St Clements Caves Hastings - Smugglers Adventure HD
This is my visit to St Clements Caves Hastings Sussex. These caves are open to the pubic as an attraction called Smugglers Adventure, they include many scenes, tableau's, displays, games and information relating to the use of these caves by smugglers in the 18th century.
This is a great educational outing for the kids, especially boys, but younger ones might find the dark a bit scary in places allow 1-2 hours for a full tour.
The lack of light also makes videoing difficult I will have to pay another visit when I get an iso 25000 camera!

Otherwise Chronicles UK: Smuggler's Adventure
It seems I've been to a lot of places around the southeast coast of the UK, but haven't done all that much in the town I've actually been staying. So here's the Hastings edition: Smuggler's Adventure, in which I explore St. Clement's Caves and learn a lot about the 1700's way to avoid crazy high import taxes. So much fun - you should definitely go if you're in the area! Apologies for the poor quality, I definitely am not equipped to be filming in the dark.

England: Smugglers, Spies and Soldiers
Before the Norman conquest of 1066, Sandwich was one of five towns that provided the King with ships and men in exchange for special trading privileges. Although Sandwich became the chief harbor for the export of wool it didn't stop the town from participating in smuggling. Many caves along the south coast led to the cellars of taverns and homes of local politicians. In Deal the whole community was involved in tax evasion. Smugglers engaged in two-way espionage delivering their knowledge to both the French and British. When Napoleon declared his intention to invade England, the Royal Military Canal was dug, Martello Towers erected along the coast, and tunnels were dug into the cliffs at Dover. These tunnels, and the little coastal port of Newhaven, were to play a major role during WW2. Hastings Castle & 1066 Story! William the Conqueror, Normandy and England!
The ruins we can see today are the remains of a stone fortress (built after William of Normandy's coronation) which was practically impregnable from three sides. Less than half of the original structure remains.
During September 1066, William the Conqueror landed at Pevensey and ordered the construction of a prefabricated wooden castle. He then moved on to Hastings and erected another.
Hastings Castle was originally a wooden tower built on top of a man made mound or motte, which was surrounded by an outer courtyard or bailey. The bailey was enclosed by a wooden palisade. The Norman motte and bailey castle would become a common fixture across England following the conquest.
After the victory at the Battle of Hastings, William was crowned on Christmas Day 1066, and had issued orders that Hastings Castle was to be rebuilt in stone.
William left the castle in the charge of one of his top commanders Humphrey de Tilleul. Around 1069, he gave the castle and the town of Hastings to Robert, Count of Eu, who founded the Collegiate Church of St Mary in the Castle within the castle walls. The remains of this church are the best-preserved part of the ruins.
In 1094 William the Conqueror's son King William Rufus stayed at the castle and during the reign of Henry II much building work was carried out. However, in 1216 King John feared invasion from France and ordered the castle to be dismantled, rather than fall into French hands.
It was restored and rearmed by Henry III in 1225 and later dismantled in the reign of Edward II. In 1272 the Collegiate Church became the King's Free Chapel of Hastings and its Chapel of the Holy Cross became a place of pilgrimage.
The savage storms of the 13th century brought chaos to Hastings. The harbour was destroyed and large parts of the castle fell into the sea. The destruction of the harbour meant the port of Hastings had no further military importance, the town declined into a fishing village and the castle fell into decay.
Henry VIII finally dissolved St Mary in the Castle at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. In 1591 the ruins became the property of the Pelham family and for centuries the site was used for farming.
In 1824 the 6th Earl of Chichester, Thomas Pelham carried out a full excavation of the castle and during Victorian times it became a tourist attraction. During World War II, an anti-aircraft gun was placed alongside the castle and the steep cliffs were used as a training area for commandos. In 1951 the Pelham family sold the castle to the Hastings Corporation for £3,000.
In 1966 a plaque was unveiled commemorating the Battle of Hastings and on October 14 each year a replica of William's flag, the Gonfalon, is flown from the castle. A popular attraction at the castle today is The 1066 Story - a 16 minute sound and light presentation on the history of the castle and the battle.
Hastings Castle & 1066 Story Tour
Hastings Castle is a fascinating part of history and includes 'The 1066 Story' - an exciting 20 minute audio-visual programme covering the Conquest and the history of the castle through the centuries.

Smugglers and Ghosts at Rye Museum
Jo Kirkham talks to Richard Vobes, the Bald Explorer about the smuggling and ghostly activities of the 17th and 18th Centuries in the Rye area and on the Romney Marshes in Kent.
Rye Castle Museum is a small independent accredited museum that receives no government or council financial support. It relies for its income on visitor receipts, subscriptions, fundraising by members of the Rye Museum Association members and any successful grant applications.
Rye Castle Museum exists to provide access to an Scheduled Monument (the Ypres Tower or Rye Castle) and a collection of artefacts --presently housed primarily at a second site on East Street--that reflect the history of the Ancient Town of Rye; to ensure their continuous conservation and development; and to promote them to residents and visitors of all ages so that they can appreciate and understand the unique character of Rye and its surrounding landscape.
#54 Hauntings in Hastings
Yes, I know I dislike the word ‘Haunted’ but it had an ‘H’ in it to make a good title along with ‘Hastings’! So in this Vlog, we are behind the scenes with my SPIRAL PARANORMAL Team; Al, Mandy and Kerry as we travel down to Hastings for a private paranormal investigation with Tim and Audrey of The P.I.G.S. Team (Paranormal Intelligence Gathering Service). St Mary in the Castle is a grade II* listed former Church built in the Neo-Classical style. It was converted into an Arts Centre in 1998 after substantial refurbishment by Hastings Borough Council and English Heritage. The building sits as the centre piece of the delightful Pelham Crescent above the regency Pelham Arcade on Hastings Seafront / The full Episode will be online soon.

Hastings Old Town - Britain’s Best Walking Neighbourhood nominees
Hastings has been nominated for the Ramblers Britain’s Best Walking Neighbourhood Award. Check out the shortlist of ten neighbourhoods and vote at ramblers.org.uk/votehastings
Hastings Old Town is full of beautiful listed buildings and quaint streets crisscrossed by narrow “twittens”, passages developed in Victorian times that today form charming pedestrian routes between the main streets. In keeping with the historic feel, public areas are sympathetically lit using carefully designed light sources. George Street, the main pedestrian link to Hastings Town Centre, is a pedestrian zone for most of the day.
