Chasing Chilean Chutes - Portillo and Ski Arpa

During the middle of August, I had the wonderful opportunity to break up the off season and get some summer turns. After doing the usual tourist attractions in Santiago, we dove in head first at Ski Arpa, a small cat skiing operation in the Andes Mountains. At Ski Arpa we were able to shred powder and corn snow all day in the shadow of Aconcagua. Immediately after, we drove to Portillo where we spent the remainder of the week. One of the coolest things about Portillo is the incredible backcountry couloirs nearby. Access can range from 20 minute hikes to 3-4 hour ski mountaineering excursions. During my time in Portillo, I had the opportunity to hit La Chimney, Candelabra Couloir and the famous Super C. For those who don’t know, Super C is a 4520 foot couloir, beginning at 13,100 feet on the summit ridge of Ojos De Agua. I ended up skiing this one twice, first going with a group of friends from the year before, then with an instructor/guide named Ben Brosseau, who I know from Big Sky. In this edit, you can watch these long descents unfold, beginning with Super C and Candelabra, then transitioning to fast powder shredding at Ski Arpa. Enjoy the show! #steepskiing
