The Sunkar International Ski Jumping Complex (Международный комплекс лыжных трамплинов) is located in micro district of Gorny Gigant in the southern part of the city at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level in a unique place where there is almost no wind.
The complex was built in 2010 on the site of the old ski jumping complex with 5,500 seating capacity. It consists of five ski-jumps: K125, K95, and the training ramps K60, K40 and K20. Both artificial turf and snow can be used in every season. The complex also features a permanent multifunctional building with stands for 5,500 seats, a media press centre, a hotel, snowmaking and irrigation systems, a chairlift and underground car park, track and finish area for Nordic Combined, and a helipad.

Ski Jumping Mixed Team - 28th Winter Universiade 2017, Almaty, Kazakhstan
Almaty - February 4 - Heavy snowfall did not prevent ski jumpers from participating in mixed competition
1 Gold: Haruka Iwasa, Naoki Nakamura (Japan) – 445.1
2 Silver: Marta Krepelkova, Cestmir Kozisek (Czech Republic) – 434.9
3 Bronze: Yuka Kobayashi, Max Koga (Japan) – 430.6
The staff of the Sunkar International Ski Jumping Complex had to prepare for the competition in advance. Heavy snowfall did not subside during the tournament. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the athletes could demonstrate their abilities and cheer the crowds. Haruka Iwasa and Naoki Nakamura from Japan have shown their determination to win from the very start. It is the second gold medal of Haruki Iwasa at this year’s Universiade. The second place went to Marta Krepelkova and Cestmir Kozisek from the Czech Republic. Yuka Kobayashi and Max Koga from Japan took the bronze. In the latter two pairs, women demonstrated a higher results compared to their partners.
Max Koga, the bronze medal winner, told about his struggle during the competition.
“My results are not that good. Yuka’s two attempts were perfect, so we could get the bronze as a result,” he said.

- I am immensely happy. This is a major competition and I have won my first medal.
- We learned that you are of a Canadian descent. Tell us about it.
- It’s true. I am half-Japan, half-Canadian. That is why I am cheering for both teams at this Universiade.

Almaty - Russia’s ‘flying skiers’ won the gold medal at the 2017-Universiade.
1. Russia – 789.9
2. Slovenia – 783.8
3. Poland – 761.8
The last ski jumping event was held at Sunkar. Despite low temperatures, all participants enjoyed enthusiastic support from fans during the event. No one was sure until the last jump who the winner would be. Quite a few of the flying skiers were able to easily produce jumps longer than 100 meters. After the first attempt Russia took the lead in the team standings. Their next attempts turned out to be even better and that led to the team eventually landing on the top spot on the podium. Slovenia’s Anze Lavtizar, Andraz Modic and Aljaz Vodan finished second slightly lagging behind. This is a first medal for the Slovenians in ski jumping at the 2017-Games. Polish ski jumpers Krzysztof Mietus , Stanislaw Biela and Przemyslaw Kantyka took bronze.

101. “Sunkar” ski ramp complex
It is located from the west side of Yesentay river (Vesnovka) and on the south side of Al-Farabi Avenue. The complex consists of a group of ski-ramps, viewing stands, administrative building, judges’ boxes, funicular, 3 stop stations, and maintenance stations. There are only a few sport complexes of that kind in the world. The complex has 2 ski-ramps of 125 and 95 meters. They are connected by the common outrun, that goes around the amphitheater and sits more than 5,000 people and 400 standing places. The other three ski-ramps K-60, K-40, and K-20 are designed to train young sportsmen.
The ski-ramp of Almaty meets the highest requirements of FIS, the International Federation of ski sport. The ramp is suitable for having serious competitions. Currently it is considered to be one the ten worlds’ best ski-ramps. There was a new type of material to cover the ski-ramp. This material meets the latest requirements of FIS. The ski-ramp of Almaty is the first in the world using that kind of covering material.

Japanese star Sara Takanashi notched up her 14th victory of the season. She could now equal, then break her own record of 15 wins and 1720 points in a World Cup season.
Ski Jumping originated in the 18th century, back then farmers in the Norwegian province of Telemark used small hills on alpine slopes for short jumps. With time, the interest and the enthusiasm for this new discipline rose and Ski Jumping became a sport of its own. Today Ski Jumping is one of the most popular disciplines in winter sports. Around the world fans gather to watch athletes soar through the air at competitions. At the moment this fascinating sport is practiced in about 20 countries on the World-Cup level. Ski jumping was added to the Olympic winter schedule in 1924.

Baluan Sholak Sports Palace - 28th Winter Universiade, Almaty, Kazakhstan

The palace comprises ice hockey arena and short track arena
Baluan Sholak Sports Palace has a 50-year history and is named after famous Kazakh wrestler, writer and composer Baluan Sholak (1864 – 1919).
At the time of construction in 1967, the palace comprised ice sheet, refrigeration plant room for making synthetic ice, medical room and curriculum office. In 2010, the palace was renovated in accordance with international standards for holding the VII Asian Games.
At the present time the palace holds competitions of continental and world level Olympic sports. In November, 2015 the palace held the Pacific – Asia Curling Championships which served as qualifying competitions for the World Cup 2016 and test event for the Winter Universiade 2017.

Almaty Ski Jumping Venue is ready for the 28th Winter Universiade 2017 - FISU 2016
Almaty - In 2017, Almaty will host the 28th Winter Universiade and therefore the old Goreny Gigant ski jump was replaced by a modern ski jumping facility with two new ski jumping hills K125 and K95. Construction works began in fall 2007 and the new hills could be inaugurated in September 2010. The new jumps are equipped with spectator stands for around 10,000 people and a lift.
