Trip to Alishan and tea production in Taiwan
The Trees of Alishan in Taiwan
Professor Davis discovers the beautiful Taiwanese cypress trees of Alishan. Many of these millennia-old beauties were harvested by Japanese occupiers in the early 1900s. Fortunately others have survived and are now protected by the government for all to enjoy.
Alishan National Scenic Area (阿里山国家风景区) | Travel Guide
Alishan is world-famous for having “five wonders; and they are Alishan Forest Railway, the forest trail, sunrise, sunset and Sea of clouds. This national park is considered the most representative of Taiwan’s tourist destinations both domestically and globally.
Alishan National Scenic Area also known as Mount Ali. It is a very popular tourist attraction in Taiwan, very famous for the production of high mountain tea and for the iconic sea of clouds.
A vantage spot over 2,600 meters above sea level, way higher than the clouds in fact, is the best place to enjoy these two natural attractions.
You need to wake up at 03:30 a.m. if you want to see the sunrise. Highly recommend you to take about 20 minute to walk to the Mt. Ogasawara Viewing Point小笠原山秘境(2488 above sea level) for better view. The scenery is so unforgettable. The atmosphere of people waiting for sunrise is great.
Alishan Forest Recreation Area is at the 89K point of the Alishan Highway and at the end of the Alishan Mountain Railway. Alishan itself doesn’t have a peak and it is actually composed of 18 mountains such as Jialun Mountain, Zhu Mountain, and Data Mountain etc.
A sea of clouds is an overcast layer of clouds, viewed from above, with a relatively uniform top which shows undulations of very different lengths resembling waves. A sea of fog is formed from stratus clouds or fog and does not show undulations.
In both cases, the phenomenon looks very similar to the open ocean. The comparison is even more complete if some mountain peaks rise above the clouds, thus resembling islands.
Greater Tashan Trail (大塔山) The Greater Tashan is the highest of the Tashan peaks, at 2663 m. Depending on the weather, you will either have a wide vista from the observation platform at the top, or will admire a sea of clouds. A good trail leads up to the peak and takes about 1½-2 hours going up from its entry point nearby the Two Sisters Pond, a bit less going down again. The trail is blissfully free of tour groups due to its medium difficulty, with some quite steep stairs on the way, but it should be doable for anyone in decent walking shape. Bring something to drink and appropriate sun protection, as even if Alishan village is cloudy, the peak can still bask in full sun due to its higher altitude.
The Alishan Sacred Tree is one of the most notable Alishan attractions. The tree is located at the Sacred Tree (Shenmu) Railway Station with an elevation over 2000 meters above sea level. The Sacred Tree is known as Shenmu in Mandarin with an age over 3,000 years. This giant tree and dozens of younger generations of giant trees are one of the top five Alishan must-see sceneries along with sunrise, sunset, forest railway, and sea of clouds.
Ciyun Temple is one of the best places in Alishan to view the cloud sea, the red clouds of evening and the sunset.

Travel in Taiwan (2016, 1/2)
By Richard Saunders
A ride along the Pingxi Branch Railway Line, which runs through a picturesque valley about an hour from the Taipei City center by train, is a great way to spend a day of relaxing sightseeing, but it also provides easy access to some of northern Taiwan’s finest day walks. Hikers are truly spoilt for choice in this area: there’s enough to discover hereabouts to keep an explorer happy for a week of hikes or more. If there’s only time to do one of the easier routes, however, the choice is pretty clear. One of the finest short hikes within day-tripping distance of Taipei is the stunningly scenic Sandiaoling Waterfall Trail.
The Sandiaoling Waterfall Trail is named for three waterfalls, Hegu, Motian, and Pipa Cave, all three impressive, though the first can only be seen from a distance. It takes about two hours to get from Sandiaoling Railway Station to the last of the falls (about 2.5km). From there, most casual hikers will take the same route back, but for more adventurous types there are two alternative routes, one to Dahua, the next station on the Pingxi line, the other to Houtong, the station before Sandiaoling when coming from Taipei.
Getting to the trailhead is easy. Take a Local Train (NT$59 one way; about one hour) from Taipei Main Station to Sandiaoling, a tiny settlement picturesquely set in the densely wooded valley of the young Keelung River. Leaving the station, follow the tracks away from the Taipei direction towards a tunnel. Before the tunnel, the Pingxi line splits off from the main trunk line, which heads to the northeast coast. Take the pedestrian underpass under the railway, and then follow the path beside the Pingxi line. After walking about ten minutes, the tracks enter a small settlement, passing the pale-blue building of the abandoned village elementary school across the tracks. Cross the tracks (keeping a lookout for trains!) and you have reached the trailhead, which is right beside the school building. Walk up the concrete path, passing a few houses and following the steps, to reach the wooded hillside above.
After a short ascent the trail levels out, and then it’s an easy 30-minute walk through mixed woodland, including several attractive bamboo groves, to the first of the three waterfalls. Hegu Waterfall, 40 meters in height, plunges into a deep gorge below, and can be seen in the distance from a flat observation area to the left of the path.
Above Hegu Waterfall, the path joins the stream of the waterfalls for the first time, crosses a pair of small suspension bridges, and continues along the left bank of the stream, now through thick jungle. The trail becomes narrower, and is a little rough in places, with some slippery tree roots and small rocks to negotiate, but the scenery is beautiful. After 20 minutes the trail reaches the foot of Motian Waterfall, which falls well clear of the cliff face.
A small wooden viewing platform offers great views of the waterfall from below. More adventurous walkers can follow the trail a few meters further as it starts to climb out of the gorge, then turn right at a junction and traverse a short but muddy path that leads into the overhang, where it’s possible to get right behind the waterfall.
To continue the walk to the third fall, head back to the junction and turn right to continue along the main path, which climbs out of the gorge via a newly installed metal staircase. At the top, less than a hundred meters above the second fall, is Pipa Cave Waterfall, a slightly smaller version of its sister below, which leaps over an overhanging cliff of golden sandstone. Both waterfalls are perfect spots for a rest or a picnic lunch, although the upper fall is generally quieter on busy weekends.

