Adam has extensive experience in back country split boarding and has all the gear to set you up for your epic back country adventure. Cheers for the advice Adam and sweet split board set up. Im so hooked now and cant wait to hit it again. Split boarding makes access to the further reaches of the mountains now possible.

Thredbo’s has a dedicated beginner area affectionately known as Friday Flat with a number of carpets and a beginner chairlift to get you learning the ropes. Once you’ve got your turns down the Cruiser area is the ideal place for intermediate riders to skill up, whether on green or blue runs, or in the park. More advanced riders will love moving across the mountain to High Noon and the T-bars of Central Spur before testing themselves on the leg-burner that is Supertrail. Experts hunting for more complex terrain can get stuck into Golf Course Bowl, Bushranger and Michael’s Mistake.
ACCESS THREDBO
Thredbo is approximately a 6 hour drive from Sydney, 7 from Melbourne and 2.5 hours from Canberra. A number of bus and coach companies offer services to Jindabyne and Thredbo, including Snow Alliance, Murrays Coaches, Greyhound and more. There are two options for flying to Thredbo. You can either land in Canberra and use a hire car to get to the hill, or take a REX regional flight to Cooma, which is just over an hour from the resort.
THREDBO ACCOMMODATION
You can either stay in the Thredbo village or 30 minutes down the hill in the town of Jindabyne. Jindabyne offers cheaper accommodation and a greater variety of restaurants and shops, while staying in Thredbo allows easy access to the snow and stunning views of the mountain.
In Thredbo there are lodges, hotels, ski-in ski-out chalets, luxurious apartments and self contained units. The Thredbo Alpine Hotel is well known for its alpine charm and luxury touches like fireplaces and spas, and is situated in the village only a few minutes’ walk from the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift. A more affordable option is the River Inn, just metres from the Gunbarrel Chairlift.
In Jindabyne there are the options of private lodges, apartments, hotels, hostels and a caravan park. Rydges Horizons offers hotel comforts like a bar, restaurant, games room and indoor pool along with views of Lake Jindabyne. Located about halfway up the hill to Thredbo is the beautiful Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa offering chalets and apartments along with plenty of activities like archery, golf and trout fishing.
THREDBO RESTAURANTS & APRES
For on-hill dining there’s Australia’s highest restaurant Eagles Nest, Merritts Mountain House for a casual lunch and drinks, or Kareela Hutte for a truly European alpine experience. In the village you can enjoy a variety of restaurants like Cascades for higher end dining or The Local Pub for a casual bite to eat. Thredbo has a vibrant apres scene with frequent music acts and DJs. Schuss is the place for themed nights and comedy while Keller bar is the place to let loose.

RUNNING MOUNT KOSCIUSZKO #InJust7Days
DAY 6 // MT KOSCIUSZKO // NSW
Why this trail? “Running to the top of Australia. I wanted to experience running the Australian backcountry in the middle of winter.”
Rate it? “Amazing feeling running across the large white valleys as far as you can see. A different Australian experience. Hard going in the shin-deep powder though.”
Location: I used the Mt Kosciuszko Summit Walk Route from Eagles Nest starting at the top of Thredbo Ski Resort (Longer route starting out at Charlottes Pass which I ran last year without the snow)
Access: Easiest to fly to Canberra, grab a rental car and drive 2.5hrs to Thredbo via Cooma (There is a $25 park entrance fee paid at booths at the bottom of the mountain). Grab a single lift pass and head up to Eagles Nest.
Sleep: We made a day trip from Canberra. But there is a range of accommodation options in Thredbo Village or the town at the bottom of range Jindabyne.
Terrain: No track when under snow, so you need to have a navigation option (and a backup if that breaks)
Difficulty: 8/10
***NOTE – if thinking of doing this PLEASE make sure you take the right survival gear, Epirb, know conditions and forecasts or better still get a mountain guide.
