【English】All About Hiraizumi #10 -Kanjizaio-in Ato and Muryoko-in Ato(Muryoko-in Temple Remains)-
Second generation Fujiwara lord Motohira commissioned Motsu-ji Temple. Next to it, his wife commissioned Kanjizaio-in Temple.
All the buildings were later destroyed but the site has been restored according to the results of excavation and research and is now used as a public space.
When you walk into the park, Maizurugaike is straight ahead. This pond is almost 90m square and contains elements such as islands, a soft curving beach and a rocky cascade, following the precepts of the Sakuteiki gardening treatise.
Although small in scale, it is possible to imagine Kanjizaio-in as a Pure Land garden of the highest quality in the Heian era.
Beside the pond there is a site for ox-cart parking and on the far side, an Amida Hall.
Hiraizumi was at its peak during the time of third generation Fujiwara lord Motohira.
Kiyohira commissioned Chuson-ji, Motohira commissioned Motsu-ji and Muryoko-in was the temple commissioned by Hidehira,
The site of the pond and the foundation stones have been preserved with special care over the centuries and these enable us to imagine what it might have looked like in the Heian era.
Muryoko-in, said to have been based upon the Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in, is even larger in scale and was orientated so that twice a year, in Spring and Autumn, the sunset would be aligned with the summit of Mt. Kinkeisan and the centre of the hall, representing the Buddhist land of Utmost Bliss.
Today, all that can be seen in Kanjizaio-in is an Edo era Amida Hall.
A Weeping Festival is held here every year on the 4th of May. The festival is said to be a recreation of Motohira's widow's funeral and has been held annually for more than 800 years. After chanting sutras, priests carry a small palanquin, representing Motohira's widow's coffin, around the Amida Hall.
The chanting of the sutras sounds like weeping. This subdued festival has been passed down through the generations.

【English】All about Hiraizumi #56 Muryoko-in and Yanaginogosho
It was during the time of the third Fujiwara lord Hidehira that Hiraizumi flourished the most. Chuson-ji was commissioned by the first Fujiwara lord Kiyohira, Motsu-ji by the second lord Motohira and Muryoko-in by the third lord Hidehira. Presently, traces of a pond and foundation stones can be seen in this precious cultural property making it possible to imagine how it looked in former times. The Main Hall was built in imitation of the Byodo-in of Uji and not only was it larger than its model but it was also specially constructed in a line with Mt. Kinkeisan so that the sun set directly behind the summit twice a year in Spring and Autumn.
Yanaginogosho Iseki is thought to be the site of Hiraizumi no Tachi, the administrative
headquarters of Hidehira. The pond has been restored and today the site is open to the public as a historic park. In the Yanaginogosho Museum there are many artifacts excavated from the site that show us aspects of 12th century Hiraizumi culture. One of these is a seal carved with the characters 'Iwasaki village seal' which was the first village seal ever discovered in Japan and evidence that Yanaginogosho was a political centre. Also, enormous quantities of disposable earthenware cups called kawarake that were used at banquets or political ceremonies, were found in a wide area surrounding Yanaginogosho Iseki.
Excavation and research is still being carried out in the town of Hiraizumi and there is a high possibility that new artifacts will be discovered at any time.

Broadcasted on February 10th, 2016
The history of Hiraizumi
Kanjizaio-in Ato adjacent to Motsu-ji is the remains of a temple that is believed to have been built by the wife of the second lord Motohira. Maizurugaike (Dancing Crane Pond) was restored to its original state with excavation and research. It has an island at the center, and stone arrangement which represent waterfall at rough sea and curved beach. The way to design faithfully followed the ideas of 'Sakuteiki' as well as Oizumigaike (Great Spring Pond) in Motsu-ji. Although the scale is small, it is believed to have been the first class of Pure Land Garden in the Heian period.
A building behind the pond is the hall, reconstructed in the Edo period. As it was in the olden days, Amida Nyorai is enshrined there.
Following Chuson-ji by the first lord Kiyohira, and Motsu-ji by the second lord Motohira, the third lord Hidehira established Muryoko-in.
Muryoko-in modeled on Byodoin Houodo in Uji Kyoto was larger than that. Amida Nyorai was enshrined at the center of the hall, which was designed to see the sun set over the top of Mt. Kinkeisan standing behind Muryoko-in twice a year. The teachings of Buddha which was inherited from Kiyohira and Motohira was embodied by Hidehira in the ultimate style.
Mt. Kinkeisan standing behind Muryoko-in is one of the sites in Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage. In 1930, cylindrical sutra container was excavated at the summit, which showed that Mt. Kinkeisan was Kyouzuka (a mound where sutra was buried).
The sutra was buried so that the teachings revive again, even if the teachings of Buddha disappeared. It was an important mountain for Oshu Fujiwara clan who aimed at peaceful city with no war.
Five consisting assets, including these three, Chuson-ji, and Motsu-ji are unprecedented legacies based on the idea of Pure Land. They are registered as World Cultural Heritage and pass down the wishes for peace to the present.

