Copenhagen, Denmark - Christiansborg Palace (2018)
Christiansborg Palace is a palace and government building on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It is the seat of the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), the Danish Prime Minister's Office and the Supreme Court of Denmark. Also, several parts of the palace are used by the Danish monarch, including the Royal Reception Rooms, the Palace Chapel and the Royal Stables.
The palace is thus home to the three supreme powers: the executive power, the legislative power, and the judicial power. It is the only building in the world that houses all three of a country's branches of government. The name Christiansborg is thus also frequently used as a metonym for the Danish political system, and colloquially it is often referred to as Rigsborgen (English: castle of the realm) or simply Borgen (English: the castle).
The present building, the third with this name, is the last in a series of successive castles and palaces constructed on the same site since the erection of the first castle in 1167. Since the early fifteenth century, the various buildings have served as the base of the central administration; until 1794 as the principal residence of the Danish kings and after 1849 as the seat of parliament.
The palace today bears witness to three eras of Danish architecture, as the result of two serious fires. The first fire occurred in 1794 and the second in 1884. The main part of the current palace, finished in 1928, is in the historicist Neo-baroque style. The chapel dates to 1826 and is in a neoclassical style. The showgrounds were built 1738-46, in a baroque style.
Christiansborg Palace is owned by the Danish state, and is run by the Palaces and Properties Agency. Several parts of the palace are open to the public.
Copenhagen is the capital and most populous city of Denmark. The city has a population of 775,033 (as of January 2018), of whom 613,288 live in the Municipality of Copenhagen and the Copenhagen urban area has a population of 1,308,893 (as of January 2018). Copenhagen is situated on the eastern coast of the island of Zealand; another small portion of the city is located on Amager, and is separated from Malmö, Sweden, by the strait of Øresund. The Øresund Bridge connects the two cities by rail and road.
Originally a Viking fishing village founded in the 10th century, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century. Beginning in the 17th century it consolidated its position as a regional centre of power with its institutions, defences and armed forces. After suffering from the effects of plague and fire in the 18th century, the city underwent a period of redevelopment. This included construction of the prestigious district of Frederiksstaden and founding of such cultural institutions as the Royal Theatre and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. After further disasters in the early 19th century when Horatio Nelson attacked the Dano-Norwegian fleet and bombarded the city, rebuilding during the Danish Golden Age brought a Neoclassical look to Copenhagen's architecture. Later, following the Second World War, the Finger Plan fostered the development of housing and businesses along the five urban railway routes stretching out from the city centre.
Since the turn of the 21st century, Copenhagen has seen strong urban and cultural development, facilitated by investment in its institutions and infrastructure. The city is the cultural, economic and governmental centre of Denmark; it is one of the major financial centres of Northern Europe with the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. Copenhagen's economy has seen rapid developments in the service sector, especially through initiatives in information technology, pharmaceuticals and clean technology. Since the completion of the Øresund Bridge, Copenhagen has become increasingly integrated with the Swedish province of Scania and its largest city, Malmö, forming the Øresund Region. With a number of bridges connecting the various districts, the cityscape is characterised by parks, promenades and waterfronts. Copenhagen's landmarks such as Tivoli Gardens, The Little Mermaid statue, the Amalienborg and Christiansborg palaces, Rosenborg Castle Gardens, Frederik's Church, and many museums, restaurants and nightclubs are significant tourist attractions. The largest lake of Denmark, Arresø, lies around 27 miles (43 kilometers) northwest of the City Hall Square.
Copenhagen is home to the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark and Copenhagen Business School. The University of Copenhagen, founded in 1479, is the oldest university in Denmark. Copenhagen is home to the FC København and Brøndby football clubs. The annual Copenhagen Marathon was established in 1980. Copenhagen is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world.

