- Sky Arrow - Dan Johnson gives us a quick look at the Sky Arrow, light sport aircraft from Hansen Air Group during the E.A.A. Airventure Sport Aviation Convention held at the Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh Wisconsin.
Sky Arrow Certification
The Sky Arrow 650 TCN was type certified in March 1996 in Italy and in October 1997 in U.S.A. The TCN version is in compliance with FAR 23, Amendment 42 requirements, as listed in FAA Advisory Circular AC-23.11 dated December 02, 1992. The engine is certified to FAR 33 and the propeller to FAR 35. Noise has been tested in accordance with FAR 36, Appendix G, and ICAO Annex 16, Chapter 10.
The Sky Arrow 650 TCN is type certified for day and night VFR in the U.S.A. and those countries that recognize Advisory Circular AC-23.11. They are used for recreation, sport, training and aerial reconnaissance. In the UK, they are also certified in the Transport Category (passenger). The aircraft, due to its tandem configuration, is also usable for military initial training. For this reason pneumatic gyroscopic instruments, with the relevant engine drive and pump, are part of the standard configuration. Due to the possibility to be used in night operations, navigation, strobe, landing, cabin and map lights are installed, as well as an additional alternator.
Fuselage
The fuselage is almost entirely made of carbon fiber sandwich in an epoxy resin matrix. Kevlar is used in some areas, such as the cabin, where added strength is requested for crash worthiness. The two fuselage halves are bonded together along the vertical plane.
Internally, the fuselage includes six minor bulkheads and two main ones. One of these bulkheads supports the main landing gear and the engine. The aircraft may be controlled from either seat.
The front rudder pedals are adjustable. A baggage compartment is located behind the back seat, and small bags can be stowed underneath it. The fuel tank is located in the fuselage, behind this seat.
The one-piece, glider-style canopy provides exceptional outside visibility. The engine and fuel tank attachments have been statically tested in crash landing simulations up to 18 g's.
Wings
The airfoil is a Gottinga 398 modified for better handling at low speeds. Each wing is attached to the fuselage with 3 bolts (two at the root rib and one at the wing strut) secured by castle nuts and easily removable safety pins.
The wing and the control surfaces are made of carbon fiber. The two wing spars are of C section. Wing flaps are actuated electrically and can be positioned at 0, 10, 20 and 30 degrees. The ailerons are actuated via aluminum control rods and bellcranks.
Landing Gear
The tricycle landing gear is fixed. The main landing gear leaf springs are made of fiberglass roving. The nose gear strut is steel and carbon fiber. It features a donut type shock absorber and a shimmy damper. The nose gear is free castoring. Steering is provided by a combination of hand-operated differential braking of the main wheels (low speed) and rudder actuation (high speed).
Powerplant
The engine is a Rotax 912F, certified to FAR 33, with a maximum power of 81 HP at 5,800 rpm. The engine is a horizontally opposed, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke type. It features liquid cooled cylinder heads and air cooled cylinders, dual ignition, dry sump lubrication, dual carburetors and a propeller drive reduction gear box with clutch. The engine features one internal and one external alternator. The engine mount is made of aircraft steel tubing. The propeller is 2 blade, fixed pitch, certified to FAR 35.
Empennage
The rudder is made of fiberglass sandwich with a termanto core. It is actuated by dual cables and aluminum rod via a bellcrank. Both the horizontal stabilizer and elevator are in carbon fiber sandwich, in an epoxy resin matrix, with an electrical actuated trim tab. Aluminum control rods actuate the elevator.
Electrical
Electric power is provided by a twelve-volt battery located in the nose of the airplane and is supplied to the electrical system via a bus. An external 40-amp alternator, driven by a belt connected to the propeller shaft, provides power to the battery and the main electrical bus. A second 18-amp internal alternator provides power to the engine ignition system and also serves as a source of emergency power in the vent of a malfunction of the primary alternator.

Skyleader's UL 39 Albi L 39 Knockoff
At Aero 2016 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, a company called Skyleader was showing a wild scale knockoff of an L-39 Albatross called the UL-39 Albi. It's equipped with a 13-blade ducted fan powered by a BMW motorcycle engine. AVweb shot this video on this unique airplane.

