This interesting ruin is known locally as The Abbey but was actually a Dominican friary founded in the mid 13th century by Maurice FitzGerald. The site contains a great wealth of carvings including Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculpture, well preserved cloisters and the only sculptured 15th century high alter to survive in any Irish monastic church. The site is easily accessed from the centre of Sligo.

The camera man (ME!) tried to ignore how high up I was. Some good views. The Isle of Inisfree is sung by Tommy Fleming a great Sligo singer!

The site contains a great wealth of carvings including Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculpture, well preserved cloister and the only sculptured 15th century high altar to survive in any Irish monastic church. This enigmatic friary will inspire and enlighten it's visitors. Access o site is by stone stairway.
