Subscribe here: - Let's visit Sirmione which is one of the most popular sights on Lake Garda, with thousands of visitors flooding in each day to view the picturesque peninsula. It may not be the best known place to stay for a lake holiday in Italy, but images of the castle, the fortress and the thermal baths feature in every information booklet about Lake Garda.
Sirmione is a resort town on the southern bank of Lake Garda, in northern Italy. It’s known for its thermal baths and Rocca Scaligera, a medieval castle overlooking the lake. Set at the tip of a peninsula, the Archaeological Site of Grotte di Catullo encompasses a Roman villa, a museum and olive trees. Just below the ruins is the rocky Jamaica Beach. The church of San Pietro in Mavino is adorned with frescoes.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Travel Italy - Visiting Sirmione Castle
Take a tour of Sirmione Castle in Italy -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Sirmione Castle sits on a spit jutting out into the waters of Lake Garda, on the shore of an Italian commune of the same name.
The castle was built in the thirteenth century and displays many elements from the High Middle Ages, including crenellated walls and towers.
A highly visited feature of this structure visit is the main tower from which the lake and castle courtyard are visible.
The moat surrounding the castle is now the wading ground of ducks and swans, and is not used for defensive purposes.
A unique feature of this already singular castle is its fortified port, used both for access to the castle and for deploying ships into battle.
Medieval Sirmione Castle is a perfect platform for viewing the landscape and surrounding city.

SIRMIONE (source Wikipedia):
Sirmione is a comune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy (northern Italy). It is bounded by the comunes of Desenzano del Garda (Lombardy) and Peschiera del Garda in the province of Verona and the region of Veneto. It has a historical centre which is located on the Sirmio peninsula that divides the lower part of Lake Garda.
The main historical landmark of Sirmione is the so-called Grottoes of Catullus (Grotte di Catullo), the most striking example of a Roman private edifice discovered in northern Italy. The edifice had a rectangular plan and measured 167 x 105 m. The town is famous for its thermal springs.
Other sights include:
The Scaligero Castle (13th century). This is a rare example of medieval port fortification, which was used by the Scaliger fleet. The building of this complex started in 1277 by Mastino della Scala. It presents the typical Ghibelline swallowtail merlons and the curtain-walls (with three corner towers) in pebbles alternating with two horizontal bands of brick courses. The walls on the inside were finished with plaster with graffiti, simulating blocks of stone. The castle stands at a strategic place at the entrance to the peninsula. It is surrounded by a moat and it can only be entered by two drawbridges. The castle was established mainly as a protection against enemies, but also against the locals. The main room houses a small museum with local finds from the Roman era and a few medieval artifacts.
The small church Sant’Anna della Rocca, next to the castle. It dates from the 12th century and was used mainly by the garrison and the few local villagers. The frescoes in the church date from the 14th - 17th century.
The first traces of human presence in the area of Sirmione dates from the 6th-5th millennia BC. Settlements on palafitte existed in the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC.
Starting from the 1st century BC, the area of the Garda, including what is now Sirmione, became a favourite resort for rich families coming from Verona, then the main Roman city in north-eastern Italy. The poet Catullus praised the beauties of the city and spoke of a villa he had in the area.
In the late Roman era (4th-5th centuries AD) the city became a fortified strongpoint defending the southern shore of the lake. A settlement existed also after the Lombard conquest of northern Italy: in the late years of the Lombard kingdom, the city was capital of a judiciary district directly subordinated to the king. Ansa, wife of King Desiderius, founded a monastery and a church in the city.
Sirmione, Lake Garda, Italy & Grotte di Catullo Roman Ruins - 4K 60FPS
4K Ultra HD 60FPS Aerial video of Sirmione, on Lake Garda.
Beautiful views of ancient ruins of a Roman Villa. The location is also known as Grotte di Catullo, Catullo being a famous poet born in the Verona region and thought to possibly be the owner of the Villa. Grottoes of Catullus is the name given to the ruins of this Roman villa at the northernmost end of the peninsula of Sirmione on the southern shore of Lago di Garda. Today, researchers believe the extensive ruins are from a grand home started near the end of the first century B.C., after the poet is believed to have died. It was built for a wealthy family from Verona, in whose territory Sirmione lay during the Roman period. The villa is on the end of a tip of land poking into the lake, with gorgeous views on three sides.
The video was filmed in 4k with a Mavic Pro 2.

