Exploring Slate Islands Provincial Park
#caribou #laketrout #ontariotrout
In this video, my brother Ted and I, along with out significant others, Tori and Heather, circumnavigate Patterson Island, the largest Island of the Slate Islands Archipelago. The islands lie about 12-kilometers off the north shore of Lake Superior near Terrace Bay, Ontario. And offer great fishing, spectacular scenery and camping as well as the best opportunity to view Woodland Caribou in Ontario. Our trip to the Slates was a blast for all members of our party who had varying expectations. My brother and I wanted to fish and explore, while the girls wanted to do a little of that, but wanted to view Caribou, and relax around camp a little more than we did. In the end the trip met all our individual expectations with little compromise.

Slate Islands Kayak Camping Trip (6th Annual Spina Bros. Trip)
IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT SEA KAYAK TRIP: SLATE ISLANDS PROVINCIAL PARK A New Year, A New Adventure: Each year, since we began this annual tradition (brothers weeklong backcountry kayak-camping trip), I think to myself there is just no possible way we can top the previous year’s location. We have been very fortunate to have already visited so many fantastic paddling destinations throughout Georgian Bay (Philip Edward, McCoys, Mink, Franklin, French River/Bustards, & Benjamin Islands) and of course last year's amazing coastal paddling route of Lake Superior Provincial Park. How do you top that? Well this year we decided to check-off another location from our growing bucket list that was actually supposed to be last season's trip but was changed last minute due to an unruly Lake Superior. The Slate Islands are located approximately 13kms off Lake Superior's beautiful and rugged north shore directly across from the quaint little town of Terrace Bay Ontario. This cluster of two large islands (& several smaller ones) are designated as a natural environment Provincial Park. There are no provincially marked campsites or services but there are several areas that have been established by locals over the years. The Islands are chocked full of amazing human and natural history. Most notably is the fact that the islands were created by a meteorite impact, and are home to a herd of endangered woodland caribou. Unfortunately we were unable to see any caribou on our circumnavigation of the islands. We have been told the population has declined due to wolves crossing to the islands over an ice bridge and that some caribou may have crossed back to the mainland. In recent news the Canadian Government has relocated woodland caribou from another Lake Superior Island (Michipicoten), facing the same challenges, over to the Slates with hope of saving the region’s dwindling population. ***The rest of the trip report is in the comments.***

Terrace Bay Ontario, Canada
This video is a montage of the 3 days I spent in Terrace Bay. Terrace Bay is a town with just over 1,000 people and has plans to grow in the coming years- this place is INCREDIBLE and offers more than I can fit into this nine minute video as I was only here for a few days. Hiking trails that extent around Lake Superior (51 kilometres long), a scenic beach & marina, a golf course, Aguasabon falls & gorge, Danny's cove, the Slate Islands boat tours & more are all here... I know I will be back here one day and I predict this hidden gem will continue to grow.
Hiking the Casque Isles Trail in Terrace Bay
The Casque Isles Trail is a gorgeous, hike within the communities of Terrace Bay, Schreiber, and Rossport in Northwestern Ontario. The trail skirts the edges of Lake Superior and provides some amazing views, incredible beaches, and good change of spotting some wildlife. A relaxing hike is the 30 minute one from Terrace Beacy Beach into the area of Danny's Cove as shown in this video. It was a cool April day when the hike took place and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Slate Islands (Ontario) - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Slate Islands archipelago is formed of two main islands, five minor islands and numerous islets located in northern Lake Superior, 10 km south of the town of Terrace Bay. The islands were created by a meteorite impact which formed a crater about 32 km wide. In 1985, the Ontario government established the Slate Islands as a natural environment provincial park. The islands are notable for having Ontario's largest herd of boreal woodland caribou.
The total surface area is about 36 km2. The nearby Leadman Group of islands 1 km east is often considered part of the Slate Islands.
The cooling effect of Lake Superior makes the Slate Islands a particularly harsh habitat for its latitude. As a result, islands harbour arctic and alpine plant species such as alpine chickweed , Dryas drummondii north), and alpine bistort, an Inuit delicacy eaten with seal oil. These arctic disjuncts are reminders of ice ages and associated tundra conditions in this area in the past.
The islands are home to woodland caribou which have been studied extensively from 1974 to today by Dr. A.T. Bergerud. The caribou are a classic example of island biogeography in action; the islands are notable for species that are absent but present on the adjacent mainland . No ungulates were present on the islands until the caribou arrived in the early 1900s. And, no predators of caribou were present. Caribou reached the highest population density in the world on the islands before the 1990s, with the herd estimated at 650 animals. After a food shortage and die-off in 1990, the numbers were reduced to about 100. In 2012 there are about 200 caribou on the Slate Islands. Wolves reached the archipelago in the early 1990s preying heavily on the caribou but for reasons not entirely known they disappeared a few years later.
