Photos taken during our vacation to Iceland in 2005. The waterfalls (four total) were photographed during this full day journey to Skogafoss. Not sure of the names of the first and second waterfall, however, the third is Seljalaandsfoss is a narrow but high waterfall, plunging over the mountainside of West Eyjafjoll. A path lies at the bottom of the cliff where it cascades down, offering a safe and easy opportunity to walk behind the waterfall. The last waterfall Skogafoss, stands a towering 60m tall. Home to the town of Skogar, Skogafoss is one of Iceland's largest and most impressive waterfalls. See some of my other photographs at jeffreyjonsmith.com.

Skógafoss (pronounced [ˈskou.aˌfɔs]) is a waterfall situated on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. After the coastline had receded seaward (it is now at a distance of about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Skógar), the former sea cliffs remained, parallel to the coast over hundreds of kilometres, creating together with some mountains a clear border between the coastal lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland. Skógafoss es una cascada situada en el recorrido del río Skógá, al sur de Islandia en los acantilados del anterior litoral. Skógafoss is a waterfall found on Iceland’s picturesque South Coast, located close to the village of Skógar, which itself lies south of Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Measuring 60 metres (197 ft) high, with a width of 25 metres (82 ft), Skógafoss is considered a staple stop on sightseeing tours in South Iceland.
The waterfall is located on the Skógá river, approximately 149 kilometres from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. Visitors to Skógafoss can either view the waterfall from the base—they’re able to walk right up to the cascading water!—or from the top, following a steep staircase that trails the waterfall’s side to an observation deck.
According to legend, an ancient treasure chest was hidden behind Skógafoss by one of the area’s earliest settlers, Þrasi Þórólfsson. Since his death in 900 AD, many attempts have been made to locate the chest, with locals even managing to grab a handle from the chest before it broke off.

Skogarfoss is a mighty waterfall that drops 60m, in Skogar, a town in south Iceland with beautiful cliffs, about 1 hour between Reykjavik and Skaftafell, and close to Thorsmork.
Accordingly to the legend, one Viking hide a gold treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. One local boy later found the chest, but it disappeared.
The landscape here is peaceful and very beautiful.
The waterfall, the cliffs, the coast and the mountains are all within walking distance from the town.
