In January of this year British newspapers began running articles about Robert Smith, a surgeon at Falkirk and District Royal Infirmary, in Scotland. Smith had amputated the legs of two patients at their request, and he was planning to carry out a third amputation when the trust that runs his hospital stopped him. These patients were not physically sick. Their legs did not need to be amputated for any medical reason. Nor were they incompetent, according to the psychiatrists who examined them. They simply wanted to have their legs cut off. In fact, both the men whose limbs Smith amputated have declared in public interviews how much happier they are, now that they have finally had their legs removed.
Healthy people seeking amputations are nowhere near as rare as one might think. In May of 1998 a seventy-nine-year-old man from New York traveled to Mexico and paid $10,000 for a black-market leg amputation; he died of gangrene in a motel. In October of 1999 a mentally competent man in Milwaukee severed his arm with a homemade guillotine, and then threatened to sever it again if surgeons reattached it. That same month a legal investigator for the California state bar, after being refused a hospital amputation, tied off her legs with tourniquets and began to pack them in ice, hoping that gangrene would set in, necessitating an amputation. She passed out and ultimately gave up. Now she says she will probably have to lie under a train, or shoot her legs off with a shotgun.
For the first time that I am aware of, we are seeing clusters of people seeking voluntary amputations of healthy limbs and performing amputations on themselves. The cases I have identified are merely those that have made the newspapers. On the Internet there are enough people interested in becoming amputees to support a minor industry. One discussion listserv has 1,400 subscribers.
It was the most satisfying operation I have ever performed, Smith told a news conference in February. I have no doubt that what I was doing was the correct thing for those patients. Although it took him eighteen months to work up the courage to do the first amputation, Smith eventually decided that there was no humane alternative. Psychotherapy doesn't make a scrap of difference in these people, the psychiatrist Russell Reid, of Hillingdon Hospital, in London, said in a BBC documentary on the subject, called Complete Obsession, that was broadcast in Britain last winter. You can talk till the cows come home; it doesn't make any difference. They're still going to want their amputation, and I know that for a fact. Both Smith and Reid pointed out that these people may do themselves unintended harm or even kill themselves trying to amputate their own limbs. As the retired psychiatrist Richard Fox observed in the BBC program, Let's face it, this is a potentially fatal condition.
Yet the psychiatrists and the surgeon were all baffled by the desire for amputation. Why would anyone want an arm or a leg cut off? Where does this sort of desire come from? Smith has said that the request initially struck him as absolutely, utterly weird. It seemed very strange, Reid told the BBC interviewer.

8. PALM ISLANDS
Dubai is no stranger to engineering accomplishments. The cosmopolitan city boasts the world’s tallest skyscraper and is also home to the world’s largest indoor theme park, IMG Worlds of Adventure, in the middle of a desert!!
7. HOOVER DAM
The hoover dam is located on the border between Arizona and Nevada in the USA. The dam provides flood control, and is a huge supplier of hydroelectric power.
Despite criticism from skeptics, who thought the $49 million project would fail financially or that the dam simply couldn’t be built, plans moved forward. By the way, in today’s money, that would be $860 million!
6. LARGE HADRON COLLIDER
The 17-mile-long Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, is the world’s most powerful particle accelerator. It’s buried 575 feet (175 m) underground, on the border of France and Switzerland and was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Over 100 countries and over 10,000 scientists collaborate with this project that cost over 7.5 billion Euros to build.
5. THE FALKIRK WHEEL
The Falkirk Wheel is the world’s only rotating boat lift, connecting the Forth & Clyde Canal and the Union Canal in Scotland. When it opened in 2002, the two canals were connected for the first time since the 1930’s, when a staircase of eleven locks, which had taken nearly a day to transit, was dismantled. The construction of the wheel was part of the Millenium Link project, which sought to reconnect the two canals.
4. THE CHANNEL TUNNEL
The Channel Tunnel, or the “Chunnel” for short, is a famous underground passageway between Britain and France that connects the United Kingdom to the European mainland. The 31-mile tunnel actually consists of three tunnels, two of which are used for trains, and one which serves as an emergency exit and as a service tunnel. It is the longest underwater tunnel in the world.
3. BURJ KHALIFA
When I mentioned earlier that Dubai is home to the world’s biggest skyscraper, I was referencing the Burj Khalifa, which stands at an astonishing 2,712 feet high - approximately twice the height of the Empire State Building and three times that of the Eiffel Tower!
2. LANGKAWI SKY BRIDGE
Located on top of Malaysia’s Machinchang Mountain at 2,170 feet above sea level, the Langkawi Sky Bridge is a 410-f00t long, curved pedestrian cable-stayed bridge. And just getting to it is a chore! The top station is the first point of access, and visitors are transported there via the Langkawi Cable Car, which is the world’s steepest skycab. From there, visitors are taken to the bridge by an inclined lift called the SkyGlide.
1. PANAMA CANAL
Building this entirely manmade, 48-mile-long waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans came with numerous challenges. The idea for the construction of a canal to shorten the journey around the southern tip of South America emerged as early as the 16th century. During the 1880’s, a French construction team was forced to abandon the project due to technological and financial constraints.

