Kamchatka Ski Tour Part 1 Heli day 1
Where? Kamchatka!
When? April!
What? The different experience! Snow experience at rugged volcanoes!
That was my first ever heli-skiing. Though I spent hours and days flying over all Kamchatka. I've been waiting for this for a long time. It just came as a gift!
And I am sure I want more!
I want to confess that this video is not perfect at all. GoPro Hero 4 without a gimbal is something I woudn't use now. But I was enjoyed making this film, and every emotion of those days awok in me!
That is just a day of 10 days of ski touring, snowmobilling and heli-skiing.
Hopefully very soon I'll edit and download the rest of the adventures!
Kamchatka Part 2 -- Russia's remote sporting beacon
When one thinks of sport in Russia, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan are the obvious heavyweight cities. Few would include Kamchatka as a hub of world-class activity. RT takes up Part 2 of its Kamchatka-in-Focus series.
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky -- the city of St. Peter and St. Paul -- had its golden age of sport last century, while still part of the Soviet Union. Back then, people came for the higher wages, excellent seafood and stories of unrivalled hospitality.
That is why this remote peninsula became the center for Soviet alpine skiing.
Lyudmila Agranovskaya uses her own famous method of teaching alpine skiing to children. She is the first female Snow Leopard -- a title given to mountaineers who reached the summit of the Soviet Union's four 7,000-meter peaks. She has done it seven times over.
But to this day, her passion lies in helping future skiers develop their skills from a young age.
Kamchatka turned out to be the best place for raising alpine skiers. The city has many places for higher education, as well as high schools. Basically, an athlete has all the advantages of a big city, starting from kindergarten all the way to university. They can train and return home the same day, becoming champions in the process, explains Lyudmila.
Back in the day, when Soviet alpine skiers were far more successful than their modern-day counterparts, the Agranovsky club bred champions like Varvara Zelenskaya.
Lyudmila Agranovskaya and her daughter Olga continue to train children and develop their coaching technique.
A shortage of modern training facilities has plagued the region, stalling any new sporting achievements. But new multifunctional Sport Centers hope to make that excuse a thing of the past
Our center is unique to Kamchatka. Professionals and amateur athletes now have a much larger choice of sports. Actually we can hold a competition at any level here from football to boxing and gymnastics, says director of sport center Vladimir Senetov.
Keokushinkai Karate is among the most popular martial arts, after becoming widely available in Kamchatka 20 years ago.
Some who were students then are coaches now, continuing to pass their knowledge to the next generation.
One problem remains though -- the region's remoteness from the main part of Russia prevents athletes acquiring enough competition experience in comparison to other places in the country.
We lack competition experience because it's quite hard and expensive for other clubs and federations to reach Kamchatka and vice versa. But this year we pooled together our resources along with the local sport authorities and will hold a top regional Keokushinkai event. Hopefully we'll have one every year, says Vasily Timofeev, Team Kamchatka Keokushinkai Karate head coach.
Paralympic athletes also hope to compete more. The Russian team continues to impress on the world stage year after year. Many of them come from remote places like the Kamchatka Region.
But sometimes that is where the nations' real treasures are hidden, like the people who devote themselves to helping improve the lives of others.
Natalya Reviakina has been a Paralympic coach since 1996 and has witnessed many changes. What remains constant, though, is her desire to come here every day and push her students to achieve the best results they can.
Government attention to the Paralympic athletes has increased since I first started. I believe it's just one of the reasons Russia's Paralympians are one of the best teams. And I also do my best so that there will be more champions from Kamchatka, notes Natalya.

Kamchatka Part 1 - Sports in the land of volcanoes and bears
Kamchatka Peninsula is eight time zones away from Moscow, famous not only for its volcanoes and bears, but also its supply of Olympic, World and European champions in the past.
Leading a healthy way of life seems a part of everyday existence in Kamchatka. It is blissfully easy to take care of yourself there, whether through playing sport or simply relaxing in a spa.
Following a period of instability and population decline in the aftermath of the break-up of the Soviet Union, the region is slowly but confidently rising from the abyss and the locals want the whole world to experience what it has to offer.
Kamchatka thrives on its fishing industry but tourism remains a hidden gem. Located at the Far Eastern end of Russia, the landscape is similar to Alaska, both beautiful and dangerous at the same time.
Professional snowboarder and entrepreneur Aleksandr Moroz realizes that sport and tourism go hand in hand.
He provides training facilities for Olympians and aims to introduce Kamchatka's rich heritage to tourists both from home and abroad.
His mountain hotel and snowboard camp in the wilderness is an example of how private capital is helping to improve the region's largely untapped tourism market.
Sport and tourism complement each other and it's a fact -- the Olympic Games are a good example. I think there is nothing wrong with businesses profiting from sport, because this way we are ensuring further development of sport. And this is how I came up with the concept of a camp specializing in professional snowboarding for athletes which can also serve as a year round resort for tourists. We are also a home base for Kamchatka's Paralympic alpine skiers. , said Aleksandr Moroz, who is also president of the Kamchatka Snowboard Association.
Kamchatka prides itself on its martial arts legacy as well
Statistics show that almost half of the young people in Kamchatka prefer combat sport to other disciplines -- kickboxing being a favourite. The aim is to develop an interest in sport from a young age.
It is hoped that such activities will encourage youths to fight off temptations such as drugs and alcohol, something that is an issue in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski.
There is really no secret method to approaching youth at any given moment in time. We accept kids as young as six years old and interactive training sessions with elements of play maintain their continuous interest for sports. We all know that children are very active, but we try not to push them too hard before they choose a sport they are really into. Once they make their choice -- in my case it's kickboxing -- I introduce them to more advanced practice options. And that's it, Nikolay Kazansky, kickboxing coach, said.
A new gas pipeline recently launched by President Dmitry Medvedev will help social causes, such as the development of tourism infrastructure, revival of great athletic traditions and supporting the advancement of grassroots sports.
Local authorities know what needs to be done, and that is nurture existing young talent.
Kamchatka is one of the youngest places on earth and, like its volcanoes, it continues to breathe, erupting energy. The force of the next generation is very positive and obviously it's directed to sport. This is the main feature of Kamchatka -- its kind and strong youth that charges everyone's energy levels. Sports like football, snowboarding, Alpine skiing, Kyokushin Karate and many others unite the local population, bringing new creative ideas and of course physical strength, Vladislav Skvortsov, Mayor of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, said.

