I arrived having used public transport. I took the train from Charing Cross to Staplehurst, then the number 5 bus to Sissinghurst village. It is a LONG walk to the castle, but I was rewarded with a plentiful supply of ripe blackberries in the hedgerows!

Harold Nicolson und Vita Sackville-West unterteilten das rund fünf Hektar große Gelände in zehn abgeschlossene Gartenräume. Als ‚Wände‘ dienen mehr als mannshohe, akkurat geschnittene Eibenhecken; aber auch erhaltene Mauern ehemaliger Gebäude wurden mit einbezogen.
Jeder der ‚Gärten im Garten‘ hat ein bestimmtes Thema; so gibt es den Weißen Garten, den Rosengarten und den Kräutergarten. Die Gestaltung des Gartens verbindet eine große Schlichtheit der Gesamtanlage mit opulenter Bepflanzung.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden is a historical country house in the English county of Kent, about 40 kilometers southwest of Canterbury. Made famous is the garden, which was created in 1930 by Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson and obtained in this form. Today Sissinghurst is owned by the National Trust. The open to the public system is one year to one of the favorite gardens in the world with over 160,000 paying visitors. The complex consists of five individually standing buildings: the main house, the long library, the (Double) Tower, the South Cottage and the Priest's House.
Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West split the approximately five hectare site in ten completed garden spaces. When, walls' are more than man-high, accurately cut yew hedges; well preserved walls of former buildings were involved.
Each of the, gardens in the garden 'has a specific theme; so there is the white garden, the rose garden and the herb garden. The design of the garden combines a great simplicity of the entire system with opulent planting.

Irises are the shooting stars of the summer garden. We look at the stunning collection of historic irises at Sissinghurst Castle Garden and learn how the Gardeners are bringing back some of the lost irises of Sissinghurst, in order to restore Vita and Harold's original collection. Sissinghurst Castle Gardens
Sissinghurst Castle Garden is located near Tunbridge Wells in Kent. It was owned by Vita Sackville West and Harold Nicolson who acquired the property in the 1930s. They spend thirty years restoring the property and creating the gardens that are featured in this film. Vita Sackville West was Poet and author and wrote for the Observer newspaper and Harold was a diplomat and journalist. Vita used to go to the roof of the tower to write her poetry. When Sackville West died in 1962 the gardens were given to the National Trust to oversea. The Sackville West family stay at the cottage on the estate one month of the year.
This is a beautiful example of horticulture and I would recommend a visit,

Sissinghurst Castle Visit - a National Trust property in Kent, UK (Apr 2013)
Sissinghurst is a National Trust property near Cranbrook, Kent, UK. It has a lovely ruins of an Elizabethan manor house and famous gardens,created by Vita Sackville-West and her husband. Sissinghurst Castle Cranbrook Kent - Vita Sackville West's Garden
If you like gardens this must be one of the best in the country, it is set out as a number of rooms each time you turn a corner or move around you a greeted with new views. There is also some footage taken from the top of the tower, a bit shaky I'm afraid but a lovely view. Sissinghurst Castle is a National Trust property and definitely worth a visit.

In our continuing series on top gardens in Europe we travel to Britain to check out Sissinghurst which is north of Brighton. The area was developped in the 1930s by the English writer Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson. It comprises of small enclosed compartments giving each garden its own character, for example there is a white garden.
