Ganga river near Muni ki Reti
Muni Ki Reti is a town and a nagar panchayat in Tehri Garhwal district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It lies close to pilgrimage town of Rishikesh, and is most known for a host of ashrams in the area, including the Shri Shivananda Ashram of Swami Sivananda, the founder of Divine Life Society.
Traditionally, the sandy (reti) banks of Ganges River here have been used by munis (sages) and sadhus for tapasya, giving the place it is name Muni ki Reti, literally sands of the sages
Traditionally considered the gateway for the Char Dham pilgrimage — Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
'Kailash Ashram' was established here in 1880, later in 1932, Sivananda Ashram was established here by Swami Sivananda, making it a popular destination for Yoga and Meditation practitioners from all over India, and seekers of Vedantic knowledge. The town became a nagar panchayat on nagar panchayat 30 November 1949. Over the year several others ashrams have come up in the area namely Swargashram, Gita Bhawan, Parmarth Niketan of Swami Chidanand Saraswati and Vanprastha Ashram, all situated on the opposite bank of the Ganges.
In February 1968 The Beatles visited, the now closed Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram, John Lennon, even recorded a song here, titled, 'The Happy Hrishikesh Song' The Beatles composed nearly 48 songs during their time at the Maharishi's ashram, many of which appear on the White Album. Several other artists, including Mike Love of The Beach Boys, Donovan and Gyp Mills, visited the site to contemplate and meditate.
For years boats were the only way to go across the Ganges where numerous ashrams lie, but in the 1986, the building of the 222 ft. 'Ram Jhula', similar to the Laxman Jhula at Rishikesh, allowed easy access to the area, and also its rapid growth.

Rishikesh- Ram Jula Bridge over the Ganga - My North India Tour 19-4-2011
Gayatri-Om Namah Shivaya'' Sung Owned Or Licensed By SAREGAMA
Rishikesh, also spelled Hrishikesh, Rushikesh or Hrushikesh, is a city and a municipal board in Dehradun district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is surrounded by two other districts namely Tehri Garhwal and Pauri Garhwal. It is located in the foothills of the Himalaya in northern India and attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year, from within India, as well as from other countries. Rishikesh is a vegetarian city by law, as well as an alcohol-free city. Rishikesh has also banned use of plastics bags by shopkeepers and vendors.
It is also known as the gateway to the Himalayas and is located around 25 kilometres north of another holy city, Harid Etymology
Hṛṣīkeśa is a name of Vishnu that means 'lord of the senses'. The place gets its name after Lord Vishnu who appeared to 'Raibhya Rishi', as a result of his tapasya (austerities), as Lord Hrishikesh. In Skanda Purana, this area is known as 'Kubjamrak' as Lord Vishnu appeared, under a mango tree. The name Rishikesh is loosely applied to an association of five distinct sections encompassing not only the town but also hamlets and settlements on both sides of the river Ganges. These include Rishikesh itself, the commercial and communication hub; the sprawling suburb Muni-ki-Reti or the sands of the sages; Shivananda Nagar the home of Sivananda Ashram and the Divine Life Society founded by Swami Sivananda, north of Rishikesh; the temple section of Lakshman Jhula, a little further north; and the assorted Ashrams around Swarg Ashram on the east bank. One can reach the famous Neelakanta Maha Deva Temple from here. The Ganga Arati performed at dusk at the Triveni Ghat is popular with visitors. 'Neelkanth Mahadev Temple', situated 12 km from Rishikesh, amidst forest is also a popular local pilgrimage, along with 'Vasishtha Guha', (Cave of sage Vasishtha), 21 km up from the town by the Ganges.
]History
Rishikesh has been a part of the legendary 'Kedarkhand' (the present day Garhwal). Legends state that Lord Rama did penance here for killing Ravana, the demon king of Lanka; and Lakshmana, his younger brother, crossed the river Ganges, at a point, where the present 'Lakshman Jhula' bridge stands today, using a jute rope bridge. The 'Kedar Khand' of Skanda Purana, also mentions the existence of Indrakund at this very point. The jute-rope bridge was replaced by iron-rope suspension bridge in 1889, and after it was washed away in the 1924 floods, it was replaced by a stronger present bridge.
The sacred river Ganges flows through Rishikesh. It is here that the river leaves the Shivalik mountains in the Himalayas and flows out into the plains of northern India. Several temples, ancient as well as new, can be found along the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh.

Rishikesh in 2 minutes, is a short video with the gist of what you can find in Rishikesh. This is one of our favourite places where deep spirituality awakens. Since I have been back to India, Rishikesh seems to be always the first place I visit. It's here were my spiritual path began and it's here where I feel home away from home. Rishikesh is considered the yoga capital of the world, many knowledgeable yogis reside here and share their knowledge. It's a place one should definitely visit when coming to India. If it's not for yoga or other spirituality then one can come for its beauty, its energy, the Ganga, and the singing hippies on the ghats. Best time to visit is October to April. See you there, but if you don't have the time, check out the video for a sneak preview of Holy Rishikesh in 2 minutes. Feel free to share. Thanks to all the people and scenery for making the video.