The Most Dangerous Stretch of Water in the World: The Strid at Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire
I know, I know, it's a clickbait title. But I stand by it, because the water is so deceptive, and so pretty, and there's a path that leads straight down to it and that jump looks very, very possible...
The 12th century legend is the Boy of Egremont, immortalised in poetry by the famous William Wordsworth. His The Force of Prayer is about the Strid and the Boy of Egremont, and the full text is here:
Also, I need to make one correction: I say a hundred metres upstream, but that shot's actually about that far downstream. I couldn't fix that in post, but since the river's basically the same for a mile or so in each direction with no significant confluences, it's a small enough slip that I don't think it's too bad. The amount of water is the same!

Focus Falkirk Video 2 Falkirk Sheriff Court 4th September 2012
Visited Falkirk Sheriff Court to speak to the person who what i thought had the authority as a whole clerk? he still had a duty to report what we both were suffering back then in 2012. I have reported this abuse to everybody with a duty or office to investigate? All have failed. Seven years of sheer abuse from all corners back to back and rapid with no chance to repair from the effects of the torturous procedures and destruction to our lives that has been the alomode for 12 years.

No Fracking Falkirk 4/12 Paddy Hogg
Shot on 7th December 2014 outside the Ineos plant at Grangemouth at the No Fracking Falkirk Peaceful Protest:The People's Voice.
Collecting from newspaper and Internet articles about fracking and its negative consequences. The articles reported legitimate studies (not funded by the oil and gas industry) or statements from recognized experts on fracking, health, and environmental protection.
Fracking
1) Reduces real estate values.
2) Causes earthquakes.
3) Damages roads through heavy trucks/equipment traffic;
4) Contributes to over half of ground level ozone recorded locally.
5) Pollutes water through casings that break.
6) Contaminates water in floods.
7) Poisons soil through pipe and tank leaks.
8) Increases climate change through release of methane — that can also causes fatal explosions.
9) Causes house rental rates to rise;
10) Uses enormous amounts of water — half of which cannot be recovered
11) Hurts Scotland's economy through loss of tourism;
12) Causes environmental disasters with taxpayers paying clean-up the costs.
13) Economically hurts our growing organic farm industry.
14) Increases upper respiratory illness, asthma, and neurological disorders.
15) Destroys animal and plant environments endangering life of large mammals.
16) Reduces people of Scotland's quality of life. (changes a naturally beautiful country to an industrial mess)
17) Brings radioactive water to the surface.
18) Costs jobs in the sustainable, renewable energy industry which produces three times as many jobs as oil and gas does;
19) Delays research and development of alternative energy while increasing our dependence on fossil fuels. Wave energy company has even gone into liquidation because the UK government cut their research funding.
20) Can't be regulated due to the lack of inspectors for the huge amount of wells.
21) Creates a boom/bust economy of transient jobs that does not lower unemployment.
22) Causes irreparable damage to our environment; is exempt from Government water and air regulations;
23) Puts chemicals in the ground names of which the oil and gas industry will not tell us.
24) Causes unnecessary lawsuits which taxpayers pay for and corporations deduct from their taxes.
25) Creates tremendous disturbances to our peace through bright (24/7) lights and noise;
26) Pollutes water and soil as 1 in 6 injection wells leak or fail.
27) Impedes our development in becoming independent of fossil fuels and the Middle East;
28) Uses cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene and trihalomethane;
29) Produces spillages in that contaminate ground water.
30) Dumps sludge-like drill cuttings in waste pits on agricultural fields.
31) Creates clean ups that take years to complete.
32) Crushes subsurface ecosystems vital to farming.
33) Contributes to global warming through producing volatile organic compounds and ground level ozone (causing droughts and forest fires);
34) Creates High-level smog in ground-level ozone;
35) They dumps propane and ethane from storage tanks creating ozone pollution.
36) Causes real estate tax revenue to drop and consequently reduces public services.
37) Dramatically increases truck traffic making cycling, running, and walking more dangerous.
It is difficult for a person to keep all these above-mentioned facts in their mind. The case against fracking, when considered from a comprehensive viewpoint is clear. It is bad on many levels. The negative reasons are documented, scientifically backed, and factual.
So the question is: Are we going to continue to let the oil and gas corporations buy the right to violate our health, safety, welfare, and community rights? We have just one world to leave to our children.
Thanks to Jördi McArthur for compiling this list.
World's Largest Cruise Ship Sucks the Water off Fort Lauderdale Beach
Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas departs Port Everglades, Florida. As the ship powers through the narrow inlet, it sucks the water out of the tidal areas nearby.
