Snake Temple Penang
One of the most unique temples in the world is the Penang Snake Temple filled with venomous pit vipers and pythons. Built in 1850 in memory of the Buddhist Monk Chor Soo Kong who was said to have previously cared for snakes, after completion the pit vipers arrived on their own and have made the temple their home.
Burning incense in the temple is meant to calm the snakes however for visitors protection they have also had their venom removed but their teeth still remain. Attached the temple there is also an area where you can take photos with vipers and a HUGE python.
Located next door is the Snake Temple Snake farm which houses 50 various types of snakes that you can see in their cages like a granite python, an albino burmese python, king cobras, a 100+kg python and more.

The Snake Temple is a Chinese temple situated in Bayan Lepas, Southwest Penang Island District, Penang, Malaysia. It was built in the 1805 for Chor Soo Kong, a Buddhist monk. Devotees from as far away as Singapore, Taiwan and China come to pray in the temple on the monk birthday.

Snake Temple, Penang, Malaysia
This Taoist Chinese temple on the southern end of the island in Penang, Malaysia, may be the only one of its kind in the world. It was built in 1850 to venerate Buddhist monk named Chor Soo Kong. Soon after completion pit viper snakes from the surrounding untouched jungle began making their way into the temple. Rather than clean them out, monks welcomed the snakes and became their protectors. Today much of the land around the temple has been developed into factories, thus the number of snakes is much reduced, but dozens still arrive each day and drape themselves in potted plants and wooden tree stands that are set upon the altars. Though poisonous, it is believed that incense from burning joss sticks has rendered the snakes harmless. Even so, signs abound, warning visitors not to handle the poisonous serpents, as they lie out in the open with no cages or other barriers to separate them from worshipers. Kilka kilometrów poza centrum GeorgeTown, gdzie można dojechać autobusem, znajduje się Snake Temple, czyli świątynia węży. Na pierwszy rzut oka nie jest je tak łatwo dostrzec, ponieważ są zakamuflowane, ale potem okazuje się że jest ich mnóstwo.
Za świątynią znajduje się mały ogród, oraz drzewa na których również są węże, jeżeli ma się szczęście można trafić na porę karmienia, wtedy pan przychodzi z małymi myszkami i podaje je wygłodniałym wężom na patyku :)

We continue our trip in Malaysia. We switch hotels after staying a couple nights in a hotel that was not the most secure or clean. After moving hotels to a much nicer and larger space, we visit the Temple of Snakes in Penang, Malaysia! A temple which is home to pit vipers, an extremely venomous snake! On of the many things to do in Malaysia. We also get some fantastic Bak Kut Teh, and do some shopping in Penang!
Finally we head out to visit another Shaolin school in Penang, run by Master Ong Ming Tong and have a great evening learning, as they share some of the things that they practice!

The Snake Temple (Chinese: 蛇庙; pinyin: Shé Miào; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tsuâ-biō) is situated in Sungai Kluang, Bayan Lepas, Penang, Malaysia and is perhaps the only temple of its kind in the world. The temple is filled with the smoke of burning incense and a variety of pit vipers. The vipers are believed to be rendered harmless by the sacred smoke, but as a safety precaution, the snakes have also been de-venomed but still have their fangs intact, visitors are warned against picking up the reptiles and placing them on their bodies for taking pictures. Local devotees believe that the temple's snake population has come there of its own accord.
The temple was built circa 1850 in memory of Chor Soo Kong (祖師公), by a Buddhist monk. Chor Soo Kong (also known as Qingshui) was born with the Tan surname (陳昭應, or Tan Chhiau-eng) in China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). He was very serious about spiritual attainment and was ordained at a young age. Legend has it that Chor Soo Kong, who was also a healer, gave shelter to the snakes of jungle. When he died at the age of 65 after a lifetime of good deeds, he was bestowed the honorific title Chor Soo, meaning an eminent historic figure continuously revered by a community generation after generation. After the completion of the temple, snakes appeared on their own accord. The Snake Temple was originally named the Temple of the Azure Cloud in honor of the beauty of Penang's sky.
Believers from as far away as Singapore and Taiwan come to pray in the temple on Chor Soo Kong's birthday (the sixth day of the first lunar month).
The temple was featured during the 8th leg of The Amazing Race 16.
The temple is a location in Tan Twan Eng's novel The Gift of Rain (book 1, chapter 4).
