Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
Skyrail’s Smithfield Terminal is located approximately 15 minutes’ drive from Cairns city and 50 minutes’ drive from Port Douglas.
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is a 7.5 km scenic cableway running above the Barron Gorge National Park, in the Wet Tropics of Queensland’s World Heritage Area. North of Cairns. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway journeys through the Wet Tropics Rainforest, home to the world's oldest tropical rainforest, older than the Amazon Rainforest.
The cableway, which journeys over the McAlister Range between Smithfield and Kuranda, includes six-person gondola cabins that glide metres above the treetops. A one-way trip takes about 1.5 hours, and a return trip is about 2.5 hours. Two rainforest stations, Red Peak and Barron Falls, allow exploration of the forest floor on boardwalks and education of the World Heritage area.

Cairns Skyrail Rainforest Cableway View From Skyrail Terminal to Kuranda
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is a Cairns attraction with a Terminal in Kuranda and is accessible from Cairns, Palm Cove, Port Douglas and the Atherton Tablelands. Stretching 7.5km through the tropical rainforests of North Queensland, Skyrail provides people with a unique opportunity, and a world first, to see and experience ancient tropical rainforest in a safe and environmentally friendly way.
Skyrail opened to the public on 31st August 1995. The cableway was originally installed with 47 gondolas, giving it a carrying capacity of 300 people per hour, however a $2.5million upgrade completed in May 1997 increased the total number of gondolas to 114 and increased the carrying capacity to 700 people per hour.
The cableway is 7.5 kilometres (4.7 miles) long.
It has a total of 103 regular gondola cabins, each capable of seating 6 passengers and 11 Diamond View gondolas, each capable of seating 5 passengers. This combined provides a carrying capacity of approximately 650 passengers per hour in each direction.
The cableway can operate at a speed of five metres per second (18 kilometres per hour, or 11 miles per hour); however its normal operating speed is much slower to provide guests with the maximum time to enjoy their rainforest experience.
There are 32 towers in total. The highest tower is 40.5 metres (133 feet) high.
Red Peak is Skyrail’s highest station at 545 metres above sea level (1,788 feet). The Kuranda Station sits at 336 metres (1,100 feet) and Smithfield Terminal is only 5 metres above sea level (16 feet).
The steepest section of the cableway has a slope of 19 degrees.
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway has 15 kilometres of 40.5mm galvanised steel rope weighing more than the equivalent of 100 sedan cars.
There is a multi-core communications cable which runs in the middle of the towers, between the two lines of haul rope. This carries all the voice and safety circuit communications.
The cableway is driven by a 383kW (500hp) D.C Electric Motor located at each drive station, the Kuranda and Smithfield Stations. Each drive station has a back-up diesel motor and a further auxiliary Hydrostatic Drive.

It was scary and nerve racking thinking the cable would snap or the car would get stuck or fall into the forest and crush me.

KURANDA SKYRAIL, CAIRNS | Australian family vlog
The Kuranda Skyrail, near Cairns, is one of North Queensland's most famous tourist attractions. It takes you soaring above the rainforest to the secluded village of Kuranda, a tourist mecca in the jungle. One the way you can visit the majestic Barron Falls, which were really pumping when we visited in the wet season. There's also a train if you don't like heights, but in our opinion the Skyrail is a must!

A short video of the Kuranda Skyrail Rainforest Cableway that goes over Australia’s World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforest canopy and deep into the forest. This is from the village of Kuranda, down to the Smithfield Station about 7.5klms in length. A couple of stations along the way allow you to get off and have a wander around a couple of walkways enjoying the rainforest. A unique way to see the rainforest from above.