Polar Route (Arctic Circle) United Boeing 777-200ER Houston - Tokyo Narita
My flight today is UA7 from Houston to Tokyo Narita on my way from São Paulo to Shanghai on N77019, a Boeing 777-200ER delivered to Continental Airlines in 2007. This plane is equipped with two GE90-92B
Thus is a 13h27min flight. Although we flew above some amazing places, this flight was quite tiresome for me because it was the second long-haul flight in a row (GRU-IAH, 10 hours + 5 hours layover), it was a daytime flight and we crossed 15 time zones.
I could only understand hikoki Boeing nana nana nana (seven seven seven seven seven)
The IFE is showing its years
This is my first time on a transpacific flight
After some hours we'll be flying very close to the Arctic Circle.
I'm a big fan of polar routes
I've flown several times above Greenland and Northeastern Canada
(click the card above to see my last flight)
Today it'll be my first time above Yukon (Northwestern Canada),
Alaska and Siberia. The landscapes in those areas are truly amazing.
This is a daylight flight. The crew members asked to close the window shades to allow people to sleep.
Flying over Alberta province in Canada.
We are close to the Yukon, the Westernmost Province of Canada. The Yukon, is wild, mountainous and sparsely populated. Kluane National Park and Reserve includes Mount Logan, Canada’s highest peak, as well as glaciers, trails and the Alsek River. In the far north is Ivvavik National Park, with protected calving grounds for Porcupine caribou. In the south are numerous glacier-fed alpine lakes, including boldly colored Emerald Lake. This place is amazing. It reminds me of Greenland. This is why I'm a big fan of polar flights. The view is extremely relaxing. These places are perfect to see the aurora borealis (northern lights). We are not far from the Arctic Circle.
The sky in Alaska was overcast. I was also extremely tired after more than 24 hours traveling and have to take a nap.
The Bering Strait (Берингов пролив), a strait of the Pacific, which separates Russia and the United States slightly south of the Arctic Circle.
Wales, in Alaska. Wales is a city in the Nome Census Area. At the 2010 census the population was 145, down from 152 in 2000. It is the westernmost city within the mainland United States. The Strait has been the subject of the scientific hypothesis that humans migrated from Asia to North America across a land bridge known as Beringia when lower ocean levels
Can you see the contrails?
Siberia
After crossing the Kamchatka Peninsula, north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, we are now flying over Sakhalin, the largest island of the Russian Federation
Japan
Descending towards Tokyo-Narita Airport
United has many daily flights to Narita from several US cities. I've even seen a United B737-800. United has a fleet of 737s operating from Guam to Japan and other Asian destinations.
United's Guam hub is an important part of their network, offering nonstop flights to and from four cities in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka) as well as to and from Hong Kong and Manila.
Within Micronesia, United offers service to and from nine destinations, including Palau and Saipan.
I wish I could've stayed some days in Japan, but I couldn't change my ticket.
After landing at NRT I had to wait for 4 hours until my next 3 hours and 20 minutes flight to Shanghai in a ANA Boeing 767. At this time I had already been traveling for 29+ hours.
After leaving Houston at around 10:30 am, we landed at Tokyo-Narita at around 2 pm the following day.

Bezymianny Volcano Explodes With Ash Eruption Spewing 17 km High
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, December 20. /TASS/. The Bezymianny volcano in Kamchatka has spewed up ash as high as 17 km above sea level, subsequently sparking a new eruption, the third this year, the Kamchatka Branch of the Geophysical Service at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) told TASS on Wednesday.
Kamchatka, Russia's land of volcanoes
The Bezymianny volcano has belched ash 15-17 km above sea level. A rash of seismic activity was detected on December 18. Hot ash tumbled down the mountain's southeastern slope, the number of volcanic events surged, and steam ejections became more intensive. Bezymianny started a new eruption today, the source said. The ash is being blown in a northeastward direction.
Bezymianny is one of the Earth’s most active volcanoes. It erupted twice in 2017 - once in March and again in June. It is located in the central part of the Klyuchevskaya cluster of volcanoes, 350 km to the northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and 40 km from the villages of Kozyrevsk and Klyuchi in the Kamchatka Region. According to measurements, the volcano is 2,882 meters high.
Ghost ships and miraculous landscapes of Russia's Kamchatka
Bezymianny burst back to life in 1955 after nearly 1,000 years of dormancy, and the first outburst occurred on March 30, 1956. Since then, the volcano has become 200 meters lower. It belched about three cubic kilometers of volcanic products in a short period of time, with its column of ash reaching about 35 km above sea level.
Scientists detected 44 strong explosive eruptions from 1965 to 2012. The volcano has been monitored daily since.
