Greek Alps ~ Smokovo Lake | Rentina | Domokos Central Greece ~ Σμόκοβο, Ρεντίνα, Δομοκός
Authentic destinations in Greece. Karditsa is surrounded by beautiful small villages, all of them representative of traditional local architecture. Visit Rentina, the “Queen of Agrafa”, certainly a religious experience to behold with a plethora of byzantine churches, a 15th century monastery and a Byzantine Art Museum. Pamper yourself in the modern hydrotherapy center of Smokovo, with the therapeutic natural springs soothing tired limbs since ancient times. Be one of the few who discover the original beauty of Oxya village, or pay a visit to mountainous Mouzaki, an important commercial and administrative center of the region, with the river Pamisos passing through it. Another highlight of the area is the well-preserved medieval castle of Fanari (Kastro), affording stunning views across the plain of Thessaly.
The curative springs of Smokovo are 35 km southwest of Karditsa, in the mountain mass of Agrafa and at an altitude of 450 metres. The first mention of the use of the hot springs is made in 1662. At that time, two lords from Smokovo, Moshos and Fragkos Stravoenoglou, built temporary facilities for their baths. The inhabitants mimiced them and this resulted in the spread of the fame of the extraordinary properties of the springs. Among the most famous visitors of that time were Ali Pasha of Ioannina and Mahmout Pasha. To honour them, two springs were named after them. The waters gush from five springs and are channeled in the hydrotherapy centre.
Curative Water
The temperature of the water of the spring is 42oC
Characterisation: Superheated HCO3- Na- HS- F hypotonic, slightly radioactive (spring of Alexander)

Health thermalism facilities
There are 43 individual Jacuzzi tubs, 22 individual inhaling devices and 7 individual nasal cleansing devices in the hydrotherapy centre facilities. In the new wing of the centre, visitors will find a curative tank (pool), rooms for sauna and Turkish Baths, rooms for massage as well as a fully equipped gym. The temperature of the water in the hydrotherapy centre is 35oC. The facilities are open from June to October, seven days a week, while during winter they are open only on Saturday and Sunday. The pool is open from 09:00 am to 18:00 pm. In the area there are also facilities for accommodation and eating.
Arriving at Loutropigi in no case should not be overlooked by the idea that mountain wanderings have come to an end. The opposite, indeed. The wild nature of Agrafa has just begun to show its true moods.
The most beautiful route in general is that linking Loutropigi with Rentina. The road is crowded in the rich relief created by the surrounding mountains and as it moves at a height of 1,000-1,200 meters through a dense forest of oak forests, reveals an aerial dimension view of the fossils of Fthiotida and Evritania. The best places to stop are the chapel of Ag. Fanouriou (soon after the crossing for Aidonochori) nestling in the forest next to a spring and the temple of Ag. Trinity from where you will enjoy the magnificent view - and the two small temples will see them on the road, at an altitude of 900 meters. The final destination is Rentina, the old head village of Roumeli, also known as the Queen of Agrafa.
The forests of Rentina are a wildlife sanctuary, as the few wolves left in Central Greece are still looking for habitat.

The Baths of Ali Pasha
The natural spas of Smokovo are 35 km south-west of Karditsa, in the southern Agrafa mountain range and at an altitude of 400 m. Although the healing properties of springs spilling near the area have been known since antiquity, the emergence and systematic exploitation they began in 1662 by two wealthy Smokovite merchants who maintained important commercial activities in the Danubian areas.
Over the years, Baths have been known all over Greece for the beneficial and healing properties of their sulphurous and alkaline waters. Among the most famous visitors of the time were Ali Pasha of Ioannina and Mahmoud Pasha. In fact, two of the thermal springs bear their name. In 1882, the Greek state was responsible for their management. The opening of the Karditsa-Smokovo road takes place in the early 20th century when the first hotels begin to appear, while in 1923 the pioneering hydromassage was built.
