El Andalus Park in Cairo, Egypt; A Walk by El Zamalek Island
El Andalus Park, Cairo, Egypt - One of the rare green areas that people could come across in Cairo and which is considered different because the walk in it will provide a view to some Egyptian attractions and at the same time will be a walk along the Nile.
The Andalusian garden or park in Cairo (حديقة الأندلس) is a little park that is located in the Southern part of El Zamalek island, in between Qasr El Nile bridge and Sixth of October bridge. This little park is just minutes away from downtown Cairo, which could be a place to hide away from the hassle of the street after your walk through the streets of downtown and after getting in contact with some of the historical museums and attractions.
The island of Zamalek is considered one of the districts with vast green areas, unlike the rest of Cairo in general, and which are mostly located in the southern part due to the fact of hosting three different sporting clubs there. The green views found on this island are considered the reason why most of the Egyptians love walking through its streets and even consider it a fancy place to hang out in.
This is considered a recommended green area to spend some time in - just try to stay away from weekends though - because it gives the visitor the chance to enjoy several views, such as the statue of Sa'ad Zaghloul, the Nationalist leader of the 1930s, as well as other famous landmarks of the city that include Cairo Tower, Cairo Opera house, as well as having a good view of the Nile (
There are terraces and different Pharaonic replicas in the garden which covers 8,400 square meters and which was found by Zulfugar Pasha as a present to his wife - a good gesture that it could be the place to have a walk with your other half.
Walking through the greenery walkways of El Andalus park or even choosing to sit on one of the benches to observe the quiet atmosphere of the Nile, it is important to mention that after all, this park will take you away from the traffic jams and let you free your mind a little bit.
There are different cafes and restaurants which you could then go to in the same island of Zamalek or else cross the Nile to the other side, in order to have your lunch or dinner or even get something to drink with the Nile view - and trust us when we say that it is actually a good suggestion and the weather will always keep you happy.
The park is not all done in the same style, but it is divided into three different sections: the first one is all about the narrow walkways with different trees and several replicas of ancient Egyptian statues, the two round terraces which are found at the edge of the park and which are different from the narrow passages, and finally the palm trees which surround the streets and at the same time pave the walkways.
The second part is done in an Andalusian style on a higher level than the first part and is more of a symmetrical nature. In this section there is a central fountain that dominates the area with a statue of Ahmed Shawky in the middle, the Egyptian artist who was known as the poet of Islam and Arabism.
The third and last part of this park is known as Al Fardus and which is decorated and designed in an Arabesque design and architecture and is considered the part from which the one could get the best view of the Nile.
Being one of the places that Cairo residents love and enjoy going to, we should mention that it definitely is a different place to visit although it is not related to the historical museums or the famous landmarks that any tourist always plant to visit before leaving Egypt.
Visiting El Andalus park is not considered expensive because the entrance fee for the whole place costs two Egyptian pounds only, might be a little bit more for foreigners. The place is not open 24/7 but there are working hours available; it opens its gates in summer from 9 AM until 2 and in winter it opens from 9 AM until 10 PM.
Since El Andalus park is too close from the downtown area, there are different museums to visit. From the recommended options, you could visit the Egyptian museum ( go to the Islamic Art museum ( walk through the streets of downtown ( and you could also visit Cairo Tower which is found in the same area of El Zamalek Island ( without the need to cross the Nile over and reach the downtown area.
Cairo might not be rich with green areas but you could always find some gardens and parks which the government takes much care of, such as El Andalus park. There are still other options when it comes to the parks, such as Al Azhar park which is much bigger than El Andalus one and which is also just minutes drive away from old Egypt and could give you a good view of old buildings and treasures (

Egypt Clashes Turn Deadly As Troops Open Fire
At least 30 people in Egypt have died in fierce clashes between supporters and opponents of deposed president Mohamed Morsi.
Supporters of the former leader marched to the Cairo barracks of the Republican Guard chanting down with military rule after a Muslim Brotherhood rally at the city's Rabea al Adaweya mosque.
Shots were fired as protesters hung pictures of Mr Morsi on a barbed wire barrier around the military complex. At least three demonstrators were shot by the military.
Downtown Cairo witnessed the same street battles played out two-and-a-half years ago, this time with Morsi supporters fighting their enemies with rocks, clubs and fireworks. One person was killed in their clashes.
A pro-Morsi crowd crossed the Sixth Of October bridge heading towards Tahrir Square, provoking a fierce confrontation.
The Egyptian army said troops were responding only with blank rounds and tear gas.

