LEAD IN:
The summer holidays often mean building sand castles by the sea - but in Bulgaria they take the idea to a whole new limit.
Artists from more than 22 countries using more than three thousand tonnes of sand have sculpted the resort's golden sands into surreal circus scenes.
STORYLINE:
Roll up, roll up to see the amazing sand sculptures.
Fantastical sculptures made of sand are captivating visitors at Bulgaria's third sand sculptures festival in the Black Sea coastal town of Burgas, east of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia.
Despite the absence of a Big Top (circus tent) the circus themed event features clowns, monkeys wearing ruffled collars and strongmen.
The third annual festival has attracted entries of more than 20 artists from 22 countries from locations as diverse as Russia, USA, Italy and Spain.
I am happy that this year we have Bulgarian artists like me at the festival and that it is one of the most popular events in this town this year, says Sasha Mihailov, Sand Sculptor.
The impressive and imposing sculptures -- some twice the size of an average man -- are made from natural materials including sand, water and clay.
The use of clay helps them to withstand the rain.
The main rule is that the sculptors must only use materials which are safe for the environment.
But sand grains will not stick together unless the sand is reasonably fine.
While dry sand is loose, wet sand sticks together if appropriate amounts of sand and water are used in the mixture.
Shovels and buckets are the main construction tool used in creating the sand castles and sand sculptures, although some people only use their hands.
Sand sculpting as an art form has become very popular in recent years especially in coastal beach areas.
Hundreds of annual competitions are held all over the world.
I am very impressed with this festival. I am here with my family, says tourist, Silvia Danailova.
