Skiing in Malbun in the tiny European principality of Liechtenstein is like skiing in the days before the sport became a nightmare of package tours and tower blocks and lift queues.

The resort is a tiny one, with only a handful of hotels amongst the private chalets and houses. In fact, it's the kind of place where you feel that you may bump into a young Gregory Peck and Doris Day around the corner. And, although there has been plenty of money spent on new lift equipment, there are still only three ways to get up onto the slopes above Malbun.

The skiing itself is at a healthy altitude of 1600 metres so the snow conditions normally remain pretty good. Even in the warm spring of 2007, the cool of the night and the work of the lift employees enabled the pistes to sparkle like new in the morning sunshine

Malbun is pretty close as the crow flies to the capital of Vaduz (although you could say that about everywhere in Liechtenstein!) but the road up to the resort can be an intimidating one for inexperienced mountain drivers, with steep gradients and sharp corners. Those who feel unnerved by the prospect may wish to take the regular local bus, or to hire a taxi to head up onto the slopes.

Not a place to put the kilometers under your skis. Not a place to give the credit card a workout. But Malbun is the perfect resort for a romantic getaway to remind yourself what a ski vacation was once all about.

And when you return and someone asks you where you went, Skiing in Liechtenstein is a pretty good line!

During our 3 day trip to Liechtenstein, we drove to the Apline town of Malbun to see the mountains and the snow. Our AirBnB host was generous enough to lend us her sleds for the boys, and they had an absolute blast. The snow was a big change for our island babies. We had some hiking plans, but the kids had so much fun sledding and playing in the snow that we decided to adjust our itinerary and relax.

Malbun lies behind the southern Alpine ridge in a small side-valley of the Saminatal Valley. Thanks to its snow-sure slopes, the resort is famous throughout Liechtenstein and beyond.

Originally inhabited only during the summer months, when it was known for its invigorating mountain air, the resort of Malbun was created in the early 1960s with the construction of the first hotels and a chairlift connecting the village with the Sareis ridge at the top of the mountain.

The 1970s saw rapid development, with further hotels being built and new draglifts being installed to serve the improved network of pistes. Soon Malbun was known beyond the borders of Liechtenstein, not least thanks to the sporting success of its Alpine skiing stars.

In recent years the lifts have been updated and a new concept has been developed, including the creation of more slopes. The resort's long-standing commitment to providing services and facilities meeting the needs of families was recognised by the Swiss Tourist Board with its Family Destination Award.
