Skybury
When talking about coffee, the famous cafes of Paris, Berlin and London all come to mind..but they have to get their beans from somewhere right...and here in Tropical North Queensland is the largest exporter of Australian grown coffee.
I'm at Skybury Coffee Plantation, on the Atherton Tablelands.
Started in 1987, this family based business is the passion of Ian and Marion MacLaughlin and now son Mark is the Farm Manager.
Mark is taking us on one of the guided tours available. Its a great way to see how it all works and where that latte begins.
After the farm tour its off to the coffee centre.
Skybury uses a technique first developed by the MacLaughins that keeps the freshness all the way from the tree to the cup.
The attention to detail here is second to none. Everything from the picking to the grinding is aimed at retaining the originality and taste for the customer.
Skybury Coffee Plantation is located 10 minutes from Mareeba, and around 1 hour drive from Cairns.
The farm and coffee centre are open from 10am-4pm daily and all ages are welcome
You can drive yourself, or transfers are available through various tour companies.

Video Transcript:
- Jacques Farm, which is in the Atherton Tablelands of Mareeba, has been there for over 30 years, they grow, and distribute, and roast their own bean.
- Out here we have 85,000 Arabica coffee trees, producing a really high quality coffee. The whole plantation consists of about 200 acres with two kilometers of creek frontage. We also have a plantation cafe along with obviously, the kitchen and the factories and everything else that goes along with it. We have various pumps around the property that are consuming electricity. We also have four residences here as well. So, along with the residences, the factories, the cafe, the kitchen, the pumps, there's a lot of energy usage to keep a farm going. The biggest energy user on a farm is the pumps. If you can negate the power that you use in your pumps, then you're on a winner. Now that isn't very expensive for the water itself, the main consideration is the power pumping the water out of the creek, over the coffee trees.
- So the brief was, at stage one, was to do the 85 kilowatts. So, you wanted a panel that could maximize it's return. Being that Mareeba is an hour west of Cairns, it does get quite hot there and we're really worried about the temperature coefficiency. He knew all about that and he wanted the NeON R. So, that was a pretty easy brief for us to fulfill.
- The NeON R, obviously arguably, the best panel on the planet at the moment. And, I mainly chose it because of the technology behind it, also the temperature coefficient. We're up here in North Queensland and it gets hot. In the hot weather, the panels are going to be performing a hell of a lot better.
- He did a lot of research before approaching us and hence we quoted with a high end LG NeON R range panel, 85 kilowatts across four electricity counts to supply them with 44 cents. So, they're right in the midst of installing that on existing carport roofs and then we got another 80 kilowatts to cover the cafe and also a pump house. Across the installations, they'll be 165 kilowatts of solar panel and inverters gonna be installed across the four sites and savings stage 1, 85 kilowatts, will have a pay back period of less than 2 years. Even with the high end quality spec'ed. The cafe and the pump house, which will go on the cafe and the workshop, is expected to have a pay back of about only 3 and a half years. So, economically, he said it was a no brainer.
- It's crazy if you don't. If you're not using solar power, you're A, you're costing a lot of extra carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere. B, your hit pocket. It's the main consideration.
Coffee Processing
Ever wondered how green coffee is processed ready for export and domestic distribution? Skybury BDM Paul Fagg shows just how labour intensive processing coffee is, as quality control is absolutely paramount at Skybury.
20th International Croc Trophy visits Skybury Tropical Plantation
The longest stage of the 2014 Crocodile Trophy took its riders from the historic mining town of Irvinebank to the picturesque Skybury Coffee Plantation near Mareeba. The reigning Hungarian National Marathon Champion was in his element in the hot Outback temperatures winning the stage ahead of Cory Wallace (CAN) and Greg Saw, who again defended his leader jersey. Imogen Smith, the Elite Woman, braved the tough conditions to finish mid-field.
As riders praised the delicious coffee, the super-sweet bananas and juicy papayas that are grown at Skybury's Tropical Plantation, organiser Gerhard Schönbacher called Skybury a paradise of a stage finish.
