Thiru Kolakudi ~ 3 Tier Shiva Temple / Near Pudukkottai
Thiru kolakkudi, which is situated in Pudukkottai district, and also very near to Thirupathur, and Rangium, is well known for its antiquity. Its Lord Shiva temple, under the control of Kundrakudi Athinam. This temple, as like as the other temple of Piran malai, which is also under the control of Kundrakudi Athinam, has three tier structures, namely bottom, middle and upper, in its temple structure.
Here Lord Shiva has been worshiped upon three forms of structures, as well, in three names, named as poiya mozhi Eswarar, Shiva Tharma purishwarar, and kaghola Purisher. There had been a touching, and real incident had taken place at the end of 19th century, related to this temple history, which could bring tears from every one of us.
On those days, there has been a customized system in some temples, that a group of ladies could have practiced system of 'Deva thaasy', which means that, they had been bounded with devotional tie ups with that temple, by having engaged in the temple day today activities, without having got married.
In that family of Deva thasi, one girl named as, Davy was in love with one of the temple guards. Their love grew day by day. Temple car had been designed, and created, and also ready for the temple ceremony. A huge gathering of, people of Thiru kolakudi, and its surrounding were ready for pulling the huge ropes of the temple car, and also attempted in action. But, that gigantic temple car even didn't move a bit.
Then, an old man, who was one among the huge gathering, began to tell the divine saying, which has been assumed, as the words from god, that, in order to move that temple car, one human life might have been sacrificed as the offering. As the old man, said like this, who could come forward, for this type of human sacrifice. Everybody stood still, just remained silent, and waited for the moment, that what could next happen, and whoever could come forward to sacrifice their life.
Amidst the silence, that same old man had noted out, that he preferred one man, for this type of human sacrifice, who had been, none other than the temple's door step guard, who had been also the lover of that deva thasee, Davi.
While having observed these words, from that old man, the temple's door step guard, had accepted whole heartedly, that those words, had come out, from not that old man, instead from the god, as he was a pious devotee of Lord Shiva. He laid down, in front of, one of the huge wheels of that newly made temple car. While people pulled the ropes, with tears rolled down their cheeks, the great man, that is, the doorstep guard had sacrificed his life, that he had been decapitated on the ground.
At once this sad news had reached Davi, she rushed to the spot, where the temple car stood. She climbed in to that car, and from there, she plunged at head straight to the ground, where his divine lover's beheaded body laid down. Both of them had sacrificed their lives for the people of Thiru kolakudi.

Vijayalayacholeswara & Cave Temples, Narthamalai
Narthamalai is 36 km south of Trichy and 17 km north of Pudukottai. There are two cave temples facing east and a later structural temple complex, Vijayalaya Choleswaram, facing the caves. This larger cave is probably one of the largest cave of the Pudukkottai region.Outside large cave temple Sapta Matrukka are located in two congregations. In addition, a dwarapala and a Vinadhara Dakshinamurty can be seen at entrance. Inside the rectangular mukha-mandapa of the cave, there are twelve nearly identical images of Vishnu carved on lateral and back walls. They all are shown standing over a lotus pedestal. There is a mutilated square Shiva-linga base/Pedestal inside the sanctum.A most interesting feature of the cave is seen in the platform of its extended mandapa. A vyala & elephant row above kumudam is one of the most exquisite representation of these mythological animals. There are many kinds of vyalas seen, some with the head of a lion and some with the head of an elephant. Most amazingly there are few vyalas who have shown with a human head. On the south side of the original cave, another cave shrine has been carved out in the rock. This temple is called Paliyili Isvaram. The base of the platform is simple except a gana (dwarf) row above kumudam. These ganas are shown in various actions mostly of dancing. On foundation of this temple is recorded a Pallava inscription of 862 A.D. On the east of the above two cave temples is Vijayalaya Choleswara temple. The temple faces west and has the unusual arrangement of a circular cell (the omkara garbhagriha) within a square prakara. Dome shaped sikhara with a round kalasa on top. Two dvarapalas, five feet tall, guard the entrance. There is an important inscription on its base which gives information about the construction of this temple by a Muttaraiya chief. Round the main temple in the open yard are six survived small sub-shrines built of stone and all facing inwards in a typical early Chola style. Narthamalai is also a place where one could witness the remnants of few rock-cut temples. These temples are perfect examples of the rich temple style of architecture that existed during the ancient era.The entire complex is now an archaeological monument.
Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple/Thiruthuraipoondi/Tamil Nadu
Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple at Thiruthuraipoondi in Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu is dedicated to Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Shiva is worshipped in the temple as Marundeeswarar and Gajasamhara Murthy. Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Periyanayaki.
Why the Shrine is Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple?
A unique aspect of the temple is that Shiva murti faces West. It is said that worship of Shiva here helps in attaining moksha on earth – escape from cycle of birth and death. Self realization dawns on a person and he sheds ignorance. Piravi means birth. Worship here is to put an end to the suffering of birth - life - death - birth.
The temple has subsidiary shrines dedicated to manifestations of Shiva and Mother Goddess. Ganesha and Muruga are also worshipped in the temple.
Thiruthuraipoondi Temple and Ashwini Nakshatra
The temple is also associated with the Ashwini Nakshatra. Those people born in Ashwini Nakshatra offer prayers here to get relief from horoscope related problems. Special pujas are offered here by Ashwnin Nakshatra people.
Story of Thiruthuraipoondi Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple
Legend has it that a demoness got back her husband due to her purity, piety and worship of Shiva and Goddess Parvati at the spot where the temple is located. A demon used to devour people and it was objected by his wife who was different from her kind. Once the demon devoured a boy who was going to the banks of Ganga to perform Shradh and Tarpan (annul rituals dedicated to dead parents and ancestors).
The demoness tried to reason with the demon but he did not listen and devoured the boy. The demon immediately died.
The demoness then prayed to Shiva and Parvati for relief. Goddess Parvati appeared before her and restored her husband and the boy.
The boy wanted to know why his life was restored. Mother Goddess told him that she cannot take the life of a person abruptly when he was heading to perform Shradh with devotion and dedication.
The demoness got the boon that those who offer prayers in the spot where Goddess manifested will be blessed with good husbands. Prayers offered here will also bring about change in the character of bad husbands.

10 day Aani Tirumanjanam in June-July; Margazhi Thiruvadhirai – Tiruvembavai festival 10 days – in December-January are the two great festivals celebrated in the temple. The Aani (June-July) festival is also considered very important. In both the above festivals, Saint Manickavasagar occupies all prominence. Hence, this is considered as a Brahmmotsavam when the saint comes in procession mounted on Vrushab vahan and car-rath. The last Monday of Karthikai month is very special, so Fridays in Aadi-July-August and Tahi month – January-February. Special pujas are offered to Lord on Aani Magam star day in June-July, Shivrathri in February-March, Panguni Uthiram in March-April, Skanda Sashti in October-November, Tirukarthikai in November-December, Navarathri in September-October and Avani Moolam in August-September.
