmes de leadership tel que de traverser des rivières profondes avec une équipe de huit personnes et traversant des falaises abruptes avec des sacs à dos très lourds. Un autre défi important fut de porter la nourriture nécessaire pour huit personnes pendant huit jours.

Sirmilik National Park (; Inuktitut: the place of glaciers) is a protected area located in Qikiqtaaluk, Nunavut, Canada, established in 1999. Situated within the Arctic Cordillera, the park is composed of three areas: most of Bylot Island with the exception for a few areas that are Inuit-owned lands, Oliver Sound, and Baffin Island's Borden Peninsula. Much of the park is bordered by water.
Geographically, it is representative of the Northern Eastern Arctic Lowlands Natural Region as well as parts of the Lancaster Sound Marine Region. Sirmilik is part of the National parks of Canada.

The Students on Ice (SOI) 2019 Arctic Expedition educated, inspired and empowered high school and university students from around the world through land, ship and ocean-based learning about the Arctic from a team of scientists, elders, artists, historians, innovators, business and policy leaders.
Together, youth learned about the past, present and future of the Arctic, the challenges and opportunities we face as a global society, and the importance of youth engagement.
This video captures the impact of the journey on Marissa Abrahams (Haida Gwaii), Joshua Monteith (Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet), Maria Fustic (Fort McMurray) and includes perspectives from Sirmilik National Park Director Carey Elverum. Their expedition was supported by Parks Canada.

This Park is quite literally on top of the world. Visitors here number in dozens annually, and some years not even that many make the trip. It is remote and beautiful. However, even in this pristine surrounding you can find the ugly footprint of humans. Bases for arctic exploration are littered with garbage, some of it toxic. The effects of climate change are felt in the melting polar cap and the 20 degree heat. To visit Quttinirpaaq National Park is to see the best and the worst this world has to offer.
