2 day Backpacking Trip of the Skyline Trail, in Jasper National Park, August 2019
I set off with a group of three friends, for a quick 2 day hike of the famous Skyline Trail in Jasper National Park, Alberta Canada. Sadly, no dogs or hammocks allowed on this trail, so I was without my girl Wanda, and sleeping on the ground like a peasant. This hike took place August 2019
Our original plan, was starting at Maligne Lake, over Little shovel pass and Big shovel pass, with a night at Watchtower, with the Notch and signal fire road on day 2. Unfortunately, heavy winds, rain, and zero visibility at the Notch changed our trip to an in and out from Maligne Lake to Watchtower. But, the sun came out and greeted us in the afternoon and presented us with some amazing views!

Skyline Trail, Jasper - (Part 1) - 4 days/3 nights, 44 km. Family backpack
The Skyline Trail is a hiking trail in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The trail is recognized as one of the most scenic and popular backpacking trails in the Canadian Rockies. With 25 km of the total 44.1 km of the trail at or above the treeline, it offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It is normally hiked over two days from Maligne Lake to the bottom of Signal Mountain, but we chose to hike it at a more moderate pace over 4 days. It is recommended to hike the trail south to north from Maligne Lake, as the fire road descending to Signal Mountain on the north end is an 800m elevation loss. There are three challenging passes to conquer, including the highest section of trail in Jasper National Park, called the Notch.
Filmed Aug 10-13, 2017.
There are campgrounds at 5 km, 8 km, 12 km, 19 km, 30 km, and 35 km, offering options for hikers of any persuasion (Evelyn Creek, Little Shovel, Snowbowl, Curator, Tekarra, and Signal respectively).
Camping is only permitted at the designated campgrounds, which must be reserved in advance. Visitors are recommended to book sites as early as possible, as the Skyline Trail is one of the busiest backpacking trails in the Rockies.
This is my 6th time on the Skyline, 2nd for my wife and the first time for the boys. I’m lucky because I got to enjoy it back in the days when it wasn’t so popular. Back then I could bring my dog and make fires at the campsites that were below the tree line. (Dogs are now banned because of a few caribou). I’ve seen the transformation over the year. Now the trail has been built up with mechanical hoes, culverts have been installed and the bridges are made of pressure treated lumber. The campsites have steel food caches, chemical toilets, picnic tables and built-up tent pads.
It’s still a gorgeous area worth seeing. The latest problem is that the park takes on-line electronic reservations for the trail. They don’t even save room for last minute walk-ups. Since only about 30 people can start on the trail every day, and because there is snow well into July, the hiking season is very short. All the camp sites were reserved by noon on the opening day of the reservation system back in January.
Our trip itinerary wasn’t ideal because we had to hike only
8.3 km on the first day and stay at the Little Shovel campground. The next day we hiked to Curator.
This video is about the views along the way, especially at the Curator basin, and not so much about hiking skills. This is not my usual format, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
Part 2, featuring the “Notch”, will be even more spectacular.
Great solo 4 day backpack on Skyline trail in Jasper National Park! Day 1,
Day 1 of a 4 day backpack down Skyline trail in JNP. I made it to Snowbowl.
2:45 Maligne Lake Trailhead
6:39 Lorraine Lake
8:16 Mona Lake
11:41 Evelyn Creek and Campground
15:36 Little Shovel Campground
18:03 Little Shovel Pass
22:22 Snowbowl Campground
A beat up knee was sort of a worry but it ended up ok and made it even farther than I had planned. Lorraine and Mona Lakes are nice but Little Shovel pass and Snowbowl completely stole the show!

Hiking Sulphur Skyline Trail in Jasper National Park, A detailed description
A detailed description of how to get to the Sulphur skyline trail head, and along the trail. The trail is a 4.1 km each way with a total of 675 m vertical gain. The summit is spectacular and well worth the effort. This is a must do trail in Jasper National Park especially with the reward of taking a dip in Miette hot springs when you are done. #jaspernationalpark #jasperhike #sulphurskyline #hiking

Skyline Trail Jasper Ab - Day 1
In July 2016, I packed a bag decided to hike the Skyline Trail in Jasper Alberta. This trail is a popular trail and can be difficult to book unless done as soon as online booking opens. It is however a must do. Every step is seemingly more rewarding than the last. I would and will do this one again. This is my experience.
