The European Pine Marten - Meža cauna
The European Pine Marten (Martes martes) is one of the most common predator that can be seen in forests of Slitere National Park and Latvia. This almost half meter long animal weighting 0.8-2.2 kg has brow coat. In winter its thick undercoat makes coat look greyish. Throat patch colour varies from light yellow to bright orange. This small animal has very long fingers with sharp nails that help climb trees and walk across snow without going down. Males mostly remain on ground because they are heavier than females that are lighter and can easily jump from tree to tree. The European Pine Marten has very wide food range. In summer they usually feed on different insects, amphibians, small insectivores, mouse-like rodents, birds, berries and fruits. When there is a bad year for mouse-like rodents pine marten mostly feed on squirrels and birds. It really likes honey that pine marten seeks not only in bumblebee nest but also in bee-gardens. In winter mostly it live by carrion. Pine marten can eat about 100g meat at once. It has to eat as much as 1/5 of its own weight a day to survive, so it has to run around quite much to make that happen. Hunting area in winters is larger than 10km2, so if pine marten has had bad luck in hunt it has to run even 30km to have something to eat, so carrion is very important. When tummy is full pine marten goes to its lair to sleep. Lair usually is made under tree roots, tree stumps in hollows or squirrel nests. However, if the weather is nice enough it can sleep in bigger bird nests, but when it is very cold it make a nest under snow. If there are many pine martens in the same territory they go hunting each by itself. To stay out of any conflicts, they leave scent marks. To mark their territory martens leave faeces, urine, rub their anal sacs against branches, ground or snow. When little animal is eating it shouldn't lose alertness so time to time it stands up to look around. The European Pine Marten is a rare animal in Western Europe while in Latvia it is common. Harsh winters when there are many fallen animals is celebration for this small animal.

Princesīte un trubadūrs. Aleksandra Špicberga, Dāvids Kalniņš [Official Music Video]
Imants Kalniņš, Viks 'Princess and Troubadour'. Song from the theatre ''Bremen town musicians.
Butterflies slide dancing light,
Will you come to dance with me, Princess,
Butterflies got sleep so sweet,
There is no music heard, it’s quiet here.
Let us leave the dance, my dear one,
But promise me to leave me not again.
If you will take me where butterfly orchid blooms,
Then I will not want to leave alone.
If you permit me to run barefoot,
If you will listen with me nightingales’ sing,
Then I will not want to leave alone,
Then I will not want to leave alone.
I will take you where nightingales sing
Where you can run barefoot,
Where you can fall in the softiest moss,
And walk through silver water spring.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills

SUMMARY
=======
Latvia ( or (listen); Latvian: Latvija [ˈlatvija]), officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Republika), is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. Since its independence, Latvia has been referred to as one of the Baltic states. It is bordered by Estonia in the northern region, Lithuania in the southern, to the east is Russia, and Belarus to the southeast, as well as sharing a maritime border with Sweden to the west. Latvia has 1,957,200 inhabitants and a territory of 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi). The country has a temperate seasonal climate. After centuries of Swedish, Polish and Russian rule, a rule mainly executed by the Baltic German aristocracy, the Republic of Latvia was established on 18 November 1918 when it broke away and declared independence from Russia in the aftermath of World War I. However, by the 1930s the country became increasingly autocratic after the coup in 1934 establishing an authoritarian regime under Kārlis Ulmanis. The country's de facto independence was interrupted at the outset of World War II, beginning with Latvia's forcible incorporation into the Soviet Union, followed by the invasion and occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941, and the re-occupation by the Soviets in 1944 to form the Latvian SSR for the next fifty years.
The peaceful Singing Revolution, starting in 1987, called for Baltic emancipation from Soviet rule and condemning the Stalinist regime's illegal takeover. It ended with the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia on 4 May 1990, and restoring de facto independence on 21 August 1991. Latvia is a democratic sovereign state, parliamentary republic and a very highly developed country according to the United Nations Human Development Index. Its capital Riga served as the European Capital of Culture in 2014. Latvian is the official language. Latvia is a unitary state, divided into 119 administrative divisions, of which 110 are municipalities and 9 are cities. Latvians and Livonians are the indigenous people of Latvia. Latvian and Lithuanian are the only two surviving Baltic languages.
Despite foreign rule from the 13th to 20th centuries, the Latvian nation maintained its identity throughout the generations via the language and musical traditions. However, as a consequence of centuries of Russian rule (1710–1918) and later Soviet occupation, Latvia is home to a large number of ethnic Russians (26.9% in Latvia), some of whom (14.1% of Latvian residents) have not gained citizenship, leaving them with no citizenship at all. Until World War II, Latvia also had significant minorities of ethnic Germans and Jews. Latvia is historically predominantly Lutheran Protestant, except for the Latgale region in the southeast, which has historically been predominantly Roman Catholic. The Russian population are largely Eastern Orthodox Christians.
Latvia is a member of the European Union, NATO, the Council of Europe, the United Nations, CBSS, the IMF, NB8, NIB, OECD, OSCE, and WTO. For 2014, the country was listed 46th on the Human Development Index and as a high income country on 1 July 2014. A full member of the Eurozone, it uses the euro as its currency since 1 January 2014, replacing the Latvian lats.

Olympic Mountains - Sunrise After Snowstorm Time-Lapse
This is the second snowstorm in Sequim, Washington in 2018. At 4:30 p.m., it began to snow hard and continued for the next several hours. This video captures the beginning of the storm as we drove down Highway 101 on our way home from shopping and in our backyard upon our arrival at home, then concluding with my first time-lapse video and digital photo recordings. I have high expectations for future time-lapse videos. Enjoy!

Science in concert with nature | Silvija Nora Kalnins and Ingus Ulmanis | TEDxRiga
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
What happens when musicians playing ambience music break out of the traditional concert venues and the scientists bring their fascinating knowledge to the public?
The beneficiaries of this idea are the audience who are privileged to experience a form of music which seeks to include the natural surroundings as one of its players – through lights, sounds and the public’s deeper understanding and appreciation created through this event.
Silvija Nora Kalniņš and Ingus Ulmanis, two of the three co-authors of the Dabas koncertzāle (Nature Concert Hall) share their concept on the stage of TEDxRiga — Silvija with the talk, Ingus with the vocal performance and Kaspars Tobis on the keyboards.
Nature Concert Hall has evolved from the year 2006 to stand for a concert conducted in the open-air to bring people closer to the understanding of that nature, its inhabitants and how to care for it.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
