In Skerries, a small coastal town 30km north of Dublin City, there are two windmills and a watermill. This unique collection of mills is one of Ireland’s foremost tourist attractions and industrial heritage centres. Guided tours are available daily and are a must on your list of things to do while in Dublin.
The story of stone-ground milling in Skerries can be traced to the early 16th century when the lands belonged to the Priory of Holmpatrick, an Augustinian monastic foundation.
Milling continued in Skerries until the early years of the 20th century and a bakery which existed by 1840, was producing breads and confectionery until the mid 1980’s.
Following a ten year restoration project undertaken by the Fingal County Council, FÁS and the local community, the centre is open to the public throughout the year. The mills with associated mill pond, mill races and wet lands are now a focal point for Skerries Town Park and the site commands wonderful views of the coast and off-shore islands.
Visitors begin their guided tour of the site in the four storey watermill building, they can try their skills at grinding, observe the waterwheel at work and walk through the corn field to visit one of the windmills. The watermill also houses the Watermill Café, an award winning craft shop and an exhibition space which can be accessed independently.
Last tour takes place one hour before closing time.
Facilities include, guided tours, watermill café with in-house baking and cooking, craft shop, exhibition area, ample free parking, literature available in Irish, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Skerries Mills
In the town of Skerries on Ireland's east coast, a water mill and two windmills operated for centuries to grind wheat, barley, and oats. A museum now keeps these fine examples of pre-industrial technology available for public visiting (there is also a rather good cafe and a gift shop). This little video gives a small glimpse of what we saw on the 50-minute tour, conducted by an extremely knowledgeable and informative guide.

Skerries is a coastal town in Fingal, Ireland. Historically Skerries was an active fishing port and later a major centre of hand embroidery, but in the 20th century, it became both a resort and a dormitory town for Dublin commuters.
Skerries is on gently sloping land approaching the coast, which is partly overlooked by low bluffs. There are hills around, including Mill Hill, where a windmill has long been sited. The town has five islands off its coast called Shenick Island, St Patrick's, Colt and the island formation of Rockabill, which comprises The Cow and The Calf,[2] separated by a narrow channel. There is also Red Island, which is a tied island.
The town itself is built around two long streets - Strand Street and Church Street, and between the surrounding hills and beaches. Skerries South Strand is a long sandy beach (2.5 km long). Red Island, Mill Hill, Hillside, the nearby Ardgillan Park and Demesne, Barnageera and to a lesser extent Baldungan Castle, provide vantages overlooking the town.
Rockabill has the largest numbers of breeding roseate terns in Europe. It is also the farthest set of islands from the town and has a lighthouse which is exactly 4 miles from the nearest path on the mainland at Red Island. The Martello tower on Shenick Island is one of a number of defensive towers erected during the Napoleonic era along the Irish coast by the British. The tower is situated exactly 1 mile from the great windmill and approximately 1 mile from both the Monument on Strand Street and the other Martello tower on Red Island. This forms an almost perfect arc through the major tall secular structures in the town with the Martello tower on Shenick at the centre. Shenick Island is accessible on foot at the lowest tides, but this is inadvisable, due to the relatively rapid fill caused by the turning tide. The other islands are harder to reach, but it is possible by boat. St Patrick's Island is so called because this is where the Irish patron saint is reputed to have landed and begun his mission to convert the country to Christianity.
