North Macedonia,[c] officially the Republic of North Macedonia,[d] is a country in the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of the successor states of Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in September 1991 under the name Republic of Macedonia. A landlocked country, North Macedonia has borders with Kosovo[e] to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west.[8] It constitutes approximately the northern third of the larger geographical region of Macedonia, and is defined primarily by mountains, valleys, and rivers. The capital and largest city, Skopje, is home to roughly a quarter of the nation's 2.06 million inhabitants. The majority of the residents are ethnic Macedonians, a South Slavic people. Albanians form a significant minority at around 25%, followed by Turks, Romani, Serbs, Bosniaks, and Aromanians.
The history of the region dates back to antiquity, beginning with the kingdom of Paeonia, presumably a mixed Thraco-Illyrian polity.[9] In the late sixth century BC, the area was incorporated into the Persian Achaemenid Empire, then annexed by the kingdom of Macedonia in the fourth century BC. The Romans conquered the region in the second century BC and made it part of the much larger province of Macedonia. Τhe area remained part of the Byzantine Empire, but was often raided and settled by Slavic tribes beginning in the sixth century of the Christian era. Following centuries of contention between the Bulgarian, Byzantine, and Serbian Empire, it was part of the Ottoman dominion from the mid-14th until the early 20th century, when following the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913, the modern territory of North Macedonia came under Serbian rule.
During the First World War (1915–1918) it was ruled by Bulgaria, but after the end of the war, it returned under Serbian rule as part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Later, during the Second World War (1941–1944), it was ruled by Bulgaria again, and in 1945 it was established as a constituent state of communist Yugoslavia, which it remained until its peaceful secession in 1991. The country became a member of the United Nations in April 1993, but as a result of a dispute with Greece over the name Macedonia, it was admitted under the provisional description the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia[f] (abbreviated as FYR Macedonia and FYROM). In June 2018, Macedonia and Greece resolved the conflict with an agreement that the country should rename itself Republic of North Macedonia. This renaming came into effect in February 2019.

Macedonia Proposes Geographical Name Change to End 25-Year Dispute with Greece
What's in a name? Apparently, a reason to disagree, especially if the name is Macedonia. Greece has long been at odds with the Republic of Macedonia for using the name of one of its great ancient kingdoms. It is a long, unresolved dispute that carries huge geopolitical consequences for Europe. VOA's Jane Bojadzievski explains.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Skopje (, US also ; Macedonian: Скопје [ˈskɔpjɛ] (listen), Albanian: Shkup) is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. It is the country's political, cultural, economic, and academic center.
The territory of Skopje has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC; remains of Neolithic settlements have been found within the old Kale Fortress that overlooks the modern city centre. Originally a Paeonian city, Scupi became the capital of Dardania in the second century BC. On the eve of the 1st century AD, the settlement was seized by the Romans and became a military camp. When the Roman Empire was divided into eastern and western halves in 395 AD, Scupi came under Byzantine rule from Constantinople. During much of the early medieval period, the town was contested between the Byzantines and the Bulgarian Empire, whose capital it was between 972 and 992.
From 1282, the town was part of the Serbian Empire and acted as its capital city from 1346 to 1371. In 1392, Skopje was conquered by the Ottoman Turks who called it Üsküb, with this name also being in use in English for a time. The town stayed under Ottoman control for over 500 years, serving as the capital of pashasanjak of Üsküp and later the Vilayet of Kosovo. At that time the city was famous for its oriental architecture. In 1912, it was annexed by the Kingdom of Serbia during the Balkan Wars. During the First World War the city was seized by the Kingdom of Bulgaria, and after this war, it became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Yugoslavia becoming the capital of the Vardarska banovina. In the Second World War the city was again captured by Bulgaria and in 1944 became the capital of SR Macedonia, then a federated state of Yugoslavia. The city developed rapidly, but this trend was interrupted in 1963 when it was hit by a disastrous earthquake.