【English】All about Hiraizumi #40 Muryoko-in Ato and Yanaginogosho Iseki
In Hiraizumi, the Oshu Fujiwara clan managed to create a peaceful society based on Buddhist philosophy. Hiraizumi was at its heyday at the time of the third Fujiwara lord Hidehira. The first Fujiwara lord Kiyohira commissioned Chuson-ji and the second lord Motohira commissioned Motsu-ji. The temple commissioned by the third lord Hidehira was Muryoko-in.
Many foundation stones and the remains of a pond reveal the historical appearance of Muryoko-in Ato, which has been preserved with care as one of Hiraizumi's cultural assets. It was designed to resemble the Byodo-in Ho-o-do (Phoenix Hall) of Uji near Kyoto although it is believed to have been larger. Muryoko-in was also specially positioned in consideration of the surrounding natural landscape so that twice a year the sun would set behind Mt. Kinkeisan and also be aligned with the Main Hall. This temple was the ultimate creation of Hidehira, based on the Buddhist philosophy of peace inherited from his father and grandfather.
Hidehira also maintained an Administrative Headquarters by which the Michinoku region (northeastern Japan) was governed. The Headquarters, called Hiraizumi no Tachi, were situated in the Yanaginogosho area which was also where Kiyohira and Hidehira's mansion stood. When the massive flood control project of constructing the Ichinoseki Retarding Basin started in 1988, an emergency archeological excavation was planned and carried out. During this excavation, an outstanding quantity and quality of historical artifacts and ruins were found. As they were particularly concentrated at this place among the many 12th century remains in Hiraizumi, it was strongly recommended that this must have been Hidehira's Administrative Headquarters, the Hiraizumi no Tachi. The most commonly found artifacts are the kawarake, earthenware saké cups.
These were used on celebratory or political occasions and were designed to be disposable. An astonishing amount of more than 10 tons was excavated in this area. This evidence also suggests that the Yanaginogosho area was the political centre of Michinoku.

Broadcasted on June 24th, 2015
World Heritage Site, Hiraizumi, has five component sites.
Its property name is ‘Temples, Gardens, and Archaeological Sites Representing the Buddhist Pure Land’.
As there were many temples and remains from the era when Oshu Fujiwara clan prospered, the Cultural Heritage of Hiraizumi was inscribed on the World Heritage List, the first in Tohoku Region, in 2011.
In 2014, ‘Hiraizumi World Heritage Day’ was established by the ordinance of Iwate prefectural government and various events were held in the town.
What kind of events are planned this year?
We interviewed mayor of Hiraizumi Town.
Mayer Yukio Aoki, Hiraizumi Town
We consider ‘Hiraizumi World Heritage Day’ on June 29th to be the ‘Day of Prayer’ for world peace and will hold an event called ‘Prayer for Peace’. This year, it will be held in Motsu-ji. The whole town will participate in the event, everyone from children, senior citizens and monks and priests of the temples and shrines in the town.
We would like it to be the day we all pray for world peace and bring it to the whole world.
Q: Will you tell us about the repairs of some historical sites taking place in Hiraizumi?
A: I believe people fell at home when they see the scenery of Muryoko-in Ato filled with water. With more such environmental development taking place, the charms of Hiraizumi, as World Heritage Site, will increase as one of the stages of Japanese history and the place of ancient classical literature. You will see more development in the future.