Places to see in ( Sirmione - Italy )
Sirmione is a comune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy. It is bounded by the comunes of Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera del Garda in the province of Verona and the region of Veneto.
Alot to see in ( Sirmione - Italy ) such as :
13th century Scaliger Castle with its' drawbridge form the only entrance to the town, the magnificently restored castle is very popular with day trippers and in high season can be very overcrowded.
Catullo's Grotto is the excavated ruins (scavi) of the massive Roman villa at the headland on the tip of the peninsula. The villa is known as Grotte di Catullo (Catullo's Caves) stuns the visitor with its' amazing scale. A small museum at the entrance provides some extra interest. There are inspiring views from the headland and a wonderful olive grove with magnificently gnarled ancient trees. Visitors staying in the historic part of Sirmione may enjoy a stroll out to the villa scavi after breakfast before the sun gets too hot and the crowds too hectic. There is a small park and cafe at the museum entrance which provides a welcome chance to cool off. Entry to the scavi & museum is modestly priced but particularly if you are an early visitor it may help to have small Euro notes and coins to hand. N.B.: Like many other public museums in Italy the site is closed on Mondays. The museum is excellent if unspectacular but the ruins are truly magnificent. Once you have clambered over the ruins take time on the path back to exit to enjoy the peace and shade of the olive grove on the high ground above the museum buildings.
Church of San Pietro in Mavino built in the time of the Lombards and repaired in the 14th century, it contains frescoes dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries and a bell tower from 1070. Located adjacent to the local war memorial on a hill above Catullo's Grotto a visit to the church is can be combined with a visit to the scavi. Although the church is not much to look at from the outside the interior is surprising.
Church of Santa Maria Maggiore 14th Centory decorated with 15th century frescoes.
Lakeside Markets The towns along both sides of the lake host markets which work their way up the lake from town to town up. Each town has a market day and the markets are packed up and gone by lunch time. The markets are tremedous fun but don't expect massive bargains.
Sirmione's nearest markets are Mondays at Colombare (south of Sirmione) and Fridays at Lugana di Sirmione (SE of Sirmione). However if you are staying in Sirmione's old town these markets are not well placed and I would suggest combining a market visit with a ferry trip to Bardolino or Garda town.
In Bardolino the market arrives early on Thursday morning and stretches along the lake side path from the the Hotel Kriss to about 150 meters north of the harbour area.
In Garda town the market arrives on Friday morning and as at Bardolino spans the lake shore around the harbour. To enjoy the markets I would advise buying a catching an early ferry, and buying a South of the Lake Ticket (Euro 23.40 in 2013) this is a one day hop on hop off ticket that gives ferry travel between any of the towns in the southern part of Lake Garda enabling you to visit more than one town in a day.
( Sirmione - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Sirmione. Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Sirmione - Italy

English (für Deutsch siehe unten):
Mastino I della Scala of Verona starts to build the castle in Sirmione in 1277/78 to gain more control over the region of south lake garda. Venecia annected Sirmione in 1405, which most likely resulted in the harbour fortifications, which are influenced by the arsenal in Venetia.
We were so impressed by these mediaval walls, towers, battlements, baileys and drawbridges, that we decided to present them in a small video. We just put some italien classic music below the natural atmosphere and put all comments and information into closed caption: Like this, they can be translated, corrected, extended and there is no need for an annoying voice in the audio track... Enjoy!

Deutsch:
