Minister Ciarán Cannon TD |St Brigid's Day Exhibition opening Hamilton Gallery Sligo
Following its showing at 12 Star Gallery London, St Brigid's Day | 90 Women Artists was officially opened at Hamilton Gallery Sligo by Ciarán Cannon TD Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on February 9th.
The occasion was a celebration of the life of Leland Bardwell whose poem St Brigid's Day 1989 inspired the exhibition. The morning will included readings and reflections in celebration of Leland by author Brian Leyden, poets Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and Mary Branley and Professor Seán Golden.
Leland's son, composer Dr. John McLachlan, also spoke and his composition ‘Dog Ear’, composed in memory of Leland features as part of the exhibition.

Brian Mc Donagh is an artist from Sligo in the west of Ireland. His work can be described as figurative, lyrical, poetic, symbolic, atmospheric with oblique philosophical/political references and a strong sense of place, but with an over arching love of paint and painting. The importance of colour is immediately evident in his paintings, subtle rich colours are harmoniously combined or roughly laid on in wrinkled impasto. Working with paint which he grinds himself using only pigment, cold pressed linseed oil and natural bees wax he explores and exploits the individual characteristics of the ground pigments to make raw, beautiful paintings in an individual and instantly recognizable style.
Jack B Yeats is clearly an influence and other Irish painters such as Sean Mc Sweeney , Gerard Dillon and Nora Mc Guinness are also a reference. Born in Dublin in 1959 he moved to Sligo 30 years ago to study art under the instruction of Sean Mc Sweeney and John O Leary at the Sligo Regional College. He has exhibited widely in Ireland, Europe and the far east and his work can be found in collections all over the world. He is also an accomplished musician and a founding member of the Traditional Irish Music troupe Dervish. Many of his paintings get their titles from Traditional Irish Songs such as an Sean Bhean Bocht and Spalpin Fanach and are charged with an underlying melancholia, a longing to unwind the ever ticking clock and return to a mode of existence that is fast fading into the past.

E.gress Film Tour - Sligo Discussion Event
The filmic artwork 'E.gress' was exhibited for eight weeks at The Model in Sligo as part of its national tour. A discussion event at the exhibition opening was chaired by Ailbhe Murphy, the Director of Create (the national development agency for collaborative arts in Ireland) with guest speakers Maria Mulligan, a palliative care social worker from Sligo Hospice and artist Marie Brett. The topic of 'risk and trust' was explored through the conversation.This is a recording of the event and includes the speakers’ conversation plus audience members questions and comments. Marie-Louse Blaney, the Education Curator at The Model, sets the scene with an introduction to the speakers.
E.gress is a filmic artwork produced by artist Marie Brett working with musician Kevin O’Shanahan. The work was informed by ideas of how ambiguous loss theory relates to an experience of dementia and was produced following an intensive collaboration with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.
Marie was awarded an Arts Council touring and dissemination of work award to tour the artwork through Ireland during 2015/16. She partnered with diverse agencies and venues to deliver an extensive programme of exhibition and engagement events, touring to arts, health and civic venues.

Photographer Ciaran McHugh discusses 'Landscape of WB Yeats' exhibition on IrishTV
Sligo based landscape photographer Ciaran McHugh being interviewed about his Into the Twilight - the Landscape of WB Yeats photography exhibition for IrishTV. The exhibit was held in City Hall as part of the 2015 Tread Softly Festival.
The collection comprises a set of black and white panoramic images inspired by the physical landscape embodied in the writing of WB Yeats. It was originally launched by the British Ambassador to Ireland, Dominick Chilcott at The Hyde Bridge Gallery in March.2015.

Music is of great importance in Sligo, with many musicians both from Sligo and from around the world coming to Sligo to play and improve their craft.
Sligo culture was a significant inspiration on both poet and Nobel laureate W. B. Yeats and his brother the artist, illustrator and comics pioneer Jack Butler Yeats. An extensive collection of Jack B Yeats art is held in the Model Niland Gallery on the Mall.
Yeats Summer School takes place every year in the town and attracts scholars from all over the world, notably Japan.
Sligo town recently highlighted its connections with Goon Show star and writer Spike Milligan, whose father was from Sligo, by unveiling a plaque at the former Milligan family home at Number 5 Holborn Street.
The boy band Westlife was formed in 1998 in Sligo.
Traditional Irish music[edit]
Sligo has a long history and an international reputation for Irish music and sessions are held regularly in several venues. Sligo county has its own unique style and is famous all over the world for the quality of its traditional musicians. Many people come from all over the world to learn Irish traditional music in Sligo.
In the early 13th century the poet and crusader Muireadhach Albanach Ó Dálaigh kept a school of poetry at Lissadell north of Sligo town. He was Ollamh Fileadh (High Poet) to the Ó Domhnaill kings of Tír Chonaill. The school appears to have been dissolved after the Norman invasion. In the 16th century, the poet Tadhg Dall Ó hÚigínn wrote many praise poems in strict Dán Díreach metre for local chiefs and patrons such as the O'Conor Sligo. He was killed for a satire he wrote on the O'Haras. The annals record the death in 1561 of Naisse Mac Cithruadh, the most eminent musician that was in Éireann, by drowning on Lough Gill.
In the 17th century, two brothers from County Sligo, Thomas and William Connellan from Cloonamahon, were among the last of the great Irish bards and harpists. Thomas is the author of the tune Molly MacAlpin, now known as Carolan's Dream, and William may have written Love is a Tormenting Pain and Killiecrankie.
Sligo traditional musicians were important in the revival and transmission of this tradition when they emigrated to New York. Michael Coleman, James Morrison and Paddy Killoran were all recorded at this time. Musicians such as Joe O'Dowd and Eugene Gene Preston kept the Sligo tradition alive in the area through the middle of the 20th century. Gene Preston emigrated to Boston, MA (Dorchester) and played in all the dance halls from the 1950s to 1970s. Here is a link to an album recording circa 1967
Festivals[edit]
Sligo hosts many festivals throughout the year including Sligo Live occurring every October, The Sligo Summer Festival which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Sligo town and The Fleadh Cheoil which the town hosted in three consecutive years (1989, 1990 & 1991) and was host again in 2014 & 2015.
Sligo Jazz Project which happens every July is also very popular.
Sligo was host for the Fleadh Cheoil in both 2014 and 2015 where some 400,000 people attended the largest Irish music and dance festival in Ireland. Visitors from all over Europe, North America and Asia