【English】All about Hiraizumi #34 Deciphering the Fujiwara era
The Azuma Kagami (the official record of the Kamakura shogunate) is a historical document written in the 12th century, which includes detailed records of Hiraizumi at the time of the Oshu Fujiwara. The original has been lost but the contents are known from copies and research.
Written chronologically, it records a period of 87 years including the Genpei gassen (war between Taira and Minamoto clans) and the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate. It also includes many descriptions of Hiraizumi. One of the most noteworthy is an entry from the 17th September 1189 which describes the 'Jitoikachumon', a report about Hiraizumi after the fall of the Fujiwara family, which was compiled by the Chuson-ji monks on the orders of Minamoto no Yoritomo.
For example:
'About Kanzan Chuson-ji -- when first Fujiwara lord Kiyohira became the ruler of the Back Six Districts of Oshu, his first action was to commission this temple complex.' It also describes the 15m high Nikaidaido and the Konjikido.
'About Motsu-ji -- there were more than 40 halls and pagodas and over 500 priests' residences.' Kondo Enryu-ji is described as being lavishly decorated with gold, silver and precious stones while the inner walls of Kanjizaio-in's large Amida Hall were painted with famous scenes from around Kyoto.
Furthermore, it reports that Muryoko-in was modeled on Uji's Byodo-in, Yanaginogosho was situated to the north of Muryoko-in and that in front of Kanjizaio-in there were many treasure warehouses.
There are almost no written records or traces of buildings in Hiraizumi as a result of fires and warfare, therefore the Azuma Kagami is an invaluable resource that helps us to decipher Hiraizumi's history.

【English】All About Hiraizumi #4 Mt. Kinkeisan (Golden Cockerel Hill) and Hiraizumi
Mt. Kinkeisan is exactly midway between Chuson-ji and Motsu-ji and is 98.6m high.
It is said that Fujiwara no Hidehira lined people up between Mt. Kinkeisan and the Kitakami River, to carry rocks to the summit to raise the height and bury a pair of golden cockerels.
These have never been found but a bronze sutra container and a large Atsumi kiln vessel have been excavated, showing that it was used as a sutra burial mountain. Sutra burial mountains were to protect Buddha's words until his return. Therefore Mt. Kinkeisan was of great importance to the Buddhist city Hiraizumi. Hidehira also commissioned Muryoko-in and it was designed so that twice a year it aligned with the sunset behind Mt.Kinkeisan. Hiraizumi was developed upon Buddhist belief and wishes for peace passed down from the first generation Fujiwara lord Kiyohira and Mt. Kinkeisan was its symbol.
By the entrance of Mt. Kinkeisan there is a stone pagoda, to mark the graves of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's wife and child. His wife, Sato Gozen was 22 and his daughter was 4 when they lost their lives in the battle of Koromokawa. The two graves stand peacefully side by side at the foot of Mt. Kinkeisan.

【English】All About Hiraizumi #35 Scenery only seen in winter
Broadcasted on January 20th, 2016
Hiraizumi is the place to enjoy various landscapes through seasons.
You could see the impressively beautiful snow scene only at this time of year. We asked Ms. Onodera of Hiraizumi Tourism Association about the best snowscape viewing spots in Hiraizumi.
Speaking of Hiraizumi snowscape, Motsu-ji garden is recommended.
The garden designed according to the precepts of ‘Sakuteiki’, the oldest Japanese treatise on gardening in 11th century, depicts Buddha’s world in this secular world and has survived in almost its original form.
The garden in Motsu-ji is very beautiful at the time of fresh green and autumn leaves, and when snow covers the land, the scenery with the contrast of black and white becomes like an ink wash painting. And when it’s fine, the fantastic wide view with shinning snow can be seen.
How about the weather at Hiraizumi in winter?
We have less snow than usual, but sometimes it is bitterly cold. Please wear warm clothes when visiting here. Although we have mild weather this year, it is very changeable in winter. Please prepare for the bad weather, too.
Not only in the garden at Motsu-ji, but also in Tsukimizaka and the New Konjikido Shelter Hall at Chuson-ji, and Takkoku no Iwaya Bishamondo, you can see the spectacular scenery. Why don’t you come and see these views all together?
