Skoklosters Slott (Sweden) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Skoklosters Slott in Stockholm.
On the shores of Lake Mälaren, north of Stockholm and close to Uppsala, is one of Europe's best-conserved Baroque castles, Skokloster Castle, situated on a scenic peninsula. It is a highly visible, bright white, three storey, four-wing building with massive corner towers, which are like giant, domed lanterns. In 1611, Baltic cavalry officer, Herman Wrangel, acquired the estate and he eventually passed it on to his son, Carl Gustaf. Earl Carl Gustaf Wrangel was both Lord High Admiral and Field Marshal of Sweden. He was richly rewarded by the king for his services in the Thirty Years' War. On the first floor of the castle are the sumptuous private rooms of the family. The earl’s bedroom was one of the most important rooms. Wrangel was inspired by French fashion, stucco and valuable tapestries. His successor and son-in-law, Earl Magnus Brahe, also appreciated fine art and created a commemorative room, with a statue of Mars, the Roman god of war. Skokloster Castle is the remarkable legacy of an aristocratic family and its impressive lifestyle.

Waldemar Januszczak Visits - Skokloster Castle
Sunday Times Art Critic, Waldemar Januszczak, takes us on a tour of the impressive Skokloster Castle in Sweden. We doubt you will have ever seen a castle like it!
An introduction to Skokloster Castle
Castle Skokloster outside Sigtuna Sweden in 4K
The castle was built in the Baroque style between 1654 and 1676 by the wealthy military commander count Carl Gustaf Wrangel on a peninsula of Lake Mälaren between Stockholm and Uppsala. It was designed mainly by architect Caspar Vogel.
The castle is a monument to the Swedish Age of Greatness, a period in the middle of the 17th century when Sweden expanded to become one of the major powers in Europe. The death of Wrangel in 1676 meant that the castle was never truly completed. The Brahe family who inherited the castle after Wrangel's death, had their own family castles and did not complete the interiors. Thus a large banqueting hall remains largely in the same condition as the builders left it in the summer of 1676. It is now called the Unfinished Hall. Skokloster Castle is the only building in Europe with a complete 17th-century building site of equal authenticity. Alongside the Unfinished Hall there are a number of other related items from the same period, as several hundred tools and about a dozen books on construction

The Castle & collections
Take a step back in history and into the Great Times
Skokloster Castle is the largest private palace ever built in Sweden. The architecture, the intact interiors and the exquisite objects make the castle one of Europe's premier baroque castle.
History
The farm is famous since the 1100s. The present castle was built 1654-1676 by Count and Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Wrangel during the most flourishing period of the Swedish superpower.
The drawings of the castle were mainly prepared by German architect Caspar Vogel, and were further processed by Jean de la Vallée, Mathias Spieler and Nicodemus Tessin, etc. The castle is built in Baroque style.
However, the castle never came to be completed without the construction stopped when the construction worker Wrangel died in 1676.
When the wrangel's death came to the workers at the castle, they immediately put down the work because they suspected that wages would be lost. Neither the planned facilities against the water and the magnificent gardens were completed.
A fideic committee
After the death of Carl Gustaf Wrangel, ownership of the Brahe family passed away when Wrangel's daughter Margareta Juliana married the National Council and the Admiral of Nils Brahe Dy in 1699. At his death in 1699, widow Margareta Juliana instituted a fide commission for the son-General Major Count Abraham Brahe (1669-1728 ). Skokloster was then in the family of Brahe's possession until its empire expired in 1930.
Then the castle passed through inheritance to the family of von Essen.
In 1967, Skokloster Castle was bought with the approximately 50,000 inventories of the Swedish state.
The castle became a state-of-the-art museum and is today included in the state-owned state museums.
Collections
In the collections, magnificent practical objects and trivial things are combined. In the extensive collections there are a variety of furniture, handicrafts, textiles, weapons and books from the 17th century. In addition, there are objects from the castle's later owners in the 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. Better than most places we know who have manufactured, used and admired the well-preserved décor and the objects.
At Skokloster there are three weapon collections; the Wrangelska, Braheska and Bielkeska. Throughout the years, the owners have collected art, textiles, handicrafts, books and ceramics from the period 1550 to 1850.
The banquet hall, which would become one of Northern Europe's largest, was never completed. It was left as the construction site it was; complete with tools and building stands that can still be considered on site.
When the state took over the castle, extensive renovations were initiated under the guidance of architect Ove Hidemark. During the restoration, old craft traditions were used, and the handbooks Wrangel left behind were utilized. The castle is now building memory.

Skokloster church is a church building in Skokloster parish and parish, Håbo pastorate, Håbo härad in Uppland. It is located 4 kilometers north of Enköping, 4.5 kilometers south of Uppsala, 2 kilometers northwest of Sigtuna. The sock occupies most of the Peninsula in the northern part of Håbo municipality and belongs to Uppsala stift.
A nearby Romanesque church at Flasta was built in the first half of the 11th century. When Cistercian Nunnels from Byarum Monastery in Smaland came to Uppland in the 1230s, it was here to Flasta that they first arrived and probably left their contemporary homes in connection with the old church church.
The new church in Shoe was probably started in the mid 1200's, and the high altar was inaugurated in the 1280s. In connection with this (maybe 1288?), Probably the nuns in Flasta Church moved over here. The church was planned with six-part arches of the same type as in Lund Cathedral, but was crowned with ribs of crossroads only after a fire at the end of the 13th century. At the same time, stretcher piles were added to the north and south, of which traces are visible on the north outer wall. The Sakristian was established north of the choir, and the current stretches of the West End were built. After completion of the work, the church was reinvented in 1300.
At the end of the 1400s, major construction work was undertaken, including the rebuilding and lowering of the southern side ship's vault, and on top of that a vaulted walk was built into a western part of the church. In 1503 the monastery was ravaged by a fire and new construction work was begun again; However, the monastery buildings were never completely completed.
After the Reformation, the Church fell due, until Herman Wrangel paid a renovation 1620-1624. The outer roof was made flatter, the southern side ship was converted into a magazine and a rider was built to the west. The altar set and the pulpit belonged to the monastery church in Oliwa, Poland, but were donated to the church of Skokloster by Carl Gustaf Wrangel of Salmis (1613-1676) in 1674. The rooftop rover was removed in the 1730s, when the sterns to the north were added and the northern side ceilings were lowered .
A restoration of 1893-1894 under the direction of Emil Langlet, architect, included that the facades were freed from the 18th and 18th century white glue, new entrances were taken to the south and the southern side skirt's upper floor was removed. In addition, the floor was laid in the middle of the longhouse, the bench blocks received wood floors and ornamental paintings on arches and arcades.
The church building
The church, located on Skofjärden's beach at Skokloster Castle, is one of the most important monuments of Mälardalen's brick churches. It was established as a monastery church for cistercian nuns, but also served as a church church. The monastery buildings are now completely destroyed. At an altitude of about one kilometer northwest of the church lies the ruin after an elder predecessor, the so-called Flasta Wall or Flasta Church Garden, a Romanesque church with a narrower, absidered choir and a West tower.
Skokloster church is a wooded basilica in brick, with straight cows of the same width as the middle ship. On the south side of the choir lies the Wrangelian burial cemetery, which was probably completed in 1639. Sakristian is secondarily housed in the eastern part of the northern side ship. The entrance of the church is located in the west. Right next to the southwestern corner of the church stands a bell tower, built in 1743.
