Rathlannon Castle - Wexford, Ireland
Rathlannon is the oldest surviving Esmonde family Castle in Ireland. While many contemporary sources propose the 1400's for its' construction, the 1921 book - The past : the organ of the Ui Ceinnsealaigh Historical Society states: The remains of the antique tower of Rathlannon are in the Deer-park of Johnstown at a short distance from the Castle. There is a tradition that this building was at one time occupied by two sisters of the Esmonde family. The erection of Rathlannan Keep has been attributed to Sir Geoffrey de Estmound of Huntingdon in Lincolnshire, soon after the Invasion of 1169 (c).
(c) H. F. H. MS.. Vol. 40. p. 80.
Geoffrey de Estmound (or de Estmonte) is believed to have been one of the first Cambro-Norman Knights to arrive in Ireland.
(e) Esmondes (or Estmontes). — This ancient and distinguished family (now- represented by Sir T. H. Esmonde, Bart, of Ballynastragh) sprung from Sir Geotfry de Estmonte (Knt.) of Huntingdon, Lines., landed at Bannow with Fitzstephen in 1169 and obtained large grants of land in Forth. Henry Estmonde was Seneschal of Wexford, 1294; Chancellor 1310. The Visitation of Wexford 1608 begins with John Esmonde, his grandson Laurence was raised to the Peerage in 1622 ; was Major General and Governor of Duncannon, etc.
Rathlannon Castle is located on the grounds of Johnstown Castle - Wexford, Ireland.
Rathlannon is the anglicized form of the Irish, Ráth Lonáin, meaning 'Lonan's fort'. This appears to be a practice of the Normans choosing (or keeping) the Irish names for their property. In Nicholas Furlong's A History of County Wexford, he writes... In Wexford there are examples of Norman residences in which the name of the Irish aristocrat persists, for example Rath Lannan (Esmonde) and Rath Mac Nee (Rossitor). (p84)
Rathlannon also appears with numerous different spellings throughout history, including Rathlannan, Ralonnane, Rathlonan, Rathlonen, Rathlonnan, and Rathlannen.

‘Extremely fortunate’ no one died in fire at popular Wexford beach
Investigations are continuing into a large fire that ripped through 13 acres of land at Curracloe beach in Co Wexford on Sunday. Hundreds of tourists and bathers had to leave the beach as the fire spread rapidly through marram grass, threatening nearby mobile homes and a number of local businesses. While there was speculation the fire may have been started by a disposable barbecue, gardaí said their investigations were ongoing and they could not confirm the cause at this stage. Hook Head, County Wexford, Ireland - March 2010
2010, March 15th. A walk on the Hook Peninsula (Rinn Dubhan), County Wexford, Ireland.
Hook Lighthouse is a fantastic place that's well worth a visit and the coastal geomorphology of the peninsula is terrific.
The lighthouse has a decent gift/book shop and a cafe, while the handy shop Miskella's is nearby, as is The Templars Inn, which has good food, Guinness/Irish coffee, coastal views and hospitality - and a provides a nice stopover for camper-vans who spend a few euro at the Inn