El Andalus Park Egypt - A Beautiful Green Space in Cairo
El Andalus Park, Cairo, Egypt - is a green space found on El Zamalek Island that welcomes the visitors to have a walk by the Nile, sitting on the bench to watch the Nile, or have a walk through the green surroundings.
Speaking of Cairo, those who got the chance to visit this city surely know that the green areas found in it are very rare, making the person fall in love whenever they come across a beautiful garden, just like El Andalus park (
El Andalus park is found in the southern part of Zamalek island, which is considered one of the districts in Cairo with the most green areas to be found, since this southern part happens to be the homeland of three different sporting clubs as well. The place where El Andalus park is found is in Gezira between Qasr El Nile bridge and Sixth of October bridge - which are two famous ones in Cairo, very close to the downtown area.
From our personal point of view, we believe that this park is beautiful for so many different reasons; first, it lets you sit and walk in a green area which at the same time happens to be by the Nile ( Second, it is divided into three different parts that give it a different atmosphere. Third, it overlooks different famous landmarks of Cairo, giving the tourists the chance to view them and take some pictures.
The three different parts of El Andalus park in Cairo include the first one which is all about the narrow passages and the different trees surrounding those passages along with some ancient replicas of Egyptian statues. It is also the part or section in which you will find the round terraces at the edge of the park as well as the palm trees that cover the place and even the paved walkways.
The second section in the park is the one that is designed in a more Andalusian way than the first one and also in a more symmetrical way that is found on a higher level. This section is also the place for the central fountain that is dominated with a statue of Ahmed Shawky, the famous Egyptian artist who was born in 1868.
The third and last part or section is the one that is named Al Fardus and is designed in an arabesque architecture, and this is the part that the visitors could get the best views of the Nile from.
This park is only minutes away from downtown area ( so you could come and take your breath if you were visiting some of the important destinations in this area, such as the Egyptian Museum ( the Islamic Art Museum ( or getting more introduced to the streets of the downtown area in general.
On the other hand, this park gives the visitor the chance to view the Nile, and he/she could cross over and choose one of the different restaurants found there, it also gives that visitor a view of Cairo Tower ( which he/she could visit afterwards (but better if done during the sunset), as well as the Cairo Opera House, which are both found on the same island of Zamalek.
The island of Zamalek is considered one of the fancy areas that Egyptian people love to hang out in because they will choose a restaurant or cafe by the Nile or else get the chance to choose one in the inside streets but still manage to walk by some old buildings and through green areas.
El Andalus park was built by Zulfugar Pasha in 1929 as a gift to his wife and it covers an area of 8,400 meters square; this shows us how much love could actually lead people to bring huge gifts! This is also a gesture that this park is considered a good chosen place for couples to have a walk by the Nile there and enjoy their time.
El Andalus park working hours differ from summer to winter; in summer it opens its gates at 9 AM and closes at 2 AM, while in winter it opens at 9 AM but closes its doors at 10 PM. The entrance fee for this place is not expensive at all, it only costs two Egyptian pounds, but which might now be a little bit more due to the economic problems that the country is passing by.
There are different beautiful attractions in Cairo that people could visit, such as the Great Pyramids of Giza ( going to the Pharaonic Village to get introduced to the way the Pharaohs used to live ( visiting the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization ( or even going to check the area of Old Egypt that is related to El Moez street ( Khan El Khalili ( and El Azhar area.
Even if your country is filled with green areas, it is always considered good to see how the other ones tend to enjoy nature, so when you visit Egypt, you could come to El Andalus park if you have some time to enjoy nature and free your mind.

