Turkey - Ferry Hijackers Surrender
TI: 11:23:00
The pro-Chechen hijackers of a Black Sea ferry carrying more than 200 people on board surrendered on Friday (19/1). The ferry, which was believed to be packed with explosives, anchored close to
the small island of Sogan on the eastern shore of the Bosphorous.
The hijackers seized the ferry on Tuesday in the eastern Turkish port of Trabzon and threatened to blow it up unless Russia halted an attack on Chechen fighters in a village in Dagestan and allow them to return to Chechnya. About 3,000 people gathered at the entrance to the Bosphorus Strait to cheer the Chechen gunmen.

(Russian)/Yuri (no surname given), local resident:
We are staying here to guard what has remained. We sleep in cars and guard what's left against thieves. There have already been attempts by looters to steal things but we managed to get them back.)
THIS MAN SAYS HE AND HIS FRIENDS REMAIN BEHIND AND SLEEP IN THEIR CARS TO GUARD AGAINST THIEVES AND LOOTERS.
EVEN RUSSIA'S MOST POPULOUS CITY ISN'T IMMUNE TO THE EFFECTS OF THE FIRES. AN ACRID SMOKE INHABITED MOSCOW MONDAY. SMOLDERING PEAT BOGS SOUTH AND EAST OF THE CAPITAL HAVE GENERATED A HAZE THAT HAS INCREASED THE CITY'S ALREADY-HIGH POLLUTION READINGS.

Taking into account weather forecasts for the coming week, we, unfortunately, have nothing good to wait for. That is why I'm expecting planned work to continue on the part of all our units and extra efforts on the part of local authorities.)
RUSSIA'S MINISTER FOR EMERGENCY SITUATIONS SAYS WITH TEMPERATURES NEAR A HUNDRED DEGREES FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK, HE EXPECTS MORE WORK FIGHTING FIRES.
BUT SOME RUSSIANS SAY THEY HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY HELP.

STORYLINE:
Serbia and Bosnia both said they were once more receiving Russian natural gas on Wednesday, after a two-week cutoff in supplies, amid a bitter dispute between Russia's Gazprom and Ukraine over unpaid bills and gas prices.
The Serbian state gas company Srbijagas said that it expected a full normalisation of gas deliveries to homes and factories by the end of Wednesday.
Serbia has been among the hardest hit by the January 7 cutoff of Russian gas shipments via Ukrainian pipelines, caused by a price dispute between the two countries.
The cutoff left Serbia scrambling for alternative energy sources as factories shut down and (m) millions of people shivered in unheated homes amid freezing temperatures.
Serbia had agreed emergency gas deliveries from Hungary and Germany.
The Serbian government said the gas cutoff cost the country's economy 50 million euros (65 million US dollars) a day, and government officials said they were considering legal action against both Russia and Ukraine to seek compensation.
Meanwhile, the Bosnian state gas company, BH-Gas, said on Wednesday it had cancelled a contract for emergency gas supplies with Germany's E.ON AG.
Bosnia imports all its gas from Russia and has no reserves.
For two days, some 72,000 Sarajevo households were left without heating on minus 14 Celsius (6.8 Fahrenheit) when the Russian-Ukrainian dispute shut off supplies to Europe.
Meanwhile, the Mittal Steel factory in Zenica, north of Sarajevo, suffered severe financial losses due to the gas cutoff.
