Snæfellsjökull IJsland / Iceland 09-08-2011 Snaefellsjökull
Snæfellsjökull (Icelandic for snow-fells glacier or snow-mountains glacier) is a 700,000 year old stratovolcano with a glacier covering its summit in western Iceland. The name of the mountain is actually Snæfell, but it is normally called Snæfellsjökull to distinguish it from two other mountains with this name. It is situated on the most western part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland. Sometimes it may be seen from the city of Reykjavík over the bay of Faxaflói, at a distance of 120 km.
The mountain is one of the most famous sites of Iceland, primarily due to the novel A Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) by Jules Verne, in which the protagonists find the entrance to a passage leading to the center of the earth on Snæfellsjökull.
The mountain is included in the Snæfellsjökull National Park (Icelandic: Þjóðgarðurinn Snæfellsjökull).[

Iceland Vlog: Day 12 (Snaefellsjokull National Park and Arnastapi)
Wecome to day 12 of our amazing driving and camping trip in Iceland!
Day 12:
- We woke up early and had a quick look around Olafsvik, the town where we had camped the night before. It is a nice town next to the coast, but there wasn´t much to see a part from a beautiful modern church.

- We headed to our first destination, Saxholl Crater. It is smaller than the other two craters we had already visited on our trip but it had amazing views of the sea, as well as a spectacular lava field that surrounded it, and a great view of Snaefellsjokull volcano (the one out of Jules Verne´s masterpiece, Journey To The Center Of The Earth). The best thing about this crater is that it has a carpark right next to it, it is free and there are some metal stairs that take you all the way to the top.
- We then went to Djupalonssandur Beach, it is a stoney beach with remnants of an old shipwreck, as well as beautiful lava field rock formation in the sea. You can get a great photo of Snaefellsjokull Volcano from here. There is a carpark and free toilets.
- After that we left the Snaefellsjokull National Park and went to Arnastapi, a touristy village on the coast. There some amazing coastal landscapes here, including a natural archway which you could walk over.
- We did the well known lava field walk along the coast to find the famous Fjuruhusid café, it took us about 40mins to get there, and the café is really nice, selling food and drink, but they are most famous for their waffles! There is also a beautiful view of the sea and some strange rock formations nearby.
- We went back to Arnastapi and had pizza for lunch, the restaurant was really nice, and the pizzas had original names, ours was called Journey to the Center of the Earth, lol.
- After lunch we looked at the amazing coastal formations, but sadly we had to go back to the car when I storm hit, so we went to our next campsite (Eldborg) and had a relaxing evening there.

Sheep block the road during the scenic drive towards Snæfellsjökull National Park in Iceland's Western Region.
The Snæfellsjökull glacier is 1446m above sea level. The glacier is an active volcano, having been built up through numerous eruptions during the last 800,000 years. Many believe the glacier to be one of the seven main energy centres of the earth and its mystique is noticed by many. The glacier plays big role as the Center of the Earth in the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) by Jules Verne. Snæfellsjökull is a part of the Snæfellsjökull National Park which was established on June 28, 2001. The Park's purpose is to protect and conserve the areas unique landscape, indigenous plant and animal life as well as important historical relics. At the same time, the Park is meant to allow visitors easier as well as improved opportunities to get to know the area.
