Kolsky District is an administrative district , one of the six in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. As a municipal division, it is incorporated as Kolsky Municipal District. It is located in the northwest of the oblast, partially lies on the Kola Peninsula, and borders with the Barents Sea in the north and Finland in the west. The area of the district is 27,600 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the town of Kola. Population: 44,670 ; 51,125 ; 73,555 . The population of Kola accounts for 23.4% of the district's total population.

Couloir skiing in Kirovsk, Kola Peninsula, Russia

Skiing down a small & narrow couloir with the soviet architecture of Kirovsk in the background. Really enjoyed the place - there's some great skiing, the resort is modern and the town of Kirovsk has good restaurants. It also presents a unique backdrop to the Khibiny Mountains, which creates a special vibe to the place. There are some awesome couloirs everywhere around the town and next time I go there, I have to bring an ice axe and crampons. There is also another ski area called Kukisvumchorr, 25 minutes from Kirovsk. Like, Kirovsk, it is an old mining town, but this one is really small, ditto for the ski area; it consists of a couple of t-bars, slopes and a base station. Great atmosphere tough and the slopes are steep. Didn't really get a chance to check out the off-piste in this area, unless you count an unofficial forerun of the local FWT qualifier event on the backside of the mountain. The slopes have probably one of the most dramatic vistas I've seen with the open mine pit and factories at the bottom. The area of Kirovsk is definitely worth a visit!
