The Isle of Skye, connected to Scotland's northwest coast by bridge, is known for its rugged landscapes, picturesque fishing villages and medieval castles. The largest island in the Inner Hebrides archipelago, it has an indented coastline of peninsulas and narrow lochs, radiating out from a mountainous interior. The town of Portree, a base for exploring the island, features harbourside pubs and boutiques.
Isle of Skye is the largest and northernmost of the major islands in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The island's peninsulas radiate from a mountainous centre dominated by the Cuillins, the rocky slopes of which provide some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the country. Although it has been suggested that the Gaelic Sgitheanach describes a winged shape there is no definitive agreement as to the name's origins.
The main industries are tourism, agriculture, fishing and forestry. Skye is part of the Highland Council local government area. The island's largest settlement is Portree, known for its picturesque harbour. There are links to various nearby islands by ferry and, since 1995, to the mainland by a road bridge. The climate is mild, wet and windy. The abundant wildlife includes the golden eagle, red deer and Atlantic salmon. The local flora are dominated by heather moor, and there are nationally important invertebrate populations on the surrounding sea bed. Skye has provided the locations for various novels and feature films and is celebrated in poetry and song.
Portree in the north at the base of Trotternish is the largest settlement and is the main service centre on the island. Broadford, the location of the island's only airstrip, is on the east side of the island and Dunvegan in the north-west is well known for its castle and the nearby Three Chimneys restaurant. The 18th-century Stein Inn on the Waternish coast is the oldest pub on Skye. Kyleakin is linked to Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland by the Skye Bridge, which spans the narrows of Loch Alsh. Uig, the port for ferries to the Outer Hebrides, is on the west of the Trotternish peninsula and Edinbane is between Dunvegan and Portree. Much of the rest of the population lives in crofting townships scattered around the coastline.
Skye is linked to the mainland by the Skye Bridge, while ferries sail from Armadale on the island to Mallaig, and from Kylerhea to Glenelg. Ferries also run from Uig to Tarbert on Harris and Lochmaddy on North Uist, and from Sconser to Raasay. The Isle of Skye Airfield at Ashaig, near Broadford, is used by private aircraft and occasionally by NHS Highland and the Scottish Ambulance Service for transferring patients to hospitals on the mainland.

Kinloch Lodge, Sleat, Isle of Skye, Scotland
My wonderful girlfriend found Kinloch Lodge when we were planning a trip to the Scottish Highlands, Skye and Islay for distillery tours. Kinloch Lodge is the highland home of Claire and Godfrey Macdonald and Claire supervises the restaurant experience with award winning Chef Marcello Tully.
From the moment we stepped in to the hotel we were treated like an old friend with a warm and casual environment implied by the lodge feel. The food and accommodations are world-class, with Kinloch being recently lauded as one of the top 25 small hotels in the world by Condé Nast Traveller magazine - and being one of Scotland's precious few Michelin-starred restaurants - you won't be disappointed!
The dash footage was shot with my Samsung Note 4 phone, while the drone footage was taken with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ in February of 2015.
Thank you Kinloch and we'll being seeing you again!

Scotland on a Budget | How to plan a trip to the Isle of Skye without flying, without a car, by rail
eyy check it out I made a video..
Tips for planning a trip to the Isle of Skye on a budget. We had an amazing and comparably cheap trip from the Isle of Wight to Skye, which we did without a car and without flying. The Scottish Highlands can be a very expensive destination, so these are some tips from our week in Broadford and Portree for how to do it without breaking the bank.
To see the full experience of this beautiful place, check out my video of the journey here:
We slept in a room on the Caledonian Sleeper, then rode the Deerstalker from Fort William to Mallaig, then the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale, and then the stagecoach bus from Armadale to Broadford and later Broadford to Portree. More information:
One thing I didn't mention in this travel planning on a budget video, be sure to take waterproof trousers and a decent waterproof coat, even it's sunny when you leave. They saved us so many times!
Mostly if you avoid the temptation to have £20 local mussels for dinner and do whiskey tours, you will save a lot of money. We just made our own meals from the co-op and had a great time on hikes around Portree. Time spent outside on this island is never wasted, and I'd love to go back some day :) We saw the quiraing, fairy pools, fairy glens, and lots of Scottish history but didn't get to do a raasay boat tour because of bad weather.

Coastal wildlife at Armadale, Isle of Skye - Pine Marten, Otters, Dolphins
A beautiful calm sea in Armadale bay, close to the ferry terminal, with otters, dolphins, a pine marten and crystal clear water. Great views up the Sound of Sleat and over to the remotest part of mainland Britain - the Knoydart peninsula, where you can visit the remotest pub, The Old Forge at Inverie, on Loch Nevis, only by boat (ferry from Mallaig).
Armadale is just 8 miles from Alavik Lodge and Cottage - two self catering holiday homes with the most spectacular view of Loch Slapin, Loch Eishort and the dramatic Cuillin mountain range.