Copenhagen[a] (Danish: København [kʰøpm̩ˈhaʊ̯ˀn]) is the capital and most populous city of Denmark. As of July 2018, the city had a population of 1,206,098 in Copenhagen Municipality, 103,914 in Frederiksberg Municipality, 43,005 in Tårnby Municipality, and 14,201 in Dragør Municipality. It forms the core of the wider urban area of Copenhagen (population 1,520,629) and the Copenhagen metropolitan area (population 2,557,737). Copenhagen is situated on the eastern coast of the island of Zealand; another small portion of the city is located on Amager, and it is separated from Malmö, Sweden, by the strait of Øresund. Originally a Viking fishing village established in the 10th century in the vicinity of what is now Gammel Strand, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in the early 15th century. Beginning in the 17th century it consolidated its position as a regional centre of power with its institutions, defences and armed forces. During the renaissance the city served as the de facto capital being the seat of government of the Kalmar Union , governing the entire present day Nordic region in a personal union with Sweden and Norway ruled by the Danish monarch serving as the head of state. The city flourished as the cultural and economic center of Scandinavia under the union for well over 120 years, starting in the 15th century up until the beginning of the 16th century when the union was dissolved with Sweden leaving the union through a rebellion. After a plague outbreak and fire in the 18th century, the city underwent a period of redevelopment. This included construction of the prestigious district of Frederiksstaden and founding of such cultural institutions as the Royal Theatre and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The Copenhagen Metro launched in 2002 serves central Copenhagen. Additionally the Copenhagen S-train, the Lokaltog (private railway) and the Coast Line network serves and connects central Copenhagen to outlying boroughs. Copenhagen (Denmark) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Copenhagen in Denmark.
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is rich in tradition and a cultural metropolis open to the world and thus justifiably one of the most popular travel destinations in Northern Europe. Many of the city’s royal residences such as Christiansborg Slot on Slotsholmen Island attract huge numbers of visitors. A castle was built there in the 12th century by the founder of the city, Bishop Absalon. However, over the course of time the castle began to decay until it was finally pulled down in 1369 in order to make room for a new castle. Royal guards highlight the significance of Amalienborg that is situated in the heart of Frederikstaden, the winter residence of the Danish royal family. Each day at noon an impressive spectacle takes place in front of the palace when the royal guards march into the square and undertake the official changing of the guard. The wonderfully designed royal gardens of Rosenberg Castle, Kongens Have, is one of the most beautiful parks in Denmark. Built on red bricks and covered with a façade of sandstone the castle is an architectural masterpiece of Dutch Renaissance. The city’s castles not only reflect the history of the Danish royal family but also trace the colourful development of the fascinating city of Copenhagen.

Copenhagen Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Copenhagen in Denmark.
Copenhagen is the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark and is situated on the east coast of Sæland Island on the Öresund, the link between the North Sea and the Baltic. It is a European capital of culture, home country of the Little Mermaid and a successful combination of Scandinavian elegance and Middle-European joie de vivre.
In 1167, Bishop Absalon of Roskilde was granted by King Valdemar I an area of land on Öresund, to which the small settlement of Havn also belonged. For the protection of both fishermen and traders, he built a fortress and the settlement developed into Kobenhavn, the Harbor of Merchants. Copenhagen was born and the fortress was continuously enlarged until in 1376, a castle was built on its foundation.
The huge Christiansborg Palace extends across the larger part of Slotsholmen, Castle Island and it has been Denmark's power base for hundreds of years. The huge statue in the square features King Frederik VII on horseback, a monarch known in Danish history as the 'King of Democracy'.
Each day, crowds of people make for Copenhagen's world famous landmark, The Little Mermaid, created by artist Edvard Erikson. Tiny and elegant and seated on a stone, she gazes yearningly across the sea oblivious to the city's hustle and bustle.
The Rundetårn is an unusual building that was built at the command of the Renaissance king, Christian IV. Its circular tower is 36 metres high and has a diameter of 15 metres. In place of a conventional stairway, royal architects Hans Van Steenwinkel constructed a winding 209 metre long ramp, thus the somewhat rotund king was able to travel without difficulty by carriage to the astrological observatory at the top!
Copenhagen is a friendly metropolis in which tolerance and openness are the order of the day, a 'City on the Sea' that fascinates all who experience it.
