Sivasagar Tank, also known as Borpukhuri is a large tank in Sivasagar dug by the Ahoms three centuries ago. It is located in the heart of Sivasagar, Assam, India. The tank is located near the Sivasagar Sivadol, a major landmark of the town. The tank is built on an area of 130 acres (52.6 hectares) and is 64 feet (19.5 metres) deep. This large tank was built by Queen Ambika, wife of King Swargadeo Shiva Singha, in the year 1734 and named it after her husband to commemorate his name. The water level of the tank never changes which highlights the advanced hydrology of the Ahom period. According to historian Mills, the tank was built in one night. The tank is an architectural masterpiece made hundred of years ago. One cannot visually understand that it was made in the absence of any technological support. The tank is also one of the oldest structures in Assam.

The Sivasagar tank was dug by Queen Ambika in 1734, in memory of her husband Swargadeo Sivasingha. The city of Sivasagar thus derives its name from this historic tank. It is the second largest man made lake in Assam after the nearby Joysagar tank.

EPIC Indian Breakfast FOOD TOUR + Ahom Kingdom Historical Sites | Sivasagar, Assam, India
India is a country of wonders. There are beautiful, exciting, and brand-new experiences around every corner. There’s so much to see and do, and each region and state is different from the last. While you’re there, you must visit the northeast region of the country, which is so different from every other part of India. It was a blast to explore!
Follow Afzal on Instagram: instagram.com/arshad_afzaal97
After spending a couple of days exploring Jorhat and nearby Majuli Island, my friend Afzal and I set out on a day trip to Sivasagar, the capital of the Ahom Kingdom for over six centuries! There are lots of monuments and historical sites there and I couldn’t wait to check them out!
We started off at Maar Akhol Restaurant, an ethnic restaurant that’s right across the street from Rang Ghar, an 18th-century sports arena. We would go there later. Now, it was time to eat!
The entire restaurant was built on stilts and made of wood and bamboo. I ordered a Mughlai paratha, which contained chicken, chilies, and egg, and sipped a delicious, milky chai while I waited for my order.
It was cut into four squares and reminded me of an Argentine empanada. I loved the combination of the bread, chicken, spices, and chilies! I tried it with a spicy, green chili sauce. There was so much chicken in it that it was falling apart!
I would have loved some mint or tamarind chutney with it, but it was still a phenomenal breakfast. It only cost 100 rupees/roughly $1.43 U.S., while my friends’ aloo parathas cost 60 rupees/about $0.86 U.S. each.
I took some amazing mouth fresheners before we left and headed over to Rang Ghar. It costs 300 rupees/$4.29 U.S. for foreigners to enter and only 25 rupees/$0.36 U.S. for Indian residents.
The Rang Ghar is a royal pavilion where the king and other spectators would watch bird and animal fights and cultural programs. It was Asia’s first amphitheater and was built by the Ahom king Pramatta Singha.
It’s beautiful! It reminded me of some of the royal tombs I saw in Delhi. We saw where the king would watch the bullfights from and then headed upstairs. It’s more of a viewing point than an arena and is made out of mud bricks. The architecture is stunning!
Then we headed to eat again! We rode through the town and arrived at Chaulung, which sells sweets and baked goods. I ordered a potato samosa, an onion pakora, and more chai!
I loved the onion in the pakora. It reminded me of a blooming onion! The samosa was lightly fried and doughy on the inside. I loved the spices in it! I tried some chili sauce on it, but it wasn’t that hot. My total was only 20 rupees!
There were lots of vendors selling jewelry, clothing, and other items. I got some gold bangles for my wife for 7500 rupees/roughly $107 U.S. each. Then we stopped by the Sivasagar Sivadol, the biggest Shiva temple in all of Asia at 104 feet high. It’s also the oldest and was built in 1730.
A man there put some tikka on my forehead and tied a wristband around my wrist. I tipped him for blessing me and giving me the wristband and rang the bells inside the temple. You bow as you pass through the doorway to the Shiva linga, where people make offerings with flowers, fruit, and milk. You have to be careful because there are a lot of pigeons there, but visiting the linga is such a beautiful cultural experience. Experiences like this is why I love travel.
Outside, we saw lit candles, which are offerings to the gods for more wishes, which differs from Catholicism, where you make a prayer to someone who has passed. Behind the temple is a huge pond called Joysagar Pukhri, which is said to have been dug in one night and filled with water.
There are ducks and geese there as well as vendors and a nice viewpoint where you can look out over the lake. It’s beautiful, but unfortunately, there was also a lot of garbage around the shores.
Then we headed out to look for some sweets! We found some at the Rasraj Hotel, where we got a confection that Sivasagar is famous for and more chai. It’s a super dense bar with chocolate, milk, and jaggery and reminded me of a Colombian dessert. It was delicious!
I hope you enjoyed my tour of Sivasagar! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel!

