Navagio Beach - Shipwreck - Smugglers' Cove in Zakynthos Zante Island Greece
On the north west coast of the Greek Ionian Island of Zakynthos you will find Shipwreck Cove or Smugglers Cove, also called Navagio Beach, which is probably the most famous beach in Greece and can only be accessed by boat, but is well worth the trip.
This picturesque beach has been photographed and featured in many holiday brochures, travel books and televised advertisements. The boat was shipwrecked back in 1980 after hitting rocks in bad weather while being pursued by the Greek Navy who suspected it was carrying contraband cigarettes.
Frequent boat service to Shipwreck Cove is provided from many spots on Zakynthos Island, including nearby Porto Vromi located to the south, or from the Harbor of Saint Nikolas in Volimes, located to the north of Shipwreck Cove. You can also take a boat from island's capital city of Zakynthos (Zante Town). However when we visited Shipwreck we went on the boat trip run by the Potamitis Brothers which you can catch near the Lighthouse at Skinari.

Smuggler's Cove, Zakynthos
This is the viewing point for Navagio - the shipwreck at what is known as Smuggler's Cove, near Anafonitria on the north west of the Greek island of Zakynthos. I was there on Monday June 15th 2009.
One of the most famous beaches in Greece, it took its name from the story of how the shipwreck got there. The story goes that in 1982, a ship called Panagiotis was smuggling a large quantity of cigarettes and a customs patrol boat gave chase, eventually cornering it in the north west corner of the island. The captain, realising all was lost, decided that he would scuttle the ship rather than give up his cargo. The ship was carried onto the rocks and drifted ashore to where it now sits almost dead centre on the beautiful beach.
Of course there is the other theory that the ship was simply placed there by the Greek Tourist Board to create an extra attraction on the island of Zante - but I prefer the original story!

The best beach Zante Smugglers Cove Navagio
Zante - Smugglers Cove also known as Navagio has to be the most famous beach on the island if not in Greece. On the North West of the island over 20 years ago a coaster carrying contraband cigarettes was wrecked and washed on the beach that formed smugglers cove. The sandy and pebbly beach is only accessible by boat.

Navagio Beach (Greek: Ναυάγιο, pronounced [naˈvaʝio]), or Shipwreck Beach, is an exposed cove, sometimes referred to as Smugglers Cove, on the coast of Zakynthos, in the Ionian Islands of Greece.
Navagio Beach was originally known as Agios Georgios. On 2 October 1980, a Freightliner, the MV Panagiotis, ran aground in the waters around Zakynthos Island on Navagio Beach during stormy weather and bad visibility. It has been rumoured the ship was smuggling contraband such as cigarettes, wine and women. The ship was abandoned and still rests buried in the limestone gravel of the beach that now bears the nickname Shipwreck.

Tourism in Greece has been a key element of the economic activity in the country, and is one of the country's most important sectors. Greece has been a major tourist destination and attraction in Europe since antiquity, for its rich culture and history, which is reflected in large part by its 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among the most in Europe and the world[1] as well as for its long coastline, many islands, and beaches.[2]
The Egremnoi sand beach in the Greek island of Lefkada, noted for its blue crystal waters,[3] is a popular tourist destination.
Greece attracted 26.5 million visitors in 2015, 30.1 million visitors in 2017 and 32.5 million visitors are expected in 2018,[4] [5] [6][7] making Greece one of the most visited countries in Europe and the world, and contributing 18% to the nation's Gross Domestic Product.[8] Its capital city Athens, as well as Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu, Crete and Chalkidice are some of the country's major tourist destinations.
In recent years, Greece has also promoted religious tourism and pilgrimages to regions with a significant historical religious presence, such as the monasteries in Meteora and Mount Athos, in cooperation with other countries.
The government intends to promote winter tourism in Greece, which could potentially increase international arrivals even further.
Tourism in Greece is run by the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) who used Helena Paparizou, a famous Greek singer who won Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 as an ambassador. Singer Sakis Rouvas,[33] who represented Greece in the 2009 Eurovision song contest, is currently the ambassador for Greek Tourism.
The advertisements displayed in the GNTO's website still focus on the triptych of sea, sun and sand. However, the tourism campaign is undergoing a significant change as city-breaks and conference tourism are promoted, along with cultural and wellness tourism. The impact of the new campaign will hopefully result in increased tourist revenues. The name of commercials is You in Greece.
