1100 Year Old Jain temple!! | Chitharal Jain Temple | Kanyakumari, Tamil nadu
Chitharal Jain Temple is a famous Jain Temple. It is located in the Marthandam town of kanniyakumari district, Tamilnadu.
Chitharal is historically known as Thirucharanathupalli the abode of Jain monks belonging to Digambara sect.
It is famous for the hillock which has a cave containing rock-cut sculptures of Thirthankaras and attendant deities carved inside and outside dating back to the 9th century.
Jain influence in this region was due to the King Mahendra Verman-I (610-640). It was converted into a Bagavathy Temple in the 13th Century AD.
Chitharal hills are locally called Chokkanthoongi Hills. Now this place is famous for hillock. The temple is a protected monument under Archeological Survey of India (ASI).
Amongst several exquisite rock-cut sculptures found in this cave is the prominent one is an image of Goddess Shri Dharmadevi. The cave was converted into a goddess temple during the 13th century.
Another main attraction at the top hill is two large rocks facing each other, and one can explore whole beauty of the foot through the small window created by these rocks.

A trip to Jain rock cut temple Chitharal I Malaikovil I As We Travel
Chitharal jain temple situated in kanyakumari district Tamilnadu state.Its around 7 km from Marthandam. 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram.
The Jain Temple is situated at the top most peak of the hill, and a flight of carved out rock stared path leads the way.
The climb is definitely a buzzkill but totally worth it once you reach the top.

The Chitharal Jain Monuments are the ruins of a Jain training centre from the 9th century CE, on a small hill in Chitharal village, Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Chitharal is historically known as Thirucharanathupalli – the abode of Jain monks belonging to the Digambara sect. It is famous for the hillock which has a cave containing rock-cut sculptures of Thirthankaras and attendant deities carved inside and outside dating back to the 9th century. Among the rock-cut relief sculptures is a figure of the goddess Dharmadevi.
The Jain influence in this region was due to the Jain Tamil King Mahendra Verman-I (610-640). These temples of Jain Deities' were considered to be built in 9th century AD.

Chitharal Jain Monuments.
The Chitharal Jain Monuments, also known as Chitharal Malai Kovil (literally Temple on the Hill), Chitharal Cave Temple or Bhagwathi Temple, Chitral, are situated on the Thiruchanattu Malai (Thiruchanattu hillocks) near Chitharal village, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, India. Chitharal hills are locally known as Chokkanthoongi Hills. There are two monuments. The earlier rock-cut Jain structure of beads with inscriptions and dripledges is the earliest Jain monument in the southernmost part of India which was from first century BC to sixth century AD. A natural cavern formed by overhanging rock has a bas-relief sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras which were carved in later phase. The relief of Parshwanatha and Padmavati is standing figures canopied by multi-hooded cobra and with attendant figures of Yaksha. The figures seated in ardha-padmasana pose in each niches with three tiered parasol is that of other Tirthankaras (possibly of all 24 Tithankaras). there are three standing figures of Tirthankara in on of the left corner. The central niche has a figure of Mahavira with three tiered parasol, chhatratrayi chaitya with a tree above it and attendant figures.
