A Camping Adventure, Six Foot Track and Jenolan New South Wales Australia
A little video video a recent camping trip along the iconic Six Foot Track to Jenolan.
The Six Foot Track and Kanangra Walls with Sydney Adventure Riders
30 bikes from all makes and models set off from Richmond, NSW, with the aim to ride The Six Foot Track and end up at Kanangra Walls.
On the way, we detoured through my current-favourite practise track, Burralow Creek and Patterson Range Fire Trail. After The Six Foot Track, the group then stopped at Jenolan Caves.
I didn't stop for lunch, so I suspect I might be the only rider who actually made it to Kanangra Walls. It was worth it.
Enjoy the ride!
The Six Foot Track - Blue Mountains
So for the last 3 days I've walked across the Blue Mountains, from Katoomba to the Jenolan caves, along the Six Foot Track! It was an amazing journey and a true Adventure! With some amazing moments, from waking up with Kangaroo outside my tent and some epic views, to hard parts with blisters, caused by accenting over 2000meters and walking over 45km (28miles).
The walk started from the Explores Tree in Katoomba and finishes in the tourist settlement of Jenolan Caves. The route was the original route used by house and carts to take people to the show caves, however with the increase of cars the route was replaced by roads and fell out of use. Now the main users are hikes and runners.
The walk took me three days, however so people walk it in two and some run the whole route in a day. There is even an 100km runner which involves running it there and back, with a bit extra, crazy!
For more information visit these website:
And for the bus ride back to Katoomba, you can buy your ticket from Trolley Bus. Its $45 for an Adult and $40 for concession ticket, for the one way journey, but what can you do without public transport to Jenolan Caves. Buy your ticket by calling them or visiting there shop in Katoomba, opposite the train station on the Bathurst Road.
Last points you can buy a really great book by Matt McClelland called Six Foot Track, which was a great help for me on my walk and always pick up a personal locating beacon (PLB) for the Police station for peace of mind and safety of course.

Six Foot Track Blue Mountains NSW Australia March 2010
We walked the six foot track from the explorers tree in Katoomba to Jenolan caves between the 19th and 21st of March 2010.
Great weather, a little hot on day 2 about 30c. Night time got down to about 12c.
Slept in my Claytor Jungle Hammock both nights. Great sleep!
Took the trolly tours bus home.
Great walk, Day 2 was hard, especially in the heat.
Water tanks were pretty full at all camp sites. Cox's river is pretty shallow but good for a swim.
Wildwalks has a great information sheet on the walk.

Hiking Through Australia's Blue & Snowy Mountains in New South Wales
The sixth largest country in the world, Australia is an incredibly diverse and beautiful land, famous for its natural wonders, wide open spaces, beaches, deserts, and the outback.
On its South Eastern edge, you’ll find New South Wales—Australia’s most populous state, and home to the vibrant, ocean-side city of Sydney. It also happens to be an outdoor adventure traveller's paradise, with a surprising number of breathtaking National Parks, lush rain forest and dramatic mountain ranges, including Australia’s highest peak and the spectacular canyons of the Blue Mountains.
In this episode of Trackin' Dirt, we tackle climbing Mount Kosciuszko in a blizzard and hike and rappel from some epic canyons in the Blue Mountains—I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed being there!

Australia - Jenolan Caves Part 1
Awesome natural cave formations. What I consider a must see area in Australia.
For Part 2 see this link:
Very peaceful and tranquil. Stay still long enough and the small wild life will surprise you when you least expect it. We had just missed the little Platypus when we got there... all we saw were little air bubbles as it swam away. :)
My favourite site was the River Walk, very relaxing and quiet. Lots of various cave tours and natural formations to see. You can also go spelunking on some of the tighter cave tours or take a leisurely stroll around the area, exploring on your own.
enjoy.
Rob
PS. Thanks to our terrific Aussie friends, Dave Simmons for letting us know about the area and taking us up there ! and Sandi & Tony Whalan for filling us in on the history of the area.
(Tony is related to one of the original explorers who found the Jenolan area. The lan in the last part of the name Whalan is used in the naming of the area: Jeno-lan.)

Part 1 of 2
Part 2 will take a look at inside some of the Caves and rock formations.
We stayed at the Mountain Lodge for a couple nights - but in hindsight we should have spent at least another day there. There is a lot to see and do. Here is the link to the accommodations:

Brief History of the area see the following link:
For thousands of years, the Jenolan area has been part of the culture of local indigenous peoples. The area holds significance to the Gundungurra people, who knew it as 'Binomil' or 'Bin-oo-mur'. In approximately 1835-40 the area was recorded for the first time by either James, Charles or Alf Whalan, three brothers who each claimed to have discovered the caves while searching for a bushranger, James McKeown, whom they claimed used the caves as a hide-out.
The caves, then known as the Fish River Caves, came under New South Wales Government control in 1866, becoming only the second area in the world reserved for the purpose of conservation and the following year Jeremiah Wilson was appointed as the first Keeper of the Caves. Wilson not only explored the already known Elder and Lucas Caves but later discovered the Imperial, Left Imperial (now known as Chifley), Jersey and Jubilee Caves.
The caves were open to tourism early, but there was little protection from visitors damaging formations until souveniring was banned in 1872. In 1884 the name Jenolan Caves was adopted. The name Jenolan comes from the Gundungurra word, Genowlan, for a high place shaped like a foot.
