-- About this video --
In today’s episode, we’re heading to Mt Cook Airport for one of the most unique things to do in New Zealand, land on a glacier in a ski plane in Mt Cook!
We join Inflight Experiences for their Mt Cook ski plane flight which includes about a 30-minute scenic flight over the Aoraki Mt Cook National Park and then landing on the Tasman Glacier. There’s nowhere else in New Zealand (and not that many places in the world) that you can experience landing on a glacier in a ski plane.
This scenic flight in New Zealand is in a small 8-seater ski plane flying to the upper snow fields of the Tasman Glacier in Mt Cook. We then get to enjoy spending about 20 minutes on the Tasman Glacier in the snow surrounded by epic alpine scenery before jumping back on this New Zealand ski plane flight back to Mt Cook Airport.
So what do you think of this ski plane New Zealand flight? Would you add the Mt Cook skiplane to your Mt Cook travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

-- About this video --
Today is our first day in Aoraki Mt Cook! We head straight to the Mt Cook Airport because our first activity in Mt Cook is heli-hiking on the Tasman Glacier!
We join Mt Cook Glacier Guiding who equip us with all the gear, guide and a helicopter and we enjoy a 12 minute scenic flight to the Tasman Glacier. Heli-hiking in Mt Cook is an awesome option for a glacier heli-hike in New Zealand to explore New Zealand’s longest glacier and visit a less crowded glacier.
This New Zealand glacier heli hike takes us across the unusual and magnificent landscape of the Tasman Glacier along with its ice caves, crevasses and more. We spend about 2 hours on the glacier in this glacier heli hike in New Zealand.
So what do you think about this heli hike on the Tasman Glacier? Would you add it to your Mt Cook travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

Flying Over the Tasman Glacier - Mt. Cook/Aoraki - New Zealand
After hanging out atop the Tasman Glacier for a few, we hopped back into the ski plane for the second half of our adventure. We took off of the glacier's cirque, then soared down over the glacier, past Mount Cook /Aoraki (New Zealand's tallest peak!) and Tasman Lake. I especially love the massive crevasses, shattered ice falls and the lacy glacial rivers. It felt like I was on a different planet! (Massive thank you to Mt Cook Ski Planes for our awesome adventure!

What you'll see in The Sky Piercer is quite literally the stuff of legend. Snow athletes Sam Smoothy, Xavier De Le Rue, Nadine Wallner and Fraser McDougall take on the challenge of skiing down New Zealand’s highest mountain, the notorious Mount Cook (Aoraki). Will extreme weather and icy conditions defeat them? Aoraki mightn't be the world's tallest mountain, but it is one of the youngest, and still growing by about 7mm a year, though in the last few decades erosion of the ice cap means it's 30m or so shorter after massive falls of rock and ice. Where it differs from bigger mountains in the Himalayas or European Alps is that it's exposed to whatever westerly weather systems the Tasman Sea throws at it, meaning strong winds, heavy snow, and thick cloud that can make visibility a serious problem, and this goes for the eastern side, too, if the wind changes.
The Sky Piercer director Hancox has mentioned that there has to be an understanding between the protagonists and the crew that cuts both ways, and that The Sky Piercer works so well is a reflection of the mutual respect. The film maker needs to understand that the athlete isn't an actor, Hancox has said in interviews. The athlete also needs to understand that it takes more than just skiing or 'action' to create an engaging film.