Skopje is located on the upper course of the Vardar River, and is located on a major north-south Balkan route between Belgrade and Athens. It is a center for metal-processing, chemical, timber, textile, leather, and printing industries. Industrial development of the city has been accompanied by development of the trade, logistics, and banking sectors, as well as an emphasis on the fields of transportation, culture and sport. According to the last official count from 2002, Skopje had a population of 506,926 inhabitants; according to official estimates, the city ...
ID-Bate: an imaginary dialogue on Macedonian issue
ID-Bate is a short film concerning national identity issues and the project Skopje 2014 (below read more about the urban project).
Shooted in Skopje for the Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival 2011 entitled Who's afraid of the Big Bad Crises?
About the project Skopje 2014: The project marks the political ascendancy of Nikola Gruevski and the VMRO-DPMNE political party. Gruevski's administration has launched the Skopje 2014 project which aims to give a more monumental appearance to the capital, and made plans to erect several statues (including Alexander's the Great statue in the central square), fountains, bridges, and museums at a cost of about €500 million.
The project has generated controversy: critics have described the new landmark buildings as signs of a reactionary historicist aesthetics, it has been criticised for its cost and for the lack of representation of national minorities in the coverage of its set of statues and memorials, it is accused for turning Skopje to a theme park (Las Vegas effect), it is viewed as nationalistic kitsch, and has made Skopje an example to see how national identities are constructed and how this construction is mirrored in the urban space.

Buy a day and spend, the other side of the Skopje metropolis. Children beggars (not) visible to the state
11.11.2018 | TV 24
In the baroque gown of the Skopje metropolis, hundreds of sad fates are hiding under the glare of massive monuments, bridges, boulevards. In the center of the city, and yet hidden from the public's eyes, they live as tramps. Today they are here, tomorrow who knows where they will be.
Where we find there we go. An empty space, where we find it, we will pop up, says Senat, the oldest member of the family.
Senat lives on the Vardar quay in the city center. In a makeshift shed he lives with a dozen members of his family. Their family business is the plastic bottles that they collect all over the city. The youngest ones also help on collecting plastic bottles.
Now I came from the bins, here behind the wheelbarrow, I went to search maybe I find something so I can cook for the kids to eat, what can we do, we have nowhere to go, says Suzana, the daughter-in-law of Senat.
The children don’t go to school, although some of them, so far, had to start. That’s why they are waiting with special joy Friday to come - the day when they visit the Children's Embassy, which they experience as a school.
Children that come to our organization is the smalest thing that a civil organization can do to solve the problem of children on the street, which every day are from 500 to 2000 in the whole country. Simply they are forced to earn because none of the family members work and they live in substandard conditions , says Dragi Zmijanac, president and founder of the First Children's Embassy in the World Megjashi.
For forced begging and exploitation of child labor, his wife was convicted, although Senat claims that she is not guilty. The child still lives with them. Social services say they visited this family and offered them accommodation in Chichino Selo, but they refused. Senat considers that it is a dangerous place for his daughters.
Housing, chances for employment, education and health were the key spheres on which Macedonia committed herself to work to improve the lives of Roma comunity and their integration into society. But, research of the effects of the famous Roma Decade are disappointing . They show that in fact, in the last ten years, almost nothing has changed.
From the Ombudsman's office, they alarmed that for real changes, they need money, and they say that the strategy for integration of the Roma comunity has been done for the most part with projects with foreign donations, and for real changes, a lot of work should be done, emphasized from the Children's Embassy Megjashi too.
Employment of one of the family members, involving children in preschool and primary school and a roof over their head – only like that we can fight child poverty, fight illiteracy and abuse of child labor - says Zmijanac.
From the Ministry of Social Affairs assure that child poverty is the number one priority and that they have prepared a thorough reform of the social system and child care.
They announce higher social assistance, employment of vulnerable and higher child allowances. In the meantime, the results are vigilantly awaited and the international factor that has repeatedly stated that the protection of the hungry people is key for opening the doors to the EU. Until then, we will peep through the keyhole.
