It's another lovely day for us in Cumbria, so we make the most of it and head to the beautiful Sizergh Castle. We stroll around the picturesque gardens and then venture inside the 800 year old castle which is still home to the originally family even today!
We also pop on over to Low Sizergh Barn to look around the farm shop, pat some cows and get some RAW milk - from a vending machine!!

History & Haunting of: Sizergh Castle , Helsington, Cumbria ,England.
Helsington’s landscape is one of contrasts. Extensive woodland lay along the banks of the River Kent in the east and in the south, where Sizergh Castle sat ‘in the midst of fertile grounds,
beautifully sprinkled with wood’.
Sizergh Castle Cumbria
In the care of the National Trust since 1950, this place holds a remarkable history of a family being able to keep the title of the property from 1239. Former owners fought for King and country, being strong supporters of the Yorkists during the Wars of the Roses. Yet the haunting here is more of a poltergeist nature. On one occassion the floorboards were torn up, only to be ripped out again when they were replaced
Sizergh has been associated with the Strickland family since 1239, when the heiress Elizabeth Deincourt married William de Stirkeland. The solar tower of the castle was a potent symbol of the Stricklands power during the Middle Ages, when they played a leading role in the wars with Scotland and France. Prominent as Catholic royalists throughout the 17th century, the Stricklands went into exile in 1688 with the court of James II at Saint-Germain in France. They returned to Sizergh by the early 18th Century as impoverished Jacobites, but thanks to the careful efforts of Winifred, Lady Strickland, they were able to afford a few baroque-style alterations to the house. Sir Gerald Strickland, later Lord Strickland of Sizergh (1861-1940) along with his second wife Margaret Hulton, installed the famous rock garden which was laid out in 1926-8. In 1931 the estate transferred to Lord Strickland's daughter Mary and her husband Henry Hornyold. They and their son Lt-Cdr Thomas Hornyold-Strickland gave the house to the National Trust in 1950.

National Trust, Kendal.

Kendal Castle, Kendal, Cumbria, UK - 5th September, 2012
Kendal Castle is situated on a mound-like hill, known as a drumlin, to the east of the town of Kendal, Cumbria, in northern England. The castle was probably built in the late 12th century as the home of the Lancaster family who were Barons of Kendal. The best known family associated with the castle was the Parr family; including Queen Catherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry VIII of England. Her family had lived at Kendal since her ancestor Sir William Parr married the heiress of Kendal, Elizabeth Ros, during the reign of Edward III of England. By the time Catherine Parr was born, the family had long deserted the castle which was already falling into disrepair. Catherine's father preferred to live in the centre of court in London. Sir Thomas's father seems to be the last of the Parrs to have lived at Kendal Castle. The building has been a ruin since Tudor times but imposing stonework remains are still present.
This video features views of the castle from the top of the drumlin, as well as extensive views over the town of Kendal and the surrounding Cumbrian countryside and Lake District National Park.

Sizergh Castle and Gardens
Nestled in the middle of a 1,600 acre estate is the imposing house of Sizergh Castle. The house is stilled lived in by the Stickland family and contains many portraits from across the centuries.
The gardens are spectacular and include organic garden, orchards, semi-natural woodland and a large pond with a beautiful pair of swans if you time it just right!

Kendal, anciently known as Kirkby in Kendal or Kirkby Kendal, is a market town and civil parish within the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, England. Historically in Westmorland, Kendal is situated about 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Windermere, 19 miles (31 km) north of Lancaster, 23 miles (37 km) north-east of Barrow-in-Furness and 38 miles (61 km) north-west of Skipton. The town of Kendal lies in the valley or dale of the River Kent, from which it derives its name
Kendal today is known largely as a centre for tourism, as the home of Kendal mint cake, and as a producer of pipe tobacco and tobacco snuff. Its buildings, mostly constructed with the local grey limestone, have earned it the nickname Grey Auld Town. Kendal stands on the River Kent, surrounded by low hills. Kendal is near (but not in) the Lake District National Park. When the National Park was formed in 1951 the boundary was deliberately shaped to exclude Kendal. Although a relatively small town, Kendal is an important commercial centre for a wide area thanks to its rural location. Kendal is affectionately referred to as The Gateway to The Lakes.
Kendal railway station is situated on the Windermere Branch Line and gives connections to Windermere railway station to the north, and Oxenholme Lake District railway station (on the West Coast Main Line) and Lancaster railway station to the south. Kendal is around 8 miles (12 km) from the M6 motorway, and is bypassed on the west by the A591 road, linking it to Windermere, Keswick and the A590 leading to Barrow, as well as being the terminus of the A65 road to Kirkby Lonsdale, Skipton and Yorkshire and a destination on the A6 road to Penrith. The Lancaster Canal was built as far as Kendal in 1819, but the northern section was rendered unnavigable by the construction of the M6.
