Skaftafell est un parc national situé en Islande. Ce site est facile d'accès et très fréquenté.
A l'entrée du parc, il y a un centre d'information où vous pouvez obtenir des renseignements sur les activités proposées. Il y a plusieurs panneaux très intéressants qui présentent des informations historiques ainsi que des photos.
On y retrouve également un terrain de camping, une cafétéria et un petit supermarché.
Il existe plusieurs sentiers de randonnée.
Le sentier le plus court est de 3,7 km aller-retour et le temps requis pour cette randonnée se situe entre 60 et 75 minutes.
La randonnée la plus longue a un parcours de 29,8 km aller-retour et le temps de marche se situe entre 8 et 10 heures.
Nous avons opté pour le sentier S2 (niveau facile) d'une longueur de 5,5 km et d'une durée de 2 heures qui comporte les intérêts suivants: la cascade Svartifoss, le point de vue Sjónarsker et les maisons aux toits de tourbe de Sel.
Le sentier débute par une longue pente ascendante assez raide qui nous semble être une éternité. Pour un sentier de débutant, on repassera pour la facilité... Nous nous demandions même si nous avions pris le bon trajet.
Au sommet de cette colline, on poursuit notre route sur un sentier balisé jusqu'à la hauteur de la cascade Svartifoss et on descend un escalier pour nous rendre au pied de celle-ci.
La cascade Svartifoss est située dans un environnement vraiment exceptionnel. Des orgues basaltiques se sont formés par le refroidissement lent d'une coulée de lave et, avec le temps, l'eau a brisé cette couche de lave.
Un petit pont a été érigé au-dessus de la rivière pour nous permettre de rejoindre l'autre rive et un escalier nous amène à mi-hauteur de la colline.
Par la suite, de grosses roches parsèment le sentier jusqu'au sommet.. qui d'ailleurs n'est pas encore le sommet à atteindre.
On poursuit notre route sur un sentier plutôt plat jusqu'à une autre pente assez abrupte pour nous rendre au point de vue Sjónarsker.
A cet endroit, il y a une table d'orientation et nous avons droit à une splendide vue des montagnes, des étendues de sable, du glacier et de l'océan.
Le sentier continue vers des contrées lointaines, mais en ce qui nous concerne, nous rebroussons chemin pour nous diriger cette fois vers les habitations traditionnelles de Sel.
Ces bâtiments aux toits de tourbe datent de 1912 et ils ont été habités jusqu'en 1946. Ils ont été depuis restaurés par le Musée National.
C'est l'endroit idéal pour prendre une pause car le paysage est majestueux. De plus, des chevaux islandais vous approchent et vous pouvez les nourrir très facilement.
Sur le trajet du retour, nous découvrons Hundafoss qui est une autre belle cascade. Son nom signifie cascade des chiens car autrefois le chemin de la ferme passait par le bord de cette cascade. Les chiens étaient parfois emportés par la crue soudaine des eaux.
Par la suite, le sentier traverse le terrain de camping qui d'ailleurs nous semble être vraiment bien, et nous amène directement au centre d'information, notre point de départ.

Skaftafell national park. Iceland, 2001 - was a national park, situated between Kirkjubæjarklaustur, typically referred to as Klaustur, and Höfn in the south of Iceland. On 7 June 2008, it became a part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park.

Iceland is an amazing place. We spent our time driving around Iceland's Ring Road while we were there. One of the places we camped overnight in was Skaftafell National Park. Imagine camping right next to a glacier, that was exactly our experience while camping there. The view was amazing. We did a glacier hike with mountainguide from the park.

Trail S1: to Skaftafellsjökull glacier.
This trail starts next to Skaftafell Visitor Centre and is well indicated. It is paved half the way, while the latter half has a fairly comfortable gravel surface. The trail ends in close proximity of Skaftafellsjökull glacier and you will get a good view of this impressive glacier. Those who wish get closer can do so but are encouraged to follow instructions on a warning sign at the trail's end. When heading back to the visitor centre it is possible to take an alternative route by turning left on the crossroads that you arrived at some 300 m before the end point (well indicated with signs).

Trek : Svartifoss - Sjónarsker - Sel in Skaftafell natural park
The trail starts next to Skaftafell Visitor Centre and is well indicated. The first 250 meters go through the campground but the trail then turns right and uphill. Follow the signs until you arrive at a viewpoint above the waterfall (140 m ascent in 1.5 km). Continue down into the ravine, across the footbridge, and climb up the basalt column steps on the other side of the ravine. Continue on this trail to the viewpoint at Sjónarnípa, then head back towards the old turf house at Sel and then back to the visitor centre via Lambhagi.

Another waterfall! This time we're in the Vatnajökull National Park. The hike to Svartifoss takes almost 1.5 hours round, but it was worth it! We also finally got to eat and can you believe that I found a veggie burger at a gas station in Iceland?!

Iceland'10 Skaftafell National Park
Svartifoss and Skaftafell Iceland
Svartifoss is one of the unique waterfalls in South-Iceland. It is situated in Skaftafell, which belongs to Vatnajökull National park. Skaftafell is a true oasis after driving through the vast black lava sand plains of Skeiðarársandur glacial outwash.
When I got to hike Skaftafell, I got goose bumps when I seen the mountains in a distance as you approach the national park. Skaftafell national park has been my favourite spot in Iceland for many years. However because of its location it hasn't gained as much popularity as other places in Iceland. The national park is located at the South East Coast of Iceland at the roots of Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe. It's difficult to describe the beauty of the area in words, but the scenery in Skaftafell is like no other; here you'll find stunning glaciers, black beaches and some of the highest peaks of Iceland.

To take advantage of white night, I started hiking at midnight and finished 8am in the morning while my family sleeping. I slept only 2 hours that day but wasn't tired somehow.
The trailhead is at the Skaftafell national park visitor center.
All the trails in Iceland are well marked with wooden sticks and easy to follow. You will see some wooden sticks in the video including at the summit.
It was 20 Km (12.5 miles) with 1142 m (3750 ft) elevation gain.
The trail map is here. It's S3 + S4.
S4 is more awesome than S3 but not recommended for the faint of heart.