Egypt Clashes Turn Deadly As Troops Open Fire
Fierce street battles between supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and their opponents leave at least 30 people dead.
However, anti-Morsi youths showed Sky News what their enemies had done to them, brandishing used shotgun cartridges and pellet wounds.
They are terrorists and we should get rid of them, they said. They're using automatic weapons and shotguns.
The atmosphere was febrile. Changing in a second. Turning from triumphant to panicked, as the crowd scattered thinking their attackers had returned.
The Muslim Brotherhood is coming here beating us shooting us, said one man. We're here, we're alone and we need someone to help us.
As if to answer him, military armoured personnel carriers appeared from the gloom.
But this isn't a conflict against foreign invaders, it's between Egyptians.
The anti-Morsi crowd screamed curses against the ousted president venting their fury, and relief then turned against us, the Sky News crew, mistaking us for Americans.
A hurried explanation gave us time to escape.
There are now two armies of protesters on the streets of Cairo - enraged and out for vengeance, determined to prevail.
Violence also erupted in cities of southern Egypt, along the Suez Canal and in the Nile Delta, with officials reporting more than 200 people injured. Four were killed in the northern Sinai city of el Arish, where Islamists stormed a government building.
State TV quoted the country's health ministry saying 30 people had died nationwide, including 12 people in clashes in Alexandria. Most of the fatalities were from gunshot wounds.
It came after the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies called for protesters to take to the streets on the Muslim day of prayer for what it described as a Friday of Rage.
The leader of the Brotherhood called for followers to remain peaceful but he vowed to restore power to Mr Morsi, who was ousted in a military coup earlier this week, a year after being elected to office.

Teargas and stone throwing as protesters who called for the reinstatement of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Mursi, clashed with police.
Most of the scuffles happened near or on Cairo's Sixth of October Bridge over the Nile. It's not clear what triggered the violence but it's the first such outbreak in Egypt in a week.
The army warned demonstrators they would act with the utmost severity if they approached military bases, but the patience of the protesters seems to be running thin.
If our demands are not met by Friday we will escalate the situation by occupying the airport, said one protester.
We will not leave the streets even if they kill us we will stay until legitimacy and full rights are restored to President Mursi, added another.
The clashes came as the first senior US diplomat met with Egypt's interim president and prime minister.

What's the World's Longest Bridge?
The world's longest bridge is the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge in China, part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The bridge, which opened in June 2011, spans 102.4 miles (165 kilometers). Another part of that train line, the 70.8-mile (114-km) long Langfang–Qingxian viaduct, is the second longest bridge in the world.
China constructed the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge in just 4 years, employing 10,000 workers, at a cost of about $8.5 million. It crosses low rice paddies, part of the Yangtze River Delta, with just a few miles of the bridge actually crossing the open water of Yangcheng Lake in Suzhou. The bridge averages about 100 feet (31 meters) off the ground.

The world's longest road bridge is the 34-mile (55-km) long Bang Na expressway in Thailand, a six-lane elevated highway that crosses only a bit of water, the Bang Pakong River. Constructing the massive bridge required more than 1,800,000 cubic meters of concrete.
The world's longest continuous bridge over water is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in southern Louisiana. The causeway is actually two parallel bridges, with the longer of the two measuring 23.83 miles (38 km). The bridges are supported by 9,500 concrete pilings.
Louisiana's famous bridge faced a challenger in 2011, when China claimed that its Jiaozhou Bay Bridge was the longest spanning water. Guinness World Records decided to split the title into two parts, stating that the 26.4-mile (42.5-km) long Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is the longest bridge over water in aggregate, while the Pontchartrain is the longest continuous bridge. In Jiaozhou, land bridges and sea tunnels make up parts of the overall structure.

SUMMARY
=======
The Nile (Arabic: النيل) is a major north-flowing river in northeastern Africa, and is commonly regarded as the longest river in the world, though some sources cite the Amazon River as the longest. The Nile, which is 6,853 km (4,258 miles) long, is an international river as its drainage basin covers eleven countries, namely, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Republic of the Sudan and Egypt. In particular, the Nile is the primary water source of Egypt and Sudan. The river Nile has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile. The White Nile is considered to be the headwaters and primary stream of the Nile itself. The Blue Nile, however, is the source of most of the water and silt. The White Nile is longer and rises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa, with the most distant source still undetermined but located in either Rwanda or Burundi. It flows north through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and South Sudan. The Blue Nile begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia and flows into Sudan from the southeast. The two rivers meet just north of the Sudanese capital of Khartoum. The northern section of the river flows north almost entirely through the Sudanese desert to Egypt, then ends in a large delta and flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Egyptian civilization and Sudanese kingdoms have depended on the river since ancient times. Most of the population and cities of Egypt lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan, and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along riverbanks.
