The Auckland central business district (CBD), also called the city centre by Auckland Council, is the geographical and economic heart of the Auckland metropolitan area. It is the area in which Auckland was established in 1840, by William Hobson.
The CBD is one of the most densely developed places in New Zealand, with many commercial and some residential developments packed into a space of only 433 hectares (1,070 acres). The area is made up of the city's largest concentration of skyscrapers and businesses. Bounded by several major motorways and by the harbour coastline in the north, it is surrounded further out by mostly suburban areas; it is bounded on the North by Waitematā Harbour, east by Parnell, southeast by Grafton, south by Mount Eden, southwest by Newton, west by Freemans Bay and northwest by Viaduct Harbour.
The Sky Tower is a telecommunications and observation tower in Auckland, New Zealand. Located at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets within the city's CBD, it is 328 metres (1,076 ft) tall, as measured from ground level to the top of the mast, making it the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere and the 25th tallest tower in the world. It has become an iconic landmark in Auckland's skyline due to its height and unique design.
The tower is part of the SkyCity Auckland casino complex, originally built in 1994–1997 for Harrah's Entertainment. Several upper levels are accessible to the public, attracting an average of 1,150 visitors per day (over 415,000 per year)

New Year 2020 Auckland Skytower fireworks New Zealand
New Zealand has welcomed in the new year - and decade - in spectacular style across the country, including a huge fireworks display in Auckland.
Thousands gathered at vantage points to see the fireworks alight from Auckland's Sky Tower and where, for the first time, lasers and animations accompanied the display to take New Zealand into 2020.
New Year celebrations were in full swing at Federal St in Auckland's CBD, as the fireworks exploded from the Sky Tower.
Others gathered at Silo Park, Bastion Pt and Mt Eden while on the North Shore, Bayswater Marina, Devonport's Mt Victoria and Queens Parade offered brilliant vantage points, along with Harbour View Beach Reserve on the Te Atatū Peninsula.

Welcome to the first video of my vlog series on my 3 week adventure around New Zealand with my new husband, Owen! Make sure to answer my question of the day at the bottom of this description to help me get to know you better! :)
Owen and I flew to Auckland, New Zealand (not the easiest flights from Seattle), and stayed in Ponsonby which is located on the North Island.
We woke up and ate at the tastiest cafe before walking to downtown Auckland through Victoria Park and heading to the Sky Tower.
We drank wine at the top of the Sky Tower and watched a stranger do the Sky Tower Bungy. Hard pass for me.
We ate an incredible dinner in Ponsonby Central and called it an early night! Jet lag and all...
We even got a parking ticket! What a day.

Auckland fire: thousands evacuated as huge blaze takes hold
A fire burned in the heart of New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, starting from the roof of the SkyCity centre, which is still under construction. Thousands of people were evacuated. Workers on the site were sent away immediately, but as the fire continued to rage, other areas – including New Zealand's tallest building, Sky Tower – were cleared. The New Zealand fire service asked residents to stay clear of the city centre and a spokesperson said it was 'a very, very difficult fire to extinguish'