BIOGRAPHY OF REAR ADMIRAL CHARLES ROSENDAHL & U.S. NAVY DIRIGIBLE, AIRSHIP & BLIMP FLEET 46514
This episode of the 1954 TV series The Greatest Drama, “The Sky Giant: The Story of Rear Admiral Charles A. Rosendahl,” tells the story of Rosendahl and his championing of dirigibles. The episode opens with a shot of a dirigible (00:29) and a shot of Rosendahl (00:41), a “giant of aviation” and pioneer of dirigible flight. Rosendahl is part of the flights of famous U.S. dirigibles, including the Shenandoah (00:45), the Akron, the Los Angeles. Cadets march at Annapolis (01:01), where Rosendahl’s interest in dirigibles begins. An early dirigible leaves its hanger then flies over ocean-going ships. The film shows the construction of a dirigible (01:26) and a stockpile of the gas cannisters (01:43) used to power the ships. Rosendahl flies the German-built Los Angeles (02:10) to Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. He takes part in several other flights. He is the Navigation Officer of the Shenandoah (02:48) when the ship encounters a storm and breaks in half—Rosendahl successfully lands the bow section of the destroyed ship, saving a handful of lives. Footage shows the wreckage of the ship (03:08). Rosendahl (3:25) is given command of the Los Angeles (03:31) and its crew. A shot from the dirigible shows an aerial view of an East Coast city (03:46). As part of the PR flight, Rosendahl launches a glider (04:00) from the dirigible, which then lands. A more impressive stunt occurs when Rosendahl lands the Los Angeles on the aircraft carrier Saratoga (04:18). The episode shows the ship’s crew and commander, Rosendahl. In 1928, Rosendahl is an observer on the flight of the Graf Zeppelin (05:11; 05:36), as it travels from Friedrichshafen to Lakehurst (05:44). The Akron is built (06:25) and Rosendahl is given command of the ship. Rosendahl speaks about the progress of the ship (06:44), then he oversees its test flight (06:55). Rosendahl discusses the tests that the Akron is put through. What appears to be the crew of the Akron (07:57) bids Rosendahl farewell as he leaves for sea duty. Afterward, Rosendahl takes command of Naval Air Station at Lakehurst (08:33), and he is on the field to welcome the arrival of the Hindenburg (08:57) at Lakehurst, but the ship explodes and crashes. Flames engulf the wrecked dirigible. The Los Angeles (09:47) is grounded, despite Rosendahl defending the use of American dirigibles. Rosendahl is transferred to sea duty on the light cruiser Milwaukee (10:23). Cruisers sail on the ocean. During World War II, merchant ships sail across the Atlantic (10:41), but are harassed by German U-boats. A German torpedo hits a merchant ship (10:53). Rosendahl is put in charge of training crews and commanding dirigibles that fly over the Atlantic (11:07), controlling convoy routes. Rosendahl receives the distinguished Flying Cross (11:25). The episode ends with shots of Rosendahl and flying dirigibles.

Today (05.02.2019) the last Germania flight landed at 01:08 am.
This flight from Fuerteventura to Nurnberg with the Callsign ST3711 finished the history of the 33 year old airline.
Germania was one of the first airlines we ever have spotted. And the first Airline we've ever spotted together as Germania was a regular visitor of the Braunschweig/Wolfsburg Airport until 2017.
It 's really sad to see another airline ceasing operations. We'll definitely miss this green airline.

UL-39 Albi ultralight ducted-fan 'jet' 2016
The UL-39 'Albi' prototype is a small L-39 'Albatross' replica designed at Czech University of Technology and built by LA Composites and Jihlavan Airplanes. First test flight on 4 April 2016 by Radim Sterba, Skyleader test pilot.

The UL-39 Albi airframe, ducted fan and many other components are made from pre-preg carbon fibre composite which has been autoclaved for maximum strength. This prototype is powered by a BMW motorcycle engine driving the internal ducted fan. This propulsion layout, with its side intakes and rear nozzle, gives the aircraft the jet fighter look and feel.
This is the first prototype. It is intended to develop the aircraft further and hopefully put it into production. One market is private aviation, but another is military. The price is estimated at Euro 180,000 (NZ$300,000).