TAIWAN V.5: December 27, 2016
Day 5 was spent riding a bus to Ita Thao, a village on Sun Moon Lake. We arrive at our Airbnb, and then go exploring after we realize we can't check in early.
We rent bikes, and ride on the crazy road to Wen Wu Temple, where we try out a new soda, and eat Taro Mochi. We ride our bikes down to the ropeway, and Kelly gets attacked by a large stick.
We end the vlog by going back to our Airbnb, and give a tour of the cabin.
SPOILER ALERT: There IS A SHOWER!
Thanks for sticking around!

Taiwan in 10 days (2018)
5 counties with countless spectacular places and indescribable cuisine made our journey unforgettable. In such short time, my sister and I was not able to explore the southern part of Taiwan. (definitely one of the many reasons to come back)
Started our venture in
(1) Hualien county to hike the narrowed cliff of Zhuilu Old Trail and bike the slopes of Taroko Gorge National Park.
(2) Nantou county was our next stop to visit Sun Moon Lake and Formosan Village
(3) Chiayi county to visit Alishan National Scenic Area and experience the forest train.
(4) New Taipei in where we could fly our lantern (Pingxi/Shifen district) and visited Spirited's Away inspired tea house (Jiufen)
(5) Taipei to not miss the local food in night markets and appreciate their history by visiting some landmarks.

Travel in Taiwan (Jan./Feb., 2017):
Jiufen
A trip to the mountain village of Jiufen and its “little sister,” Jinguashi, sits atop the list of things to do for many tourists visiting Taiwan. Both settlements are located in the scenic coastal mountains overlooking the northeast coast, both were once thriving mining centers (copper and gold), and both are worth spending a good amount of time exploring. Below are five places and things to experience/check out/enjoy while there.
Jiufen Old Street
After arriving at Jiufen, most tourists head straight to the Old Street, a narrow and winding pedestrian-only alley lined with souvenir shops and eateries on both sides. Apart from trying some yummy hot or cold (depending on time of year) tapioca and sweet-potato ball soup (Jiufen’s best-known specialty), have a cup of tea at Jiufen A Mei Teahouse, in a beautiful and well-preserved wooden structure with great views, and visit the close-by Shengping Theater, Taiwan’s first cinema, built in 1914 to entertain miners during the heyday of mining in Jiufen.
Jiufen Evening Scenery
Back in Jiufen, make sure to stick around until the evening when the weather is fine. The mountainside-hugging town faces the northwest, meaning that the sun will set to the left when looking out over the coast. The sunset can be quite remarkable and dramatic, especially when there is a scattering of clouds in the sky, a common occurrence on the northeast coast.
Getting there:
Bus from Taipei: There is frequent bus service (No. 1062) from near MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station (Exit 1) in downtown Taipei to Jiufen and Jinguashi. The ride takes about an hour.
Railway plus bus: Alternatively, take an eastbound train (heading to Yilan/Hualien) to Ruifang and transfer to a bus bound for Jiufen/Jinguashi or further on to Fulong (passing the Golden Waterfall).