Shivsagar Pukhuri || The Sivasagar Pond || Jeth 1655 to Bohag 1656 || Shivasagar || Assam
Shivasagar Pukhuri
The Sivasagar pond is one of the most remarkable ponds in Assam. The digging operation of this pond was started in the Assamese month jeth in 1655 and it was completed on 6th of Bohag in 1656. The area of land of the pond is 194 pura, 2bighas, 2kathas and 2losas. There are many huge water streams in between these temples and the Sivasagar pond. Many of them have been swept over by piles of sands. The streams had good link with the pond water.
The banks of this pond were variously named. They are still alive. The Eastern bank is known as Serakapara, the western as Kathpar, the northern as Jairapar and the southern bank is known as Dhuliapar.
There is much information about the name Serakapara ,. According to the first available information, the people of the Ranuwa khel, namely the people related to warfare used to live by this bank. So it was called Saurapar. Later this turned out to be Serakapar. According to another information one thousand people under the leadership of Barpatra Gohain named Seraka used to live here, so it got the name Serakapar. According to the third information, it got the name from an Ahom official named Seraka Barua. Any way it is significant that Jaduram Deka Barua, the first Assamese lexicographer and Maniram Dewan, the freedom fighter had been the Maujadars of this Serakapar.
The northern bank of the Sivasagar pond is Jairapar. The people of the Chutia community that Swargadeo Dihingia Raja made captives in war were founded here. ‘Ra’ in the Ahom language referred to the Chutia people.
The western bank of this pond is called Kathpar. The Kaith people from west of Assam were brought and founded here-so it got the name K athpar. In spoken language, the Kayastha people were called Kaith.
Dhuliapar is the name of third bank of Sivasagar pond. The royal drummers and such like people used to live here and, so it got the name Dhuliapa.

Sivasagar Sivadol (meaning the temple of the Lord Shiva) is a group of structures comprising three Hindu temples of Sivadol, Vishnudol (meaning temple of the Lord Vishnu) and Devidol (meaning temple of the Goddess Durga) shrines, and a museum. These are located on the banks of the Sivasagar (the ocean of the god Shiva) tank, also known as the Borpukhuri tank, in the heart of Sivasagar, in the Indian state of Assam. The tank was constructed between 1731 and 1738 and the temples were built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, queen of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha. The height of the Sivadol (dol means temple in Assamese) is 104 feet (32 m) and the perimeter is 195 feet (59 m) at the base. It is crowned with an 8-foot (2.4 m) high golden-dome. The Sivadol or Shiva temple, built in the Shikhara architecture, has a central tower which is said to be the tallest Shiva temple tower in India at a height of 104 feet (32 m). The Shikhara or Vimana (temple tower), which rises above the sanctum sanctorum, has a four-tiered, 8 feet (2.4 m) mastaka and is crowned by a kalasha made of gold. Top 9 historical place in sivsagar , Assam , India (part A)
Talatal Ghar, Sivasagar
The Talatal Ghar or the Rangpur Palace is situated in the northern region of Assam and is one of the most impressive of Tai Ahom architecture. Not only does it stand as a worthy testament to the vibrant Assamese culture and its rich history, but it is also the largest of all Ahom monuments in the entire world. History buffs and architecture lovers should add Talatal Ghar to their go-to list.
Boasting of a typical Mughal architecture style, the upper ground floor of the Talatal Ghar is popularly known as Kareng Ghar and was used by as a live-in palace by the royalty of Assam. Raja Swargdeo Rudra Singha, the successor of Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha, added these top floors during his regime making the Talatal Ghar an elegant and truly spectacular seven-story royal palace.
An interesting fact about this stunning monument is it has been built with purely organic materials - bricks and organic cement (a mixture of rice powder and duck eggs).
Rang Ghar, Sivsagar
Often referred to as the 'Colosseum of the East', Rang Ghar is one of the oldest surviving amphitheaters of Asia. It is located near Rangpur Palace at a distance of 3 km from Sibsagar town. The name translates to 'House of Entertainment' and dates back to 1746 A.D. when the Ahoms used to rule present-day Assam. This monument is an important edifice reflecting the architectural precision and grandeur of that time.
Originally, the two-storied building was built by Ahom ruler Swargadeo Pramatta Singha to be used by Ahom kings and nobles for witnessing sports like buffalo fights and other sports held at the adjoining Rupahi Pathar. It served as a royal sports pavilion particularly during the Rangauli Bihu festival of Rangpur.
Owing to such rich historical importance, Rang Ghar was used as a logo for the 33rd National Games held in Assam in 2007. Presently, the condition of this monument is fragile. Frequent earthquakes and seismic surveys have caused at least 35 noticeable cracks on the walls.
Ahom Museum, Sivasagar
It is on the banks of Sibsagar Lake and displays artefacts such as royal armoury, clothes, manuscripts, etc which belonged to the rulers of the Ahom dynasty.
Charaideo, Sivasagar
Located 28 km away from Sibsagar, this was the capital of Ahom dynasty. This was built by Sukhapa, the founder of the Ahom dynasty. The main attraction of Charaideo is its burial vaults (or maidans) of the king and members of the Ahom dynasty.
Shivadol, Sivasagar
This famous Shiva Temple is located on the shores of the Sibsagar Lake and was constructed in 1734. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Shivadol was built by Bar Raja Ambika, queen of Ahom King Swargadeo Siba Singha.
It is the tallest Shiva temple in India with a height of about 32 m and base perimeter of 59 m.

Sivasagar, formerly known as Rangpur, was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom from 1699 to 1788. The Ahoms ruled Assam for six centuries, until their kingdom fell to the Burmese in 1819 and their ruling class was all but wiped out.
Sivasagar Tank, also known as Borpukhuri is a large tank in Sivasagar dug by the Ahoms in the 18th century. It is located in the heart of Sivasagar, Assam, India. The tank is located near the Sivasagar Sivadol, a major landmark of the town. The tank is built on an area of 130 acres (52.6 hectares) and is 64 feet (19.5 metres) deep. This large tank was built by Queen Ambika , consort of Shiva Singha, in the year 1734. The tank is an architectural masterpiece made hundred of years ago. One cannot visually understand that it was made in the absence of any technological support. The tank is also one of the oldest structures in Assam.
